JOYCE ANNA SLAGER Joyce Anna Slager, of Rancho Viejo, went home to be with her Lord on Monday morning, July 17, 2006. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert R. Slager, and her grandson, Brad Slager. Left to mourn her death are her sister, Jeanette Haugh of Illinois; her sons, David R. (Linda) Slager, and Robert A. (Christine) Slager; her grandchildren, Vickie (Doug) Elley, Russell A. (Sandra) Slager and Rachel F. (Jimmy) Lee, along with six great-grandchildren. LYDIA RODRIGUEZ LOPEZ Lydia Rodriguez Lopez, 74, went into eternal rest on Sunday, July 16, 2006, at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Brownsville. She was born on Sept. 17, 1931. She was a lifelong resident of Brownsville. She is preceded in death by her husband, Abelardo O. Lopez Sr.; parents Andres Rodriguez and Juanita Trevino Rodriguez; and brothers Arturo Rodriguez and Alberto Dunes. Mrs. Lopez is survived by her children to whom she dedicated her whole life to, Evangelina L. Lara, Abelardo Lopez Jr., Ernesto R. Lopez, Sylvia L. Stevens, Rigoberto R. Lopez, Lionel R. Lopez, and Imelda L. Lopez; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Visitation was from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2006. DR. LUIS GILBERTO GALVAN SALCEDO Dr. Luis Gilberto Galvan Salcedo, 58, of Brownsville, died Monday, July 17, 2006, at his home. Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mex-ico, he previously lived in Avon Lake, Ohio, and lived the last 25 years in Brownsville. He was a surgeon with a specialty in obstet-rics. He graduated from the University of Guadalajara-School of Medicine on Jan. 4, 1978, at the age of 29. He was still in active practice. A joyous man, he lived life to the fullest. Stopping to visit with all his many patients and friends, walking his beloved dog could take two hours as he went throughout the neighborhood. He was giving and warm and dedicated to his patients. He loved to dance and enjoyed rock 'n' roll music and his mariachis. He was a big Dallas Cowboys football and Chivas soccer fan. He was actively involved in the local kickball league. Dr. Galvan was readily available to volunteer at local school functions. He was the beloved husband for 31 years of Susan Galvan. He is survived by his mother, Brigida Salcedo; his sisters, Ofelia Gal-van Salcedo, Martha Galvan Salcedo and Guadalupe Galvan Salcedo; and his brother, Mario Galvan Salcedo, all of Guadalajara, Mexico; his daughters, Sarah Nicole Galvan of San Antonio and Michelle Susan Galvan Mendez (Mario Mendez-husband) of Hous-ton. He was preceded in death by his father, Alejandro Galvan Diaz. Visitation will begin from 1 to 5 p.m. today, Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home. The body will be trans-ferred to St. Luke's Catholic Church and visitation will resume at 6:30 p.m., followed by the recitation of the holy rosary at 7 p.m. at St. Luke's. Melendez, 96, of Brownsville entered into eternal rest at his residence surrounded by his loving family Sunday, July 16, 2006. A member of a pioneer Brownsville family, Mr. Melendez was associated with the Colunga Bus Company for many years as a driver. He proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army, Company A, 260th Engineers Combat Battalion. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carmen Martinez Melendez; a son, Ramiro Melendez; a grandson, Robert Tony Melendez; his parents, Telesforo Melendez and Lucinda Rendon Melendez; and his brothers and sisters. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Roberto Melendez Jr., Reynaldo Melendez, Rodolfo Melendez (Jovita), all of Brownsville, Rene Melendez (Kim) of Minnesota and Lucinda Wright of Brownsville. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was born Dec. 25, 1935, in Brownsville to Angelita and Nieves Padron. Joe was a lifelong native of Brownsville and retired after 25 years from Levis Strauss. He is proceeded in death by his parents, Angelita, and Nieves Padron; one brother, Roberto (+Mary Lou) of Wis.; and one sister, Maria Luisa (+Ramon) Vela, of Florida. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years of marriage, Celina L. Padron; one daughter, Mayte P. (Guillermo Jr.) Gonzalez; two sons, Jose Carlos Padron and Richard (Elena) Padron. He is also survived by three sisters, Virgina P. (+Juventino) Olivares of Brownsville, Maria De Jesus P. (Jesse) Perez of Harlingen, Lydia P. Mr. Herrera is survived by his wife, Lazara E. Herrera; six children, Maria Elena Herrera, Socorro Herrera, Francisca Herrera, Cesar Covarrubias, Saul Herrera, Bertha Martinez; numerous grandchildren; brother, Santiago Herrera; two sisters, Julia Herrera and Paula Herrera. Surnames: CHUNN, CURRAN Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GhB.2ACE/967 Message Board Post: I am trying to find information on my great-grandparents who lived in/around San Benito, Cameron County, TX, from sometime after 1900 until at least 1921. They are William Grimes Chunn (1836-1921) and Levenia Ruth Curran (1848-1930). In 1920, they were living there with there son Raymond Chunn and his family. William Grimes Chunn died in San Benito on 27 Dec 1921. I am interested in any information, but most especially I would like to know in which cemetery he is buried. Thanks!

