COUCH We are saddened to report the passing of Mrs. E. H. Couch of Guntersville, Alabama, on November 27, 1965, at the age of 76. Mrs. Couch was a well-known irisarian, and had been a member of AIS and a Garden Judge for many years. In 1959 she organized the Marshall County Iris Society, and was instrumental in promoting more interest in growing newer and better irises throughout this region. Her gardens were always profuse with the latest and best varieties, and she kept in close contact with the best known hybridizers and what they were doing in the iris world. She was an outstanding authority and lecturer on the subjects of gardening, floriculture and conservation. A year before her passing, she was presented the Governor's Award as the "Most Outstanidng Woman of the Year in Conservation" in the state of Alabama in recognition of her life's work in conservation. It was through her work and influence that Mountain State Park, which now provides various recreation for people from all parts of the U.S. and many foreign countries. She was also an authority on early Alabama folk music and history. She is survived by her husband, Dr. E. H. Couch, two sons, Dr. Robert Couch of Bethesda, Me., and Owen Couch of Gunterville, and two daughters, Dr. Maxine Davis of Montevallo College and Mrs. Jeff Smith of Huntsville. Although her passing is a great loss, her high ideals and fine contributions to conservation and the world of gardening will stand in living tribute for years to come. Mrs. A.I. Kuykendall

Surnames: Riddle, Flory Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JhB.2ACE/698.711.1 Message Board Post: Dr. Matthew C. Riddle Dr. Matthew C. Riddle, a former member of the Board of Directors of the American Iris Society, passed away in December, 1965. He was modest and unassuming, but those who knew him remember well the scope of his accomplishments; and he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal of the AIS, an award which brought him real joy. His major interest was in woodland plants native to Oregon, and especially species irises. He made a number of trips to the Southern Coastal mountains, where he collected specimens of I. tenax, I. douglasiana and I. innominata. These species, and the improvements he made in a hybridizing program, were a constant delight to the students of irises who visited his garden. In recent years he also worked with tall bearded irises. Many of us know his ROYAL VIOLET, one which justifiably please him. We remember him as a kindly, courteous and thoughtful man who had real ability as a gardener, who had a passionate enthusiasm for irises, and who went far out of his way in his encouragement of others to work with all kinds of irises. Survivors include his widow, two daughters, a son, a sister, a brother and two grandchildren. Leo W. Framke HARRIET FLORY Harriet Lendore Flory, who died on February 2, 1966, was a member of the Central Valley Iris Society for many years as well as a member of AIS. She was an ardent iris lover and spent much of her time hybridizing. She will be missed by her many iris friends. Her cheerful smile and happy disposition endeared her to all that knew her. Mrs. L. P. Hayward

    1. From List Admin Please read
    2. Dana Thomas
    3. I wanted to wish all of you a Happy Holiday Season and Happy New Year! While I have your attention I wanted to send a few reminders... Reminders from the list administrator (Dana Thomas) I try to remind the lists I administer of these rules ever so often. This is in no way a reprimand it is simply a reminder. Should the need arise you can reach me at this addy treecrazyd@gmail.com What is ok: Just about anything that concerns genealogy and/or family history relating to the topic of the list. Not ok: Surname signatures. These are those signatures at the bottom of someones email message that list gazillions of surnames (last names) that they are researching. Our computer cannot distinguish between the surname signature and the message. It really messes things up if you're trying to search for a particular name. So, if you know how, turn your surname signature off. If you don't know how, then ask your first question! Not ok: HTML. Hyper Text Markup Language. A real no-no, since it just makes it impossible for many people to read your message. Plain text (no colors or anything fancy) is the best way to send anything to the list. Not ok: Attached files. With the wide variety of email programs in use, attached files don't work for everyone. Plain text (no colors or anything fancy) is the best way to send something to the list. Not ok: Copyrighted material. This includes private email that you've received from other people, articles from books, current newspapers, magazines, etc. It is ok to quote someones email message if you received it from this list. Not ok: Commercial posts. We aren't a billboard for the various publishing companies, software retailers, etc. Not ok: Flames. A derogatory or insulting comment that has been sent to everyone subscribed to the list is absolutely not tolerated. It is possible to disagree and remain civilized. The nature of this list is to assist in genealogy. The rule is one flame to the list about anyone or any issue, and you're out. Well, that's about it...back to regularly scheduled listing and have A wonderful Holiday Season and Happy New Year! :) Thanks for your attention, Dana -- (c)D. G. Thomas Please see my homepage: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~danasite/DGVT/
