The Wombles settled in the area of Collin County known as Verona - southwest of Blue Ridge. The community was named Womble for a while. The school was also named Womble. The name was changed to Verona when they appliced for a post office. Verona was supposedly a daughter of A. Womble. The area was also known as Mississippi because so many of the residents were from that state. If the murder happened in 1918, it should have been in the newspaper. The McKinney library has newspapers on microfilm for that year. The Old Post Office Museum also has old newspapers. Maybe someone who volunteers at the museum would know that story. Mrs. Helen Hall has written many articles about early McKinney, and she is a volunteer at the Old Post Office Museum. Bill Haines and Elizabeth Pink are also volunteers who know a lot about McKinney's history. The North Collin County Genealogical Society has a page on the Net. Maybe someone there could help you. Hi All I have a family story and was wondering if any one can help me verify it. (lol) My grandfather was born and raised in McKinney. The son of Samuel Andrew Anglin and Purlina Shipman. He had an older brother named Jeff or Jefferson. When my grandfather was 12 (1918) Jeff was shot and killed by a jealous husband. Apparently there was no arrest or trial because my grandfather sat by the roadside every day for quite a while with a shotgun waiting for the man to go by so he could shoot him. He was very upset with his father for not taking revenge ie an eye for an eye. Jeff was supposedly shot while escaping the bedroom of a married woman. Story goes that he was jumping into the back of a buckboard and was shot in the back. Any body have any ideas on how I can check this story out or find out where it happened or anything else? Thanks for listening. Jo
There is a website called GenConnect Boards which allow people to enter queries and data about a specific county: Query, Bible, Bios, Deed, Obits, Pensions, & Wills. You can visit at: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/indx/Tx.html When people submit information to these boards, there is a feature so that you can be automatically be notified by email that someone has added something. What I did is this..I have subscribed the list (TXCOLL-N-L@rootsweb.com) to those boards. So, whenever something is added to those boards, it will get sent to this list. Your ListMom! Denise

Hi, I am a descendant of Richard Tinsley "Tin" PETERMAN and "Bettie" Dale Peterman. "Tin" was also known as Uncle Pete. They moved to Celina (Collin Co.) TX about 1900 from Celina (Clay Co.) TN with their 10 sons. Bettie died in 1935 and "Tin" died in 1948 at the age of 93 years. I am looking for information on the following surnames: STONE, BURRUS, PETERMAN, HALSELL, FANCHER and KIRKPATRICK. I am particularly looking for information on Sarah Ann BURRUS, b. 1861 d. June 1901. She was buried in the Old Celina Cemetery next to her husband, Martin S. Burrus who died in 1935. I believe that her surname was PETERMAN and that she was the sister of Richard Tinsley PETERMAN. Sarah Ann Peterman married Martin S. BURRUS 14 Sep 1876 in Clay County, TN. I believe that Sarah and Martin moved to Collin Co. TX sometime between 1876 and 1880 with others of the BURRUS family who are also buried in the Old Celina Cemetery. I would love to hear from any descendants of Martin and Sarah BURRUS or any information at all regarding this couple. Betty (Peterman) Owens

Tom, There is a Robert Ernest Mantooth (1887-1973) buried in the Brazos Point Cemetary, Brazos Point Community, Bosque Co., Tx. Can give exact location if you know of this Robert. I have a book, "In Remembrance of Our Ancestors" by Ella Lee Hudson Osborne about the people and how they lived in Brazos Point, Lone Oak and Eulogy Communities. Ella lived with a lady named Mantooth near the Brazos River until she had to go into a nursing home in Cleburne. She has a couple of pages in the book about the Aaron Mantooth Family and the Robert Ernest Mantooth Family. If you know any of these people, let me know and I will see what it says. Allen

Here in TN our state library and archives has print materials only from Southern states; so, I was really impressed that a small general library would have such variety. Sara Binkley Tarpley
The Gladys Harrington Library in Plano, Collin County, Texas, has the birth and death index on microfilm in their library. Lookups are conducted on a regular basis by Genealogy Friends for a very small donation. The money goes to purchase more microfilm for the genealogical collection. Anyone interested in this service offered by Genealogy Friends of Plano Libraries, Inc., please contact them at their email address at GenFriends@aol.com. You may also visit their exceptional web page at www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/4167. The URL contains many historical and genealogical items of interest to genealogical researchers. > About a year ago, I found the names of two ladies in Euless, TX who offered copies of a statewide death index for all people with a single surname in years 1903-1940. The prices are very reasonable $5, or for more common surnames $7 (up to 15 pages). For very common surnames the cost goes up a little. I believe after 1940 indices are also available, but the cost is considerably more.
