I would like to know if anyone has visited the courthouse in Linden and what the proceudres are to visit and search through old records. I know the documents are old and probably not in any alphabetical setting, rather in a books by years. I'm particularly looking for "Bills of Sale" - before and after 1860. That seems like a good place to start or even earlier. I have a cousin who can go to the Linden courthouse, and would like to prepare him for the visit with what you can and cannot do; how far along in his search will depend upon the circumstances of search. Thanks for any help. You all are great! CD

Texas officially began recording deaths in 1903. The certificates are supposed to list the names of the parents and where they were from. Surnames: Holmes, Morris, McAdams, Crow Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/JhB.2ACE/160.216.225 Message Board Post: I am responding to a message you posted in 1999 on Ancestry.com message board about an ancestor of mine, Curtis Lafayette Morris. I have no idea if you still are at the same address, so please let me know if you receive this. My wife and I are new at the genealogy search game, and dont have much to share. We know only that Curtis and his wife Mary Crow were my g-g-g-g grandparents. I am descended from Curtis Morris and Mary Crow via their daughter Mahala (born 1811, died ca. 1875), who married Bryant Holmes (born ca. 1806, died Aug 1838) on May 18, 1825 in Monroe, Arkansas territory. They had six known children in Lafayette County, Arkansas, before they moved to the town of Nash, in Bowie County, Texas as part of one of Stephen F. Austin's original 100 settlers. From the map I have, their property was about thirty miles WNW of Texarkana. The six children were Andrew, Charles, Curtis Morris, Noreddon, Emily F., and Bryant II. Bryant II married Amanda Dialthia McAdams in Bowie County, and they had seven children, Charles William, Joseph Oscar, Nancy Adelia, Amanda Melvina, Bryant III, Morris Noreddon, and Mary Susan. Morris Noreddon Holmes was my great grandfather, and he lived and died in Bowie County. I knew him as a child, and he died in 1972. His son, Paul, recently passed away this past year in Lubbock, Texas. I would love to hear from you as to what information you may have on any branches of this family, and particularly on Curtis Lafayette Holmes and his predecessors. We can find little on the ancestral Holmeses before him. Thank you Gary Holmes
