TEXARKANA USA GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY Meeting JUNE 27,2005 At the Texarkana Library Open at 6:30. Meeting begins promptly at 7 pm STEGER TO SPEAK Longtime member of the Oklahoma Historical Society, Charles A. Steger of Cass County, Texas, will be the guest speaker at the June meeting of the Texarkana USA Genealogical Society. The primary focus will be on the new 400,000 square foot Oklahoma History Center in the State Capitol Complex, which will open on November 16, 2005. The Center will house the History Museum and the OHS Research Library & Archives. According to Mr. Steger, in the collection are 3.5 million Native American records including those of the Dawes Commission. Also included are more than 720,000 photographs, dating from 1850. Microfilm records include early as well as 1900 Indian Territory census records and the 1910 to 1930 Oklahoma State census. There are 30,000 reels of newspapers on microfilm dating back to 1844. Copies of two Native American newspapers, The Phoenix and The Indian Journal exist from the early 1870’s. In addition to the Oklahoma Historical Society, Mr. Steger is a lifetime member of the Jefferson Historical Museum and the Caddo Lake Historical Committee. He is also a member of the Cass County, Marion County and Morris County Historical Commissions, the Cass County, Marion County, East Texas and Friends of Genealogy (Shreveport) Societies. He belongs as well, to the Circus Fans of America, the Endangered Ark Foundation, and the Friend of Battle of Honey Springs Oklahoma.
