On the 1870 census she is living with Thomas and 9 children ranging in age from 26 to 7. She is 46 and I think this is what we base her age and birth year on as 1824 as well as being born in Arkansas. You know how these censuses can be all over the place regarding reliability, but it's a reference. Regarding the John W and Mattie Newton...I cannot recall where I read that account or find it to save my life. I thought I'd read it on the deed, but not so. Perhaps I looked at a family tree, but I'm just not sure. I think the bent of wherever I read that is they must have had to live on that money....he left the sweetest message to her on the deed, so he must have held her in the highest regard. That "Mrs." has bugged us for years. It does not give her age, but the preacher who married them was DK Stewart. I'm stumped as to whether I need to look for a deceased Newton male who might have married her, or whether she is the Newton and just used the Mrs to indicate she was widowed and using her maiden name.
