The Brownsville Herald - Online Edition Obituaries, September 22, 2006 MARIA MAGDALENA SAAVEDRA Maria Magdalena Saavedra, 79, passed away Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, at her residence. She was a native of Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, and had been a Brownsville resident for several years. Her husband, Esteban Saavedra, preceded her in death. Mrs. Saavedra is survived by six sons, Cristobal, Edmundo, Juan, Francisco, Antonio and Jesus Saavedra; three daughters, Guadalupe Saavedra, Magdalena Saavedra and Martina Barbosa; a brother, Santiago Puentes; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held today, Friday, Sept. 22, 2006, from 2 to 9 p.m. with a holy rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at Garza Funeral Home. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. LUIS RAMIREZ Luis Ramirez, born on August 25, 1915, went into eternal rest on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, surrounded by his loving family. His son, Raul Ramirez, precedes Mr. Ramirez in death. Mr. Ramirez is survived by his loving wife, Maria De La Paz Ramirez; sons Luis Ramirez Jr., Feliciano Ramirez, Ramon Ramirez, Fidel Ramirez, Luis Alberto Ramirez, Luis R. Jimenez, Humberto R. Jimenez and Raul R. Ramirez; daughters Maria Ramirez, Maria De La Paz Ramirez, Elizabeth R. Cavazos, Maria Luisa Chavez, Belinda Avalos, Erika Ramirez and Lupita Ramirez; 24 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held today, Friday, Sept. 22, 2006, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a holy rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at Funeraria Del Angel Buena Vista. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Committal service will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park. LINN GORDON NELSON Linn Gordon Nelson, 81, passed away July 26, 2006, at his home in Brownsville, Texas. Mr. Nelson is preceded in death by his wife, Martha. He is survived by two sons, M. Elliott (Joan), of Yakima, Wash., and Paul Gordon (Jill) of Royal Oak, Mich.; one daughter, Karen N. Kent (Brett) of Silver Spring, Md.; and two step-grandsons, David Kent (Marian) and Jared Conklin. Originally from Michigan, he served in both the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He was wounded in combat at Iwo Jima and received the Purple Heart. He retired after 21 years as a sergeant with the Royal Oak, Mich., police force. After traveling extensively throughout the United States, it was Mr. Nelson's passion for aviation that led the couple to settle in the Valley, home of the Rio Grande Valley Wing of the Commemorative Air Force. He was an active member for many years. As an Iwo Jima survivor, he was drawn to the MMA in Harlingen, the home of the original Iwo Jima Memorial. He was a volunteer in their visitor's center.
