"BOBBIE" HUSTON LOCHT On January 26 2006 Bobbie Locht succumbed to cancer. There were many up-turns and several down-turns during her valiant battle for life. Her family was always her focus. Bobbie instilled strong family values and cohesiveness that endure to this day. Of special joy to her was the raising of her four sons, John Jr., Michael, Kevin and David. The rules never changed when the numbers on calendar changed and time has proven her to be correct. Bobbie was born in Fort Worth, Texas on September 19, 1934 and was adopted by her loving parents I. Louis Huston and his gracious wife Alice. She grew up in Texas and graduated from Brownsville High School in 1952. She continued her education in Texas and received her Registered Nurse Diploma in 1955 and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Houston in 1956. Upon graduation Bobbie became a head nurse in a tuberculosis hospital and then the office nurse for an internal medicine doctor in Harlingen Texas. In June 1957 she married John, and became an Air Force wife, dropped out of nursing for a while and began raising her family. Harlingen AFB was in need of a temporary nurse in 1960. Bobbie was asked to fill the position and she was back into nursing again. After a move to Mather AFB, CA, Bobbie settled at Homestead AFB in 1962 just in time for the Cuban Crisis. Bobbie continued her active life in community affairs and the Officers' Wives Club where she was elected to several offices including president. Bobbie became a veteran at coping with hurricanes and protecting her sons while John evacuated with the B-52s. Another move in 1967 brought her to Fort Walton Beach Fl while John was in Southeast Asia. 1969 saw her become the first school nurse for then Okaloosa-Walton Junior College. Among her responsibilities were attending all home basketball games in her nurses uniform, including cap, with her medical bag. Bobbie was well liked by the students. Some came by her home on weekends just to chat a while. Her four boys were really impressed when members of the basketball team dropped in to throw the ball around with them. This stint in nursing was interrupted by a move to RAF Upper Heyford England, where she continued her active life. Little league baseball demanded much of Bobbie's time in England. Her four boys were playing on three different teams on two different bases. To support all this required a lot of driving on a tight time schedule. She was always afraid of getting a ticket, but she didn't. While living on RAF Croughton, a near by sister base to Upper Heyford, she became active in the Croughton chapel program. She did everything from washing and ironing alter linens to hosting dinners and just plain get-togethers with the base chaplains as well as English associate chaplains. These friendships have lasted well after she returned to the United States. One of these chaplains, Father Joe McGahren, (Col USAF Ret) is flying from New York to conduct Bobbie's funeral Mass. As a squadron commander's wife her responsibilities were wide and varied. When two squadron members met a tragic deaths at separate times Bobbie was way ahead; she had everything organized and was a soothing effect on everyone present. In 1974 Bobbie found herself back in the Fort Walton Beach area busily raising her sons. With two of her boys now in college and two in high school she heeded the call back into nursing. In 1979 Bobbie began working on 4 South, then a medical/surgical floor of the then Humana Hospital. She quickly proved herself to be a very knowledgeable, capable, caring and efficient nurse. Bobbie earned the respect of her fellow nurses, doctors and all those associated with her. Under her leadership as 4 South Charge Nurse the station was awarded the "BDN" plaque by family members of one of the patients. "BDN" translates to "Best Damn Nurse". In addition to her charge nurse duties Bobbie accepted the responsibility of quality control for the floor. She created an office at home, as Bobbie was not going to let paper work and meetings interfere with her nursing. Eventually Bobbie requested a transfer to the 11-7 shift as a staff nurse and cut her schedule to four nights a week. She then was able to enjoy nursing until her retirement in 1997. Bobbie enjoyed being around her sons' friends and was affectionately called "Moma Locht" by them. Bobbie is survived by John, her husband of 48 years, 7 months, 17 days, 22 hours and 30 minutes; her son, John, Jr. and his wife Joni of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; her son Michael and his wife Martina along with granddaughters Natasha and Sabrina of Destin; her son Kevin and his wife Sherry along with grandsons Josh Daily and Huston Locht and granddaughter Madison Locht of Fort Walton Beach; her son David and his wife Gwen along with grandson David, Jr. and granddaughter Danielle of Destin; her sister Sandie Huston of El Cerrito, Calif. who did a marvelous job of caring for her at the hospital for hours upon hours; and a very close family friend Margaret Clements of Fort Walton Beach. Additionally she is survived by four nieces and their families in Texas and Alabama. Bobbie's family wishes to extend their deepest gratefulness and appreciation to all the wonderful individuals at the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center who cared for Bobbie during three hospitalizations since November 2005. The care and professionalism witnessed by all of us was simply superb. Bobbie's final days were peaceful as she silently slipped into a better life. Our family and her many, many friends have lost a wonderful person but her legacy will live on for a long, long time. The Locht Family will be receiving friends on Sunday, January 29, 2006 at Emerald Coast Funeral Home from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 30, 2006 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Bobbie's friends and extended families are welcomed to join her family to express the celebration of her amazing life. We are so blessed to have known her. The Brownsville Herald 1135 E.
