OBITUARIES JESUS G. RAMOS Jesus G. Ramos, 81, died early Saturday, August 12, 2006, after a valiant struggle with cancer, at his home in Villa Nueva, in Brownsville. He died as he wished: at home, on the land on which he was born. Although the disease won this battle, it cannot over-come the memories of his fighting spirit, his generosity, nor the inspiration he gave to his children. Mr. Ramos was born on Dec. 12, 1924 to Elvira Trevino Ramos of Villa Nueva and Martin Ramos of Rio Hondo. He was a deco-rated veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Air Force in the European/African Theater where he received two bronze stars, and one silver cluster, among others. Although at the time of his entry into the service he had a limited education and com-mand of English, he overcame this to rise to the rank of sergeant and later served as a technical instructor. In 1948 he married Maria Rosa (Rosie) Ramirez, and moved to East Chicago, Indiana, where he worked for Inland Steel. In 1953 he moved his family to Gary, Indiana, where he was an active member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Holy Rosary Church. Mr. and Mrs. Ramos were both proud of their Valley roots and helped found two social clubs, the "Latineers" and the "Texans," to keep their connection to home strong. He retired after 35 years of service at Inland. In 1988 he and his wife returned to his boyhood home to live. His children remember him as a very active, energetic, brilliant and curious man always busy and always learning. As such he was a master of many, many skills which he generously shared with others. It was not uncommon for him to drop everything if a friend needed a hand and help neighbors build additions to their homes, re-wire rooms, refurbish basements, etc. His generosity extended to helping many people from the lower Valley find work in northern Indiana, and his children remember many times housing other families in the basement apartment he constructed, until they had the money for their own homes. He was a master gardener and proud of the produce he brought to the table from his little garden, especially his chiles. He en-joyed cooking, carpentry, and the company of his many friends. In addition, he loved old movies and could recite nearly every star, supporting actor, and director of the 1940's films he would view with his children. Although Mr. Ramos was orphaned at a young age and never completed school past the sixth grade, he inspired his three children to work hard at their education and to attend college. They fondly remember how articulate he was (in both languages) and his gift for descriptive storytelling. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rosie, his parents, his grandfather, Atanacio Trevino, and his brother Martin Ra-mos. Survivors, include his current spouse, Maria Cristina; his children, Elvira, of Brownsville, Jesus, Jr., of Lombard, Illinois, and Di-ana, of Sacramento, CA; his grandchildren, Daniel of Brownsville and Katarina and Gregorio, of Lombard, Illinois; three brothers, Margarito Guzman, Brownsville, and Gilberto Ramos, and Alfredo Ramos, of Florida. He is also survived by his wife's children, Rosa Elva Campos and Hilario Campos, both of Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, Mexico and Daniel Campos of Brownsville. He is further survived by many, many other relatives and friends, and used to joke that he was related in some way to most of the fami-lies of Brownsville.
