GLORIA RUIZ RODRIGUEZ Gloria Ruiz Rodriguez, 56, passed into God's hands on Tuesday, April 18, 2006, surrounded by her beloved family members at her residence. She was born on July 1, 1949, in Brownsville where she was also a lifelong resident. She was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church. She was a very active church keeper and a catechist teacher for 23 years. She was also a volunteer for the American Red Cross. She was preceded in death by her father, Jose C. Ruiz; her mother, Bernandina G. Ruiz on July 27, 1997; two sisters, Rosa Gutierrez on September 30, 2004, and Francisca "Panchita" Torres on February 1, 2005. She is survived by her beloved husband of 29 years, Jose Luis Rodriguez; two sons, Sergio (Cristina) Rodriguez and Jose Luis Rodriguez Jr.; four brothers, Julian, Rafael, Efrain and Juan Ruiz; three sisters, Cleotilde Castorena, Evangelina "Eva" Torres and Mary Brooks; and one grandson, Fabian Rodriguez. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. with a holy rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. today, Thursday, April 20, 2006, at Delta Funeral Chapel. EARNEST "PETE" FLOYD HURLEY Earnest "Pete" Floyd Hurley entered into the kingdom of our Heavenly Father on the morning of April 18, 2006, at the age of 75 years old. He was born in Magnum, Oklahoma, to Earnest Pete and Paralee Fawn "Riley" Hurley. He served in the military from 1951 to 1955 and was also a member of the Mason Brotherhood. He came to the Rio Grande Valley in 1975 and made Brownsville his home. He was very active at the Port of Brownsville and will be missed dearly. He is survived by his wife, Alicia Hurley; his son, Earnest E. Hurley of Brownsville, Texas; his daughters, Debbie Shields of Bennington, Okla., Becky Huddleston of Durant, Okla., Jeannie Hurley of Roberta, Okla., and Jo Ann Hurley of Brownsville, Texas. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Philips of Durant, Okla.; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren all of Oklahoma. Dad, you live in our hearts, and we will be Loving You Always! EUGENIA D. PLATA Eugenia D. Plata, 77, was called by the Lord on Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at Valley Grande Manor Nursing Home, surrounded by her family. She was born on February 20, 1929, in San Benito, Texas, and had been a lifelong Brownsville resident. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Eugenia will be remembered as a very friendly lady she got along with everyone. During her leisure time, Eugenia enjoyed being in her garden. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rosendo and Maria Del Pilar Plata; three brothers, Jose, Agapito and Alfonso Plata. She is survived by her brother, Rosendo Plata Jr., and one sister, Marta P. Flores, both of Brownsville. CIPRIANO BARAJAS LAYTON Cipriano Barajas Layton, 50, passed away on Thursday, April 13, 2006, in Carlisle, Ind. He was born on August 7, 1955, in Matamoros, Tamaulipas. Mr. Barajas is preceded in death by his father, Jose Barajas Larumbe; his brothers, Jose Barajas Layton Jr. and Guadalupe Barajas Layton; and his sister, Olivia Barajas de Peralta. Survivors include his mother, Rosa Layton viuda de Barajas; his sisters, Felipa Barajas viuda De Leon, Mari Barajas de Cardenas, Clara Barajas Layton, Maria de Jesus Barajas de Mata and Rosa Barajas de Gutierrez; his brother, Rolando Barajas Layton; his ex-wife, Evangelina Gomez; his children, Lizada Betzabeth Barajas de Chavez, Vanessa Barajas, Cipriano Barajas Jr. and Raquel Barajas; six grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. A 24-hour visitation service will be held with a 4 p.m. prayer service today, Thursday, April 20, 2006, at Funerarias Escobedo in Matamoros. LUCILLE JONES JONES Lucille Jones Jones, 86, peacefully joined her Lord and Savior on Monday, April 17, 2006, at the residence of her beloved son-in-law, the Rev. Leroy Roundtree, and her loving daughter, Linda Roundtree. She was born in Scranton, Pa., on May 11, 1919, to Margaret Carmany and Arthur Jones. She moved to Jacksonville, Fla., where she raised her three daughters, Sharon, Tracy and Linda. The love she had for children led her to teach with the Jacksonville Headstart Program where she touched and enriched the lives of many children, including her seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her great-grandson, Sean Paul Way, was her special "Little Boy." "Gigi," as she was lovingly called, had a special place in her heart for her "Booboo." Her incessant prayers, dedication and tender loving care will be truly missed. Sister Jones, as she was known to the members of St. James Missionary Baptist Church, Corinth Baptist Church Harlingen, Mt. Zion Baptist Church Harlingen and Rising Star Baptist Church Edinburg, was a devoted member of the Women's Mission. When her health permitted, she actively participated and volunteered at all the church functions. Her commitment and dedication was a fine example to all that knew her.