The only listing I could find for Hinton in the Rio Hondo/Harlingen area is: Hinton, Gerald & Jean 9101 W Business 83 Harlingen, TX 78552-2088 (956) 423-5740 The following 2 obits contain the surname Hinton: they are the only things containing Hinton that came up on a search at the Brownsville Herald. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and served a one-year tour of duty in Vietnam. Kermit retired from El Paso Natural Gas in 2001 after 30 years of service. Preceding Kermit in death were a brother, Karl; and his parents, Kermit and Ruth. FISCHER, 74, of Brownsville, passed away at his residence surrounded by his loving family Tuesday, July 11, 2006. Today we mourn the passing of a great patriarch of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. George Price entered into the Heavenly Kingdom into the arms of his Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, July 7, 2006. George Price was born in Valdosta, Ga., September 27, 1911 and was a retired minister. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Monica Sandra Linski and a son, George Price III. He is survived by his daughter, Georgianna M. Bishop and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. His dear friend, Bunny Gomez and her husband, Al, also survive him. Price was a World War II veteran having served with the Merchant Marine Service as lieutenant junior grade. Price was admitted to the Florida bar in 1936 and practiced law in Florida. In 1959 the future Pastor Price was led to seek entry into the Missouri Synod Ministry. He served parishes in South Florida from 1963 to 1980 and was Chaplain at Winter Haven Resort for four years. He served as Vacancy Pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in the fall and winter of 1990-91 and became Vacancy Pastor at Fishers of Men in Port Isabel. In July of 1994 he was called to serve Trinity Brownsville which he lovingly did until retirement in 1999. He continued teaching Bible Study at Trinity for several years until his health failed. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. Memorial in memory of George Price may be directed to the donor's favorite charity. A memorial service for George Price will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, July 13, 2006, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 901 Boca Chica Blvd. The Rev. David Byler will be officiating the service. HUGH EUGENE "JACK" WOLCOTT Hugh Eugene "Jack" Wolcott, 86, left this earth Sunday, July 9, 2006. He passed away at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen surrounded by his family. Jack was born in Lakota, Iowa on Jan. 20, 1920 to Ethel Peshia and Lawrence Wolcott. Jack and his wife Marge moved to the Rio Grande Valley in 1960, residing first in Brownsville. They lived in Los Fresnos since 1972. Jack owned South Texas By-Products Company for many years and was an active member and respected businessman of the Los Fresnos Community. Serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II he was assigned to the meat packing unit in Spokane, Wash. He is preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie; mother, Ethel Peshia Wolcott; father, Lawrence Wolcott and eight of 10 brothers and sisters. Jack is survived by his sister, Maxine Wolcott Harvey; brother, Don Wolcott; daughter, Donna Wolcott Bressler (Joe) of Rancho Viejo; son, Jack C. Trimble passed away June 29, 2006, in Plano, Texas. J.B. was born April 15, 1917, in Orlando, Florida, to Fred and Rena Trimble. He graduated from high school in Brownsville, Texas, and attended Texas A&M. On October 18, 1947, J.B. married Lucille Elizabeth Holt in Washington, D.C. He is a past Worshipful Master of the Rio Grande Masonic Lodge No. 81 in Brownsville, Texas, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of First United Methodist Church of Plano. