Nov. 1992 James R. Ginn, age 86, died after a long illness on Saturday, March 13, 2004, in Bastrop, Texas. A lifelong Texan, James was born on November 9, 1917, in Brownsville. He proudly served his country as an Infantry Soldier in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1942-45, earning the Bronze Star Medal for bravery while in action in the Aleutian Islands. After receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1945, he returned to Brownsville and was employed by the Brownsville Navigation District at the Port of Brownsville, rising to the position of harbormaster. After a 30-year career with the District, he retired and moved to Bastrop with his beloved wife Anne in order to be closer to their children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Wilson Ginn; his sisters, Kathryn Hinkley, Gladys Thompson and Anna Amch; and his brothers, Robert and William Ginn. He is survived by his sister, Laura Jones of Beaufort, SC.; daughter, Anne Lassiter of Austin; sons, Edward Rhodes of Bastrop and Harrison Rhodes of Austin; nine grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Visitation was held at Marrs-Jones-Newby Funeral Chapel on Monday, March 15. A memorial Mass was held on Tuesday, March 16, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Bastrop Ascension Catholic Church. Graveside services followed at Bastrop Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Bastrop Humane Society, of which James was an ardent supporter, will be greatly appreciated. With the grace of God, may he rest in peace. We will miss him greatly. (Brownsville Herald, March 17, 2004)
