Smith, 87, of Waterloo, Iowa, formerly Brownsville, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa. She married Robert L. Smith on Nov. 11, 1939. She resided in Brownsville from 1991 to May 2006. She is survived by her husband, two daughters, Karen Hibben Levi (Alan) of Waterloo; Janice Elefsrud Heng (Robert) of Lincoln, Neb.; 13 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Waterloo. Arrangements by Locke Funeral Home, www.LockeFuneralHome.com HAYDEN ORVILLE HAYS Hayden Orville Hays passed away on Aug. 24, 2006, in Dallas, Texas at the age of 79 after a lengthy illness. He was the cherished husband of Allie (Louise) Hays for 58 years. Besides being survived by his wife, he was the devoted father of three children and their spouses, Christine Smoak (Franklin), James Hayden Hays (Lisa), and Beverly Goode (Phillip). He was the loving grandfather of Suzanne, Justin and Kathleen Smoak, Austin and Landon Hays, and Lauren Goode. He is also survived by his sister, Peggy Copenhaver of Brownsville and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters, Evelyn Hudson, Gloria Butler, and infant son, Hayden Hays Jr. Mr. Hays was born on May 7, 1927 in Brownsville, Texas, to the late Maude Ray and Hayden G. Hays. He graduated from Brownsville High School in 1944, served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. for two years and went into the plumbing business with his father. He retired in 1991 from his self-owned plumbing and heating business, Hayden Hays and Son Plumbing in Brownsville. He was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church of Brownsville where he taught an adult Sunday school class for several years, was a charter member of the West Brownsville Lions Club, and gave many years of service to the West Brownsville Little League in several capacities. Over the years, he loved to hunt and fish, nurture his fruit trees, meet with his friends in the "Coffee Club", and dance with his wife. A memorial service and celebration of life for Mr. Hays will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, 2006 at the First United Methodist Church of Brownsville, 1225 Boca Chica Blvd. The Brownsville Herald 1135 E.