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Leonard B. Trimble and sisters Gladys Abbott and Ethel Adams. He is survived by his loving wife, Lucille Elizabeth Trimble; daughter Deborah Ann Moss and husband Jim and their children Eric and Shelley; son Rick Trimble and wife Debbie; daughter Betty Jo Carden and husband James and their children Pamela and Jimmy. All who knew him could appreciate his work ethic. We learned so much from him and the examples he set. Survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Maria de la Luz, and children Olga Reinhart, Linda Cisneros, Yvonne Broussard and Nestor Cisneros of San Antonio, Texas, and sons Alfred Jr. and Henry Cisneros of Houston, Texas. Survived by grandchildren, Diana, Matthew and David Reinhart, Dominick and Sara Broussard and Michael Fritz Cisneros of Austin, Texas, and many loving nephews and nieces. Alfredo was preceded in death by brothers Gregorio, Antonio, Enrique, Ernesto and Raul, and is survived by brother Carlos Cisneros of Brownsville, Texas. Alfredo attended the Immaculate Conception School, and graduated from Brownsville High School in 1941. He graduated from Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Oklahoma with a specialty in electronics. A pioneer in radio and television in South Texas, Mr. Cisneros was the owner of Cisneros TV & Appliance and Rio Grande Moving. RAY STANLEY WILHELM, OMI 1932 - 2006 Father Ray Stanley Wilhelm, 74, died suddenly in Midland, Texas, on July 5, 2006. The son of Raymond M. Wilhelm and Alma (Dreier) Wilhelm, Father Ray was born on February 3, 1932, in San Antonio, Texas. After graduating from St. Mary's Parochial School, he attended St. Anthony's Junior Seminary in San Antonio. He entered St. Peter's Novitiate in Mission, Texas, in 1951, where he professed First Vows on May 31, 1952. His philosophy and theology studies were pursued at DeMazenod Scholasticate (now Oblate School of Theology) in San Antonio. It was there that he professed Perpetual Vows on May 31, 1955. Upon completion of his theology courses, he was ordained a priest by Archbishop Robert E. Lucey at St. Mary's Church, San Antonio, Texas, on June 1, 1958. Father Ray received his first assignment in 1959 as a professor at DeMazenod Scholasticate. In the spring of 1960, he went to Catholic University in Washington, D.C., for graduate studies; and in November of 1960, attended the Gregorian University in Rome and obtained a degree in Canon Law in June of 1962. He returned to DeMazenod Scholasticate - Oblate College of the Southwest - in San Antonio as treasurer and professor in September 1962. He later served as associate director in the college level seminary formation program at St. Edward's University, Austin, Texas. His many ministries included: parochial vicar in the following Texas parishes; Immaculate Heart of Mary, Harlingen; Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Brownsville; St. Patrick's, Houston; and, as pastor, in St. Ignatius, Ranchito; Sacred Heart, McAllen; St. John the Baptist, San Juan; and, St. Ann, Colorado City. He also served as associate director of Nuestra Señora de San Juan del Valle Shrine, San Juan; and parochial vicar, St. Louis of France Cathedral, New Orleans, LA. In June of 2000, he was assigned and remained until his death, as parochial vicar at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and Shrine, Midland, Texas. He also served as a local Oblate Superior in several Texas Districts. In his ministry in the field of canon law, Father Ray served as an official of the Matrimonial Tribunal of the dioceses of Brownsville, San Antonio, San Angelo and most recently as Defender of the Bond for the Texas Appellate Court in San Antonio. Father Ray is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Alma Wilhelm; his uncles, J.P. Wilhelm, Edwin Wilhelm, E.V. Tumlinson; and his aunt, Maggie Schlein. He is survived by his sister, Mary Oswald; and brother-in-law, Louis Oswald of Houston, Texas; his three nephews, Brent A. Oswald, of Houston, Kelly V. and Stacey Oswald of Houston, Louis A. and Crystal Oswald of Littleton, Colo. Mr. Flores was born in Meyersville, Texas on February 10, 1925, and raised in Cuero, Texas. He served his country with the US Army during World War II in the 101st Infantry (Marksmen Rifle and Infantry Combat Badge) as a Corporal. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge (Rhineland, Germany) and awarded the Purple Heart, WW II Victory Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal. He was the founder of the Warriors Nest and the Ram's Nest hamburger stands. He was preceded in death by his parents; Leondro and Elvira Flores; his wife, Adelina "Dela" Flores; his son, Rudolph "Rudy" Sanchez Sr.; and three sisters, Catlida Vasquez, Celidina Basquez and Ofelia Garcia. JEAN BRADY FOX Jean Brady Fox, mother and grandmother, born August 27, 1923, personally met Jesus Christ on July 7, 2006, at the age of 82. Her daughter, Susan, Brownsville; and son David (Julie), Austin; and granddaughter Susan Jean survive her. