STEWART, though not directly. His mother was the sister of my 3rd gr-grandfather, Jefferson COPELAND. Also, two of his siblings married into my direct PERRY family line in Burnet/Williamson Counties. Your query led me to do a bit more research but with no luck. I had never heard the story you related on how John died. Please keep me posted if you find out any further info. I will do the same. It probably won't produce further info. on John's death/burial, but I did order his widow's Confederate Pension application from the Texas Archives. I find it very interesting that John married a lady who had been living in Cooke County before they married (she is living in Cooke County within the 1860 census). Marriage records indicate they married in 1861 in Burnet County. I guess once the war ended they moved back to Cooke County. I'm very curious as to how they met, living so far away from each other. There are hundreds of miles difference between Burnet/Williamson Counties and Cooke County. Another odd thing is that John was living in Cooke County when going to hunt for an escapee from the Williamson County jail? Do you have the name of the escapee they were hunting? Was he the one who fatally injured John Stewart? Was the escapee ever captured? Was John injured in Cooke County? Again, the oddest thing to me is that John (former Williamson County resident) was hunting for a Williamson County escapee from faraway Cooke County. Please share any further clues if you have them. I'll see what I can find as well. Lisa Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. On 15 May 1872, Texas State Police Private John A. STEWART, Captain John M. Redmon and five Chickasaw Indians left Cooke County arrest an escapee from Williamson County jail who was wanted for murder. STEWART was wounded and died on 16 May 1872. He was an Odd Fellow and the newspaper account indicates he was buried in Cooke County but unable to locate his place of burial. He was married to Ellen Jane A. Burford's Regiment (19th Texas Cavalry) during the Civil War. The 1860 US Census for Williamson County reports: John A Stewart, age 20, born about 1840 in Tennessee, living with his parents, John G. Stewart, 49, Margt Stewart, 49, and siblings Benjmain Stewart, 17, William T. Stewart, 14, and Samuel R. Stewart, 12. The 1870 US Census for Cooke County reports: John A. Stewart, 29, born about 1841 in Tennessee, living with Arminta E. Stewart, 39, and two children, Helen M. Stewart, 8, and Edward M. Stewart, 2. The 1880 US Census for Cooke County reports: Alminta Stewart, age 49, born about 1831 in Tennessee, widowed, keeping house, and living with her daughter, May Stewart, 18. Nellie was a teacher in an "Indian" or Native American school in AZ when they met. Their other children were named Kathleen, b. abt. 1918 (married Richard Murphy); Kenneth Harwell, b. abt. 1923, d. abt. 1994/96 in CA (wife's name was Josephine aka Jo); Seaborn, b. abt. 1925 died at about 10 years of age from Meningitis. He married #2) Helen Dorthea Zehr... they later divorced. One child from that marriage, Susan, born in CA... she is still living. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. My connection is via marriage to son of Helen Margurite Harwell and husband Robert Waldeen Gillies via son Robert Douglas Gillies (my ex). Thank you for any help you can offer. Included among the Davidson family was WILLIAM DAVIDSON, age 60 from VA, listed as a gentleman. Many of these Davidsons eventually moved to the Valley Spring area of Llano Co., where quite a few of them are buried in the Valley Spring Cemetery. Among these was Josephine Davidson, who married Evans Coulter. My brother-in-law is a descendant of this union, and several years ago, I went with him and my sister to locate family graves in area of CROSS PLAINS, TX, where some of the family members ended up. Davidsons in Valley Spring are buried near the entrance to the cemetery, south side. Karylon A.
