Hello, Would your Smith line have any connection to Hunt County, or any other county in the east Texas area? My paternal grandfather was Joseph Norfleet Hammond (son of George Washington Hammond and Martha Birdsong) and his wifeMartha Jane (Mattie) was a Pilkington; her mother was a Smith Mattie was born near Greenville in Hunt Co. Joseph was from Wood Co. . The Hammond family and related lines are of Native American descent (Lumbee-Cherokee) of the North Carolina (specifically, Robeson Co.) and South Carolina (Edgefield?) and Sumter Co, Georgia. From GA they moved into Texas in approximately the 1860's. Other surnames in the line are: Norfleet, Jackson, Birdsong, Israel, Lowery, McSwain, Berry, Oxendine, Locklear, Davis, Webb, Wilkerson, Reagan, Bullard, Williams, Spradley. Any hint of a connection would be helpful. Mitzi Hammond Perkins SUNMANOR@aol.com wrote: > No, my G. W. No, my G. W. Smith is listed in Collin County living with his wife Elizabeth who was assumed to be full Cherokee Indian from North Carolina. This is the 1860 census for Collin Co., Texas. His daughter remarried when her husband Richard Cantrell was killed, evidently on the way to Texas (or Arkansas). Sunny Williams
The G. W. Smith that Sunny is talking about was a veteran of the War of 1812, so cannot be your G. W.Smith. Joy Bill & Lee Driggers wrote: > > Sunny, is this G. W. Sunny, is this G. W. Smith, the one that is listed on the 1860 Texas census, living in Fannin Co?? If so, his daughter, Nancy Jane, married Thomas F. Driggers. This G. W. born 1816 in GA. Lee
Of course you know that I am working off of "family lore" and I had always heard that my G. W. Smith fought at the battle of San Jacinto, thereby allowing "us" (kinfolks) to be DRT or SRT, since he was involved in the freedom fight. But then......Yes, I know that Mt. Ida throws a wrench in the machinery, but I am thinking that perhaps William McKinney was related to one of the brothers of Collin McKinney. I have seen the book you are talking about - in fact have gone through the one about Mordecai (?) McKinney backwards and forwards looking for a connection. So far, haven't hit it yet. Now, when I did go to Mt. Ida, we did FINALLY locate McKinney Cemetery which was way back off in the woods quite a long ways - almost in dense underbrush as well - I was thinking "Deliverance" as we drove and drove and drove, and finally, we came to a small clearing - and oddly enough, as the sun was coming down through the trees, it was filtering through and aimed directly onto the gravestones of MY McKinney relatives (with the exception of William and Alie); talk about a moment sent from Heaven, my husband and I just about jumped out of our car. It was just too weird! But so fulfilling after all the years. Of course this was sandwiched all around me falling and breaking my wrist, getting a son-in-law, daughter-in-law and a grandbaby in the past five years, not to say my parents coming to live with us, and having two major surgeries within six months of each other. But I still keep plugging away at those McKinneys. Some how or another I am going to make it stick!!!!! Should you come across anything please give me a "holler". I have the records from the store in Mt. Ida where they bought groceries. I tried to talk to a lady whose family was related to the man they thought shot my g-g-g-grandfather but she was not interested in corresponding. I am sorry that I couldn't convince her that I only wanted to hear the story, not pass judgement!!!! We ALL have skeletons in our closets!!!! Anyway, have a great day tomorrow and I am hoping for NO RAIN up your way!!!!! Sunny
Hi List! Is everyone doing their family history? It's too hot for anything else... I thought I would send you this interesting website "Random Acts of Kindness": http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnraogk/index.htm And thanks to Patricia and Kim for helping others in Collin County! Denise Your List Mom
THE Collin McKinney was originally from New Jersey. Hope this you. Mitzi Hammond Perkins Surnames: Hammond, Pilkinton, Browning, Erwin, Humphries, Birdsong, Holder, Pardue, Jones, Smith. Gentry, Lair. Desperately seeking information about JOHN WESLEY ERWIN who married Emma Lair Humphries in Collin Co. (probably in Melissa) April 4, 1881. Also need information about Emma's mother SUSAN D. (GENTRY) HUMPHRIES who married William (Billy) Henry Humphries in Person Co. North Carolina in 1842. William's mother was Jane G. Jones. The Alexanders came to Collin County in the 1840s and could easily be related to the McKinneys since they did not live too far away. Do not know of a Gibbins, but there could be one. I know of other people related to George Washington Smith of Blue Ridge. One man is trying to prove that Smith was actually at the battle of San Jacinto. There was a G. W. Smith at the battle, but there was apparently two G. W.Smiths. No proof that it was the one from Collin. When the historical marker was obtained for Smith in Collin Co., the state refused the statement that he fought at San Jacinto. There is another book entitled The Family McKinney. Have you seen it? Collin came to Texas from Ky or TN. He settled in the area around Texarkana around 1832 before moving west to Red River Co. and eventually to Collin. Mt. Ida is pretty far and the date is off. Could be a relative. If you've seen the book the Descendents of Collin and Daniel McKinney, you are aware of the long list of Williams and Willies. There is also a handful of Alexanders and Smiths. I've looked at that book - and until I unravel the "mystery" surrounding my McKinney person (William McKinney) who was shot by a man named Wells in Mt. Ida, Arkansas in 1840, and find out exactly WHO William McKinney was kin to (I strongly believe his brother's name was Reuben McKinney), I can't trace backwards any farther. Of course things further complicate themselves, as the Widow McKinney (Alie, Alia, Mahalia) marries a James Gibbins, and drops out of sight after 1845 or so. I thank you so much for offering...I know how dear time can be, but right now until I make the connection (only been looking for it for about 20 years now), I can't get there from here. Which is maddening for a fact. I have visited Mt. Ida, and I have proof that they were there. I have the written remnances (?) of Gladys Alexander who was a great-granddaughter of William & Alia who swore about the murder of William. But so far, no fact, nada.....other than some info from the Montgomery County Historical Society.....sigh....I'll keep on keeping on....... Thanks again tho for your kind and VERY generous offer!!!!! Sunny
I currently have in my possession, for a few days only, a book entitled the Descendents of Collin and Daniel McKinney. If you will give me some names, I will look in the book to see if they are listed. T.W. Smith in Collin Co. in 1871. Would this be your Smith family? I certainly agree with you on the Courthouse. Claude Freeman
Even tho I will not be able to be there at the dedication, I strongly support anything that has to do with the old courthouse or anything of historical significance - my family name is McKinney, and we have been searching for years to see if any of the family actually was related to "The" Collin McKinney, as it has been handed down for years that we are. I do have ties there as well, my great/great grandfather was Samuel McKinney who lived in Blue Ridge, with his wife Virginia. Also, one of my great/great/great (however many back) grandfathers was George Washington Smith who fought with the Frontier Rangers and also fought in the Battle of San Jacinto, and also with Fannin at Goliad. I have strong ties to McKinney, even though I have never lived there. I just wanted you to know that I'm with you in spirit, if not in body. Thanks for letting everyone know about this. Sunny Williams Researching: McKinney, Griffith, Smith, Pruitt, Cantrell, Rawls, Reagan, Brown, Enser, McCabe, Conditt, Williams, Pierce, Pruitt (husband's side), etc., etc., etc.
Hope to see a lot of people at the dedication, corner of Louisiana and Kentucky, for those who do not know McKinney. Minnie Pitts Champ wrote: >

The historical marker for the 1927 Collin County Courthouse will be dedicated on July 21 at 10:30 at the southwest corner of the square in McKinney. The public is invited. We need to show the county and the city of McKinney that we care about the old building. Joy