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse; parents, Edward F. and Gladys S. Brady; brothers Edward F. Brady Jr. and Tommy Brady. She is also survived by a cousin, Ann (Buster) Stevenson, Brownsville, and several nieces and nephews. Jean's first love was Jesus Christ, and she did all things to serve him. She was a devout Christian and a member of First Christian Church in San Benito for 72 years. Jean married Jesse Fox, the star quarterback for the 1941 San Benito Greyhounds district champion football team and a longtime businessman in San Benito. Jean graduated from San Benito High School in 1940 and attended Stephens College, Columbia, Missouri, and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1945 with a Bachelor of Business Administration. She worked at the family-owned San Benito Theater Company with theaters in San Benito, La Feria and Brownsville and also assisted her husband in their many retail and rental businesses. In 1964, Jean returned to school at Pan American University, Edinburg, to earn a teaching certificate. This would afford her the opportunity to begin her primary passion: teaching. Jean taught in the San Benito CISD for 20 years including La Encantada and Fred Booth Elementary Schools. Upon her retirement from public school teaching in 1984, Jean pursued her other teaching interests, Weight Watchers, volunteer reading teacher at a private school, library work, painting, needlepoint, silk ribbon embroidery, etc. Teaching was Jean's life, and she was never without a story or topic to teach about. Her love of history, especially family history, antiques, glass bottles, needlework tools and textiles, travel, documentary television viewing, kept her mind active until the end. One of her greatest joys was teaching and learning from other people. Jean was a member of Chapter CW PEO Sisterhood, the Rio Grande Valley Embroidery Guild and the Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild. He was born on September 12, 1926, in Donna, Texas, and grew up in Mission, Texas. He was one of 10 children born to Eutimio and Genoveva Longoria. As a child, Ramiro loved running through the city's citrus groves and swimming with his friends. He was an exceptional athlete. In high school, he played tennis and ran track, but his real love was playing football. He was the quarterback of the Mission Eagles in the early '40s and later became an avid golfer. After graduating from high school, Ramiro joined the Army during World War II and was stationed in the Philippines. Upon returning from the war, Ramiro used the GI Bill to attend college and graduated from Gradwall School of Medical Technology in St. Louis, Missouri. He later received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Pan American University. Ramiro started working at a very young age, first shining shoes on the city streets of Mission, Texas, and later working as a golf caddie at the city golf course, where he learned to love the game of golf. After graduation from laboratory technology school he worked at a hospital in Sulfur, Oklahoma, where he met and married Johnelle Calame, who was a registered nurse. They moved back to the Valley, and Ramiro spent the majority of his career working at the Serafy Lab and Valley Regional Hospital in Brownsville, Texas. He also spent time as the director of the state lab in San Benito, Texas. Ramiro is survived by his wife of 53 years, Johnelle Longoria; his three loving daughters, Yolanda Swanson, Dr. Elena Marin (Carlos) and Carmen de la Llata (Julio). He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Kyle Swanson, Leslie Quinn, Julio Andres de la Llata, Diego de la Llata, Diana de la Llata, Tomas Marin and Rebecca Marin; and two great-grandchildren, Kyle and Kaleb Quinn. Guadalupe "Lupe" Limas (Retired), 80, of Brownsville went to be with the Lord on July 4, 2006, at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville, Texas. Lt. Limas was born in Rio Hondo, Texas, on December 12, 1925. He served his country with the U.S. Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1945. He began his law enforcement career in 1952 with Harlingen Police Department. Subsequently, he moved to Brownsville where he joined Brownsville P.D. in 1955 until his retirement in 1989. Later, he was appointed as the liaison officer for Cameron County Sheriff's Department under Sheriff Alex Perez where he served with distinction for five years. He was a proud and founding member of the Silver Badges, a social organization for retired/former law enforcement officers. He is preceded in death by his parents, Flaviano and Cecilia Limas; a brother, Fernando Limas; a son, Jesus Manuel Limas; granddaughter Patricia Viscaino; and great granddaughter, Maria del Socorro Garza. Zepeda, 96, of Brownsville entered into her eternal rest on Monday, July 3, 2006, at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Brownsville. She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, Maximo and Esmerejilda Garcia; her husband of 63 years, Luis G. Zepeda; and two brothers, Maximo Garcia and Eugenio Garcia; two sisters, Cesaria G. Cavazos and Dolores G. Casas; and a beloved granddaughter, Christine Zepeda-Ramirez. Survivors include her three daughters, Irma Zepeda, Corina (Carlos) Hernandez and Maria Isabel (Oscar) Lopez; three sons, Abdon (Gracie) Zepeda, Luis Carlos (Romula) Zepeda and Alberto (Carmen) Zepeda, all of Brownsville; 12 grandchildren, Irene (Robert) Avila, Luis Carlos Jr. (Brenda) Zepeda, Ana Isabel Z. (Joseph) Rodríguez, Albert Ray (Elizabeth) Zepeda, Cynthia (Juan Carlos) Vega, Vianae Zepeda, Eloy Ricardo (Kimberly) Zepeda, Laura Ann (Lauro) Pena, Jaime Adrian Zepeda, Celina Ann Hernandez and Amanda Hernandez; and 15 great-grandchildren, Robert Jr., Andrea Nicole, Luis Carlos III, Javier Tomas, Julissa Ann, Jonathan Ivan, Jacob Alexander, Juliet Elizabeth, Alejandra Isabel, Jaden Anthony, Alexander Bryan, Sophia Lauren, Sophie, Chloe and Ayali. Visitation will be held today, Thursday, July 6, 2006, from noon to 6:30 p.m. with a holy rosary commencing at 7 p.m. at Treviño Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 7, 2006, at Immaculate Conception Cathedral. Interment will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park. LIDIA HERNANDEZ RIOS Lidia Hernandez Rios, 76, passed away on Tuesday, July 4, 2006, at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Brownsville surrounded by her family. Lidia was born on April 7, 1930, in Oden, Texas; she had been a lifetime resident of Brownsville and a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Pedro Rios Jr. in 1997. She is survived by her beloved husband of 53 years of blessed marriage, Pedro Rios Sr.; a son, Reynaldo (Olga) Rios; three daughters, Maria R. (Jose A.) Selvera, Olivia R. (Maximo) Ortiz and Alma R. (Geronimo) Castillo; 13 grandchildren, Alberto, Osiel, Christian, Freddy, Liliana, Nancy, Yomara Iris, Cynthia, Denis, Pedro Jr., Ivan and Tiffany; seven great-grandchildren, Pedrito, Gorgito, Giovani, Alberto, Yadira, Yaneli and Chris; she is also survived by numerous brothers and sisters. Albert B. Walker Jr. age 77 of Port O'Connor, Texas, passed away, Sunday, July 2, 2006. He was born July 11, 1928, in Thornton, Texas, to the late Albert B. Walker Sr. and Estelle Lenamond Meisch. He is survived by his children, Diana Duval and husband Russell Duval Jr. of Brazoria, Texas, Patricia Jo Walker of Clute, Texas, Douglas Albert Walker and wife Mary Jo Walker of Port O'Connor and David George Walker and wife Dawn Walker of Rockport; grandchildren Heather Kay of Willis, Texas, Shelly Worrell of Pearland, Texas, Douglas Walker Jr. and Devon Walker, both of Port O'Connor, Brandon Emerson of Prospect, Va., Kayla Walker and David Walker, both of Rockport; great-grandchildren Jaiden Kay and Camden Kay of Willis, Texas, and Jacob Worrell of Pearland, Texas; his siblings, Jacque Williams of Brownsville, Texas, Carolyn Gardner of Jasper, Alabama, Merilyn Wall of La Porte, Texas, and Richard Walker of Brownsville, Texas. Mr. Walker is preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Walker; sisters Kathy Walker and Gwen Walker; and brother Edward Walker. Albert will be greatly missed by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He touched the lives of many people throughout his journey in life. At a very young age, he joined the Merchant Marines and traveled around the world. He then returned to Brownsville where he was a member of the Longshoreman Association, later becoming the president. After several years working on the docks, he decided to open his own business which was Walker's Bait and Tackle. Being an avid fisherman, he knew his endeavor would be successful. When he decided to retire he made his home in Port O'Connor, Texas. Mr. Walker will be laid to rest at the Seadrift Cemetery following a private service for his children and family. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Emilia C. Alvarez; his children, Regina Alvarez, Humberto Alvarez, Hilda A. (Raul) Hernandez, Ildefonso (Natalia) Alvarez, and Pete (Mary) Alvarez; together with 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
