A native of Devine, he had been a canal rider for the Brownville (sic) Irrigation and Drainage District for the past 23 years. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Portway Baptist Church of Brownsville. Survivors include his wife, Wynema B. Walker of Brownsville; two brothers, Pete Walker of Brownsville and Bernice Walker of San Benito; a sister, Hermie Ellis of Buchannan Lake, Texas, numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives. The Brownsville Herald, Sunday, May 15, 1988 HANNA'S TOP STUDENTS ALSO ACTIVE IN WORK AT CHURCH By Brenda Alvarado Herald Staff Writer Homer Hanna High School valedictorian Robert Baker and salutatorian Jeffrey Johnston share one thing besides academic achievement and that is "inspiration." They are active in their church youth groups and both have strong feelings about the future. Baker, 18, has been accepted to the University of Houston. He plans to major in architecture and eventually work in the field of environmental design. Outside of school work, Baker is involved with the Youth Group at Central Christian Church and is a volunteer at Big Brothers/Big Sisters. He said his parents don't hassle him about homework, but they have always encouraged him and given him a lot of liberty. This, he explained, has in turn provided a good balance. "It's like two different worlds, two different lives, the weekdays at school and then the weekends. It (achieving) really all began when I was a freshman," he recalled. "I wasn't involved in sports then. I was only on the student council so I had a better opportunity to work on grades and get on the honor roll," he said. "Now, it's something in our family. There's never been anyone up there and there hasn't been a tradition of geniuses. So, it's like I'm the first in the family to go so far and it's been rewarding for me." Baker, the son of Mr. ad Mrs. Robert Baker of Brownsville, is on the Eagle varsity basketball team and vice president of the National Honor Society. His classmate Jeffrey Johnston is treasurer for the National Honor Society, a member of the junior varsity tennis team and a photographer/reporter for the school newspaper. He was a farmer in the Brownsville-El Jardin area since 1921 and was a member of the first Baptist Church of Brownsville. He formerly served as a member of the board of directors of the Cameron County Water District No. 5. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Theoda (Billie) Renfrow of Brownsville; two sons, Roy W. Renfrow of Brownsville and Robert H. Renfrow of Friendswood; a daughter, Billie Merle Loop of La Marque; tow sisters, Mrs. Calestia R. Gobble of Brownsville and Mrs. Floretta R. Sylvester of Sequim, Wash., 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held Thursday at p.m. at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bob G. ALVIS LEE FLETCHER Alvis Lee Fletcher, 79, of Brownsville, died Monday at Audie Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital in San Antonio. Born in McKinney, Texas, he joined the Cavalry at Fort Brown in 1938 and later transferred to the U.S. Air Force where he was a photographer. He was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War and retired after 21 years of service. He returned to Brownsville and worked at the Port of Brownsville until 1967 and had served as a substitute teacher in the Brownsville School District. Survivors include a daughter, Marcia Barbosa; four sisters, Louise Ramsey, Myrtle Hickman, and Wanda Fletcher all of Oklahoma and Vera Woodward of Kansas; a brother, James Fletcher of California and two grandchildren, Heather and Shannon Barbosa both of Brownsville. Funeral services will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home Chapel, 945 Palm Blvd. with Rabbi Harry Lawrence officiating. The body will be cremated. THE TOP FIVE International Bank of Commerce recently recognized the academic achievements of the valedictorians for high school in Brownsville. The valedictorians are Robert Baker, from Hanna High School; Alma Cardenas, from Villa Maria; H Sin-Chih, from Port High School; Donald Williams, from Pace; and Jude Benavides from St. Joe Academy.
