I have been going over the research papers on the Newton's by my great aunt and updating my tree over the past two evenings. I am trying to see where the connection to the Newton's of the area might be to your Mrs Martha Ann Newton. I feel the Newton's in question are of my linage but I don't think it was of the line of Samuel Martin which is mine. At least not that I can see for the moment. Samuel was the son of Rev. Thomas Newton and had 6 brothers and 3 sisters. There was possibly one more boy but I haven't confirmed it yet. I am still looking into where they all migrated to. Interestingly enough Samuel and family migrated to Arkansas from Mississippi prior to coming to Texas and lived in Fannin and Grayson counties before settling in Burnet county. So there is the possible Arkansas connection for your Martha Ann. Perhaps Samuel went to Arkansas to meet with family members there, don't know as of yet. Anyhow I have time over the weekend to do some digging and in the mean time if you could get me more information on the following. You mentioned a 1870 Bastrop census record. What information does it contain? Is she shown living alone or with a family? What is her calculated age shown as? The J W and Mattie Newton and the land. There was a Joseph Pickens Newton but I haven't found a "J W" Newton that matches yet. The Mattie person rings a bell in away. I find it odd that this J W Newton would have spent his wife's inheritance as almost all of the Newtons were ministers or tied to a church in some way. On the other hand you find black sheep in every family line. As to the "Mrs" on the marriage record, that is interesting as I haven't seen that before. The Mrs would indicate she was still married but could indicate widowed. Does it show her age? More to follow ... James Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
