Clapp and his daughter Lauretta marrying William E. Burnet. I just came across this in a September 8, 1874 issue of the Atlanta Weekly Constitution. The Lauretta in question is the notorious Loreta Janeta Velasquez, author of THE WOMAN IN BATTLE, a highly fictionalized account of her supposedly posing as a man in CSA uniform in the Civil War. I am trying to track down reliable info on her early life. Was there, in fact, a Samuel S. Clapp with a daughter named Lauretta or something like that? She in 1874 says she was born in Havana, but the family moved to Mississippi, then Texas, and her father died in 1863 at Fort Hamilton, NY, as a Union POW. Would love to learn if there is anything at all to this. WCDavis Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
