CHRISTINE "CHRISSIE" BOWIE BUCKLIN Christine "Chrissie" Bowie Bucklin passed away early Sunday, morning, July 2, 2006, after a lengthy illness. Chrissie was born Christine Ferguson Bowie to Christine Ferguson Kerr and John Caldwell Bowie on December 10, 1911, in Bloomfield, Iowa. Her parents were Scottish immigrants who first settled in Iowa then moved to San Benito in 1916, as part of the Bowie Clan that are among the early settlers of San Benito. She attended San Benito schools graduating from high school in 1929. Upon graduation from high school, she attended Brownsville Junior College as it was known then and later graduated from Texas A&I University in Kingsville. Teaching was her lifelong profession beginning in 1932, at Fred Booth Elementary School in San Benito. She taught there until her marriage to Edward I. "Red" Bucklin in 1936, after which she lived in Kansas City and St. Louis, Mo. Chrissie and Red returned to San Benito in 1945. She resumed her teaching career at Fred Booth School for the 1947-48 school year. In 1955, she went to Highland School as Head Teacher and then in 1957, returned to Fred Booth as Assistant Principal until her retirement in 1982, after 38 years of loyal and dedicated service to the San Benito School District. As a result of her service and the great respect the citizens of San Benito had for her, May 21, 1982, was officially declared "Chrissie Bucklin Day" by the San Benito C.I.S.D. and the San Benito City Commission. She was very active in professional organizations. She was a member and past president of the local Chapter of Texas State Teachers Association, Parent Teachers Association, a member of the National Education Association and the American Association of University Women. She was president of the Alpha Mu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional educational fraternity, and a member of the Zeta Rho Chapter. She was a lifelong, dedicated member of the Presbyterian Church of San Benito where she taught Sunday School for a record number of years not missing a Sunday unless she were out of the county, state or country. She also was active in the Presbyterian Women of the Church and served as Ladies Circle chairman many times. On May 14, 2006, the dedication of the Chrissie B. Bucklin Board Room took place at the First Presbyterian Church. The Board Room was originally her Sunday school room where she taught her "wee ones" (as she referred to the children in her classes) for many decades. She was a charter member and past president of the Scottish Society of South Texas to which she was named to one of its highest honors, Rose Queen. She was a 70-year member of The P.E.O. Sisterhood serving Chapter L. as its President and was a Charter Member and past president of Chapter CW. Chrissie was also a member and past Director of the Pan American Round Table, member of the International Good Neighbor Commission, the Valley Symphony Association, the Community Concert Association, and the Camille Playhouse. She was named Volunteer of the Year by the Marine Military Academy in 1991. She is survived by many cousins including Ann and Buster Stevenson of Brownsville, Patricia Bowie Davis and Catherine Bowie of Harlingen and Charles and Louise Bowie of Maryland. Chrissie is also survived by many friends among whom are Billie and Marshall Storey now of Beeville and Lupita Abrego who was thought of as a "granddaughter". She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward I. "Red" Bucklin as well as her parents, Chris and John Bowie; her sister, Betty Bowie Smith and her nephew, Jim Smith whom she and "Red" loved and raised as a son. Donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of San Benito or to a charity of the donor's choice. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2006, at the First Presbyterian Church of San Benito. The Rev. Ed Robertson will officiate with the Rev. Dori Zubizaretta assisting. Frausto, 72, was called upon by our Lord on Saturday, July 1, 2006 at her residence surrounded by her loving family. Viola was born on February 7, 1934 in Brownsville, Texas. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who enjoyed cooking and baking for her family. She spent numerous afternoons working in her garden, reading her Bible, or enjoying the company of her loved ones. She devoted her life to taking care of her special daughter, Belinda. She also spent countless hours doing what she loved best: campaigning for those politicians whom she admired such as Ray Ramon, Aurora De La Garza, Solomon Ortiz, Judge Migdalia Lopez, and Laura Betancourt to name a few. In her earlier years, she was very involved with the community; whether it was volunteering at different community centers or making speeches throughout the city in honor of the politicians she was supporting. In 1975, she was presented with the Citizen of the Week award on the Sunday show, "Aqui Rogelio." She was preceded in death by her mother, Guadalupe Hernandez; three brothers, Martin Palomo, Esteban Hernandez, and Alfredo Cervantes; and a son, Hector Frausto. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Graciano Juan (Juanita) Frausto; three daughters, Delia (Juan) Aguilar, Belinda Frausto, and Armandina (Vicente) Reyes; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren all of Brownsville. Also surviving are three sisters, Kathryn (Luis) Frausto, Juana (Raul) Cortinas, both of Brownsville and Inez Cortez of Monte Morelos; three brothers, Jesus (Angelina) Palomo, Gilberto Hernandez, and Benjamin (Juana) Cervantes all of Brownsville; numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with recitation of the holy rosary at 7 p.m. today, Tuesday, July 4, 2006, at Treviño Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Resurrection will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2006, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park. Honored to be serving as her pallbearers are, Eduardo Frausto Sr., Vicente Reyes Sr., Vicente Reyes Jr., Pete Guzman, Luis Frausto Jr., Encarnacion Mancias, Juan Carlos Aguilar, and Armando Diaz. Barrios, 87, entered into eternal peace on Friday, June 30, 2006, at Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville. Tomasa is preceded in death by her husband, Roberto Barrios; a son, Antonio Barrios; her brothers and sisters, Isabel Silguero, Ernesto Cavazos, and Carlos Cavazos. She is survived by her children, Rafael Barrios (Patricia), Elvira Martinez; Roberto Barrios Jr. (Mary) and Ernesto Barrios; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, numerous nephews and nieces. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a holy rosary to be recited at 7 p.m., today, Tuesday, July 4, 2006, at Funeraria Del Angel Buena Vista. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2006, at St. Luke Catholic Church. Committal service will follow to Buena Vista Burial Park. ORALIA "LALITA" ANDAVERDE Oralia "Lalita" Andaverde, 76, passed away Sunday, July 2, 2006, at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Brownsville. She was a native of Matamoros, Mexico and had been a resident of Brownsville for 18 years. She was preceded in death by her son, Jose Luis Andaverde. Lalita is survived by her husband, Eleno Andaverde; two daughters, Gloria (Jorge) Martinez and Martha (Jose) Quezada; five grandchildren, Jorgito and Eddy Martinez, and Lucy, Paola and Jose Quezada. Visitation and a rosary service were held Monday, July 3, 2006. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, July 4, 2006, at Garza Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.
