I am thinking it might narrow down your search a bit to an area anyhow. My gg grandmother was Margaret Amanda Coon Norred. She married James Oliver Norred in 1866 on Hairston Creek near the old Hairston Creek Community. Now the Coons lived next door to the Norreds and John Adams Coon deeded some property to "the coon family salve" sometime after 1853. That is to say the Coons arrived in Burnet County on or before 1850 and purchased land 17 Dec 1853. Some of this is said to have been slave land or he later deeded it to some slaves, I don't know for fact. There is one tattered, type written note that mentions "At one time there was a colored family who were descendants of the Coon family salve". A lot of this is verbal between family relations and cousins whom I have talked with about it. Now I also found his name from a tribute to George Cullen Arnett by a friend at his death. George married the youngest of the Coon children, Francis Coon, My gg grandmothers youngest sister and the friend writes of how George on a visit to Burnet in the middle 18! 90's went to visit the old Coon slave "Ike Coon" who was ill and living in his hut on the old ranch deeded to him. he had tried to get the old man to move to Lubbock and live with him and his wife but ole Ike Coon wanted to stay where he was. They say he and John Coon were raised together in South Carolina I believe it was and Ike was the son of one of Johns Fathers slaves. I don't have any records of him ever marring but you know how records are on slaves. This would have been somewhere between the Hairston Creek Community and Oatmeal. I believe John Adams Coon deeded some property for a school in Hairston Creek. I hope this is of some help and I will see what else I can dig up as I research the Coon, Norred, Hibler, Newton, Biggs, and Debo relations to name a few I have in Burnet and surrounding counties. Feel free to contact me at any time. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
