I made a big mistake on my last post. The mother of Abbie Turner was Mary Elizabeth Mankin. Not Louanna Sligh as I posted. Louanna was Mary Mankin's mother. Donald
Is there any one in Collin Co. TX that might know any thing about a family named Mullins? My Grandfather's only full sister, Abbie Turner, married a man named Mullins and I know nothing about her or him. Here is what little I know. Her Father as Robert B Turner and her mother was Louanna Elizabeth Sligh. She was born 09 May 1883 in Collin Co. I do think that they married in Collin Co. but I can not be sure. Her father left Collin Co. around 1900 and died in 1916 in Waco Texas. Donald

I have some information on Elizabeth Lewis. Before 1900, Betsy and most of her children moved to Texas. Hamilton and family moved to Collin County, Texas. Mary Jane remained in Tennessee. In the 1900 census for Navarro County, Texas, dated 3 July 1900, Elizabeth was listed with her son George and his family. Her birthdate was given as Feb 1829. She was listed as age 71, and she had eight children, all living. They lived next to Charlie and William and Susannah. In the 1910 census for Navarro County, Elizabeth was living with her son, George, and his family. She was listed as age 82. Betsy applied for pension in Collin County. James Preston Griffin and Felix Grundy Lewis signed the application. Betsy lived in Navarro County and Collin County. She may have moved back to Cocke County, Tennessee, as a will was found there, dated 17 March 1913. She left everything to George W. Allen of Dallas, Texas. I have more information if you would like it. Patti Kruger, desc of Sarah Marilda Lewis, daughter of Martin Lewis

I was very interested in the post about the Lewis Family in Collin Co., TX. My Rachel Ellen Fowler b. 1843 in MO was in Stewart Creek, Denton Co. TX with her parents, John C. Fowler & Olivia Heath Fowler on the 1860 Census. She married Cornelius Lewis March 14, 1861 in Collin Co., TX. I located him in the 1860 Precinct 1, Dallas Co., TX Census pg 308b 1257/1261 a boarder in the home of R. R. Fletcher who was 30, a merchant from MA. Fletcher had a wife Susan 30 f. MO, 3 small children, Ella, 6, Preston 4, & Marie Fletcher 21 f. MA (I assume she was the sister of R. R. Fletcher). There was another Boarder, L. H. Barlow 35 m. Laborer from IL and last is Cornelius Lewis 25 Laborer Ireland. That means he was born @1835. I never located him again. He must have died because in the Feb. term 1863 in Collin Co., TX Rachel Ellen Lewis was in the Probate Court as his widow, they had 10 acres in Collin Co., TX, a pony, a yoke of Oxen. Family lore has it that Nelson Crowder Cogdell brought the personal effects of Cornelius Lewis to the widow, Rachel Ellen Lewis, as he had promised Cornelius. Then Nelson is said to have fallen for the widow and married her. They moved to AR. I have never found anything on Cornelius Lewis. I have no idea where he was in 1850? I do not know if he was really from Ireland, if so when did he come over here? He must have been related to somebody? Could he have been related to the Elizabeth Lewis family? I just cannot locate him before 1860. Thanks, Charlene Message Board Post: I have discovered who Elizabeth Lewis b 10 Feb 1829 Cocke Co, dtr of John Leith Lewis and Leannah Brown, married through a death certificate of Elizabeth's daughter. Elizabeth married George W Allen born abt 1828 Tn whom I believe to be the son of a John Allen born abt 1799 Tenn who lived on English Creek. George W. Allen was killed during the civil war and died Nov 1863. George and Elizabeth are living by her mother Leannah Brown Lewis Baxter and her brother Maldon Lewis in the 1850 census. George and Elizabeth had children 1) Eliza Jane b Dec 1847 died 1924 Cocke Co married John Holloway son of Joseph Holloway and Sarah Clevenger. This is the death certificate I found that documents her parents 2) Hamilton Blackburn Allen b Feb 1848 d 18 Jun 1911 Collin Co Tx married Lavinia M Mosely 3) Sarah Allen b Feb 1851 married 1st Mr. Brown and 2nd David McNabb b Jun 1850. Sarah died 1934 Cocke Co and her death certificate documents names of her parents too. No children 4) Susannah b abt 1854 5) George W b abt 1856 6) Joseph M b abt 1858 7) Charles b abt 1862 Elizabeth may have had an out of wedlock child William Allen born abt 1874. I found information on LDS site that states she died in 1919 but I can't find her after 1880 so she might have remarried again. I am not related to this family, but was doing this for a descendant of Hamilton Allen, Linda Walker. I discovered it by accident one day while I was looking through some death records. Elizabeth is the sister of Hamilton Lewis who married Eliza Jane Click and that's the family I research are the Click's.
On page 24 in the book COLLIN COUNTY Pioneering in North Texas by HALL On page 24 there is a picture with the following writing under it. "The center building was once the toughest place in Collin County. All three buildings were saloons and quite notorious, but the center one was the best known and was called the Rock Front Saloon. Since they were on East Virginia Street near the railroad they attracted their trade from the railroad tne the people coming in by means of them. This saloon was the favorite hang-out of the James Boys and their friends when they came to McKinney .........."
