He was born September 28, 1917 in Beeville, Texas. His parents were Francisco Balli and Cipriana Lara. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Ygnacio and Diego Balli. Mr. Balli is survived by his wife, Amalia G. Balli; children, Javier (Gerri) Balli of California, Olga B. Medrano, Sonia B. Gutierrez, Irene (Mateo) Silva, and Conrado (Sandy) Balli. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. JULIETA RAGA MONCHOLI WOOD Julieta Raga Moncholi Wood left this earth to join our Heavenly Father on Tuesday, May 2, 2006. Julieta was born in Tampa, Florida on June 20, 1916. Her mother, Adele Botet Moncholi (Valencia, Spain), her father Francisco Raga (Barcelona, Spain), and her husband, Ray Wesley Wood, preceded her in death. She graduated from the conservatory of Spain and traveled extensively. She served in the Brownsville Women's Auxiliary and supported the American Heart Association for many years. After calling Brownsville home for 30 years, she moved to Weslaco to live with her only child, Patricia Wood Muñoz and her son-in-law, Jessey Muñoz. Her legacy will continue through her three grandchildren, Jennifer Marie, Julissa Nicole and Jonathan J. Andrew Muñoz and great-grandson, Joshua Muñoz Lake. There will be emptiness in lives of those she touched. She left a wonderful example of faith, charity and unconditional love. ELIZABETH "BETTY" HARDEE ZANDER July 23, 1936 - April 18, 2006 Elizabeth "Betty" Hardee Zander, born July 23, 1936, in Jacksonville, Fla., passed away in her home on April 18, 2006, after a lengthy illness. She was a longtime resident of Morgan City, La., and Brownsville, Texas. Her parents, Noble and Julia Elizabeth Smith Hardee, preceded her in death. Betty graduated from the University of Houston and taught in Brownsville ISD for two years and in the St. Mary Parish School System for 22 years. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Morgan City and was a member of the "Come Lord Jesus" Bible study group. Survivors include her husband, Charles "Chuck" Robert Zander Sr.; daughters Julia Alexis Garcia of Marietta, Ga., Mary Victoria "Vicki" Garcia Newton of Lafayette and Lisa Suzanne Garcia Mire of Morgan City; stepchildren Cindy Zander Salathe of Robert, Carolyn Zander of Ponchatoula, Charles Zander Jr. of Rochester, N.Y., and Jeff Zander of Hammond; sons-in-law Glenn Newton, Ronnie Mire and Wayne Salathe; and daughters-in-law Mary Zander and Laura Zander. Other survivors include her sister, Suzanne Hardee Trice of Center Point, Texas; uncles Marvin Hardee Sr. of Morgan City and James A. OBITUARIES SARAH MOSER SHEETS Sarah Moser Sheets, passed away April 20, 2006, in Wilsonville, Oregon, after a short illness. She was 95. Mrs. Sheets was born Sarah Elizabeth Moser, July 28, 1910, in Dawn, Missouri. She graduated with a degree in music from Central College in Fayette, Missouri, in 1933. She married J. Eugene (Gene) Sheets in New York City on July 3, 1937, and had two children, Jim and Sandra. They moved to Brownsville, Texas, in 1948 where Mr. Sheets became manager of the Brownsville Social Security Office. Mrs. Sheets was a substitute teacher in the Brownsville school system in the 1950s and played piano accompaniment for the Brownsville High School Choir. She was the assistant librarian at Brownsville High School from 1955 until 1965 and then became head librarian at Stell Junior High School until her retirement in 1969. She was active in the First Presbyterian Church, Brownsville. She often played piano ducts with the organist at Sunday services. She was active in the Brownsville Medical Center auxiliary program for many years, contributing over 1,000 hours of volunteer time. In addition, she volunteered her time at the local food bank. Mrs. Sheets was preceded in death by her husband, Gene, in 1986 and her son, Jim, in 2003. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Berry of Wilsonville, Oregon; her granddaughter, Nena, and husband Michael; and great grandsons Chris and Ryan; her grandson, John, and wife, Victoria, all of Oregon; her daugher-in-law, Doris Washburn of Kansas City, Missouri, two nieces and two nephews. Memorials may be made to the Youth Music Scholarship Fund at the First Presbyterian Church, 435 Palm Blvd., Brownsville, TX 78520. No services are planned. JOHN ALTON GLOOR John Alton Gloor, 50, of Brownsville, entered into eternal rest on Thursday April 20, 2006, in Brownsville, Texas. He was a loving husband and wonderful father. John was a prominent Brownsville native and a graduate of Brownsville High School and continued his education at St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas. He was a past member of the Brownsville Jaycees and the Board of Directors of Coastal Banc. He is currently a member of the Lower Valley Builders and Developers Association, and was most recently appointed to serve on the city's Capital Improvements Advisory Committee. Gloor Development was instrumental in creating many Brownsville subdivisions. Most recent projects include Cross Country Trails and Mission Trails. His proudest accomplishment was the Woods Subdivision in north Brownsville. His other passion was music and guitars. He had an extensive music collection. He loved playing his guitar and was in the local band Deja Blues. He was also an avid collector and trader of vintage guitars. He was preceded in death by his father, Alton V.W. Gloor. John is survived by his loving wife Catherine; two daughters, Ashley and Chelsey; his mother, June Gloor; two brothers, Les (wife Chris) and Len (wife Brenda), all of Brownsville, and sister, Ruth Jamail (husband Brandon) of Houston, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews. CIPRIANO BARAJAS LAYTON Cipriano Barajas Layton, 50, passed away on Thursday, April 13, 2006, in Carlisle, Ind. He was born on August 7, 1955, in Matamoros, Tamaulipas. Mr. Barajas is preceded in death by his father, Jose Barajas Larumbe; his brothers, Jose Barajas Layton Jr. and Guadalupe Barajas Layton; and his sister, Olivia Barajas de Peralta. Survivors include his mother, Rosa Layton viuda de Barajas; his sisters, Felipa Barajas viuda De Leon, Mari Barajas de Cardenas, Clara Barajas Layton, Maria de Jesus Barajas de Mata and Rosa Barajas de Gutierrez; his brother, Rolando Barajas Layton; his ex-wife, Evangelina Gomez; his children, Lizada Betzabeth Barajas de Chavez, Vanessa Barajas, Cipriano Barajas Jr. and Raquel Barajas; six grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. LUCILLE JONES JONES Lucille Jones Jones, 86, peacefully joined her Lord and Savior on Monday, April 17, 2006, at the residence of her beloved son-in-law, the Rev. Leroy Roundtree, and her loving daughter, Linda Roundtree. She was born in Scranton, Pa., on May 11, 1919, to Margaret Carmany and Arthur Jones. She moved to Jacksonville, Fla., where she raised her three daughters, Sharon, Tracy and Linda. The love she had for children led her to teach with the Jacksonville Headstart Program where she touched and enriched the lives of many children, including her seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her great-grandson, Sean Paul Way, was her special "Little Boy." "Gigi," as she was lovingly called, had a special place in her heart for her "Booboo." Her incessant prayers, dedication and tender loving care will be truly missed. Sister Jones, as she was known to the members of St. James Missionary Baptist Church, Corinth Baptist Church Harlingen, Mt. Zion Baptist Church Harlingen and Rising Star Baptist Church Edinburg, was a devoted member of the Women's Mission. When her health permitted, she actively participated and volunteered at all the church functions. Her commitment and dedication was a fine example to all that knew her.
