Hi Glenna in Burnet Co., I finally found my copies of the Prison Records of William Jefferson "Buff" Stewart. From the records that I have copies of, "Buff" was listed in those Prison records as W. S. Stewart, rather than W. J. Stewart. There is no doubt that this is him, but listed by an incorrect name. His age is listed as being 26 years old and being born in Tenn. That is correct for 'Buff'. His prisoner No. was 2794 and he was listed as being married, uses tobacco, his offense was Attempted Murder, he was convicted during the April Term of Court, 1873, in Burnet Co. His weight was listed as 178 lbs. He was sentenced to four years in prison and was received in Huntsville on September 22, 1873. These records further reflect that he died on August 19, 1873. The records do not reflect his burial location. If he was buried in the Cemetery there at the prison, he probably would have been buried under the name of W. J. Stewart and not William J. Stewart. There is still something about these records that bothers me. The entries by Prison officials indicate that he was received at Huntsville on September 22, 1873. Then he is listed as dying on August 19, 1873. One of those entries cannot be correct. He could not have died there before he arrived. I strongly suspect that he probably died on August 19, 1874 not 1873. I am going to check the records in Burnet Co. to make sure that he was convicted in the Spring Term of 1873 and sent to prison during the fall of 1873. More later when I find any corrections. If you want a copy of these prison records, contact me at my e-mail address: Muddcatman@sbcglobal.net Keith Reed

Glenna 5, I have also been looking for the burial location of "Buff". I have been doing family research on this Stewart/Greer/Clark family group for the better part of 35 years and also been unable to find the burial location of "Buff". I tried several times to get information from the Texas Bureau of Prisons but their response was that their records do not include William Jefferson Stewart. Some time ago I was visiting with a friend of mine who works at the Library where the Archives are stored and he said he would take a look for me. He did find the records relating to "Buff" but his name was not listed as William Jefferson Stewart. At the moment I cannot remember what name was used but it was very close to his name and the records indicated that he was from Burnet Co. and his date of arrival was the correct date. The listing of his name could have been William James Stewart. Those records record his death dte, but do not record his place of burial. At that time records of burials in the State run cemetery for the Huntsville facility were not kept. I would strongly suspect that he was buried there in the Cemetery. Do you know where the nickname "Buff" came from? Here is what I have always been told. When he was a young teen ager, he tried to ride a young buffalo where they lived in the Williamson/Burnet Co. Area. I might add he was unsuccessful in his riding attempt, but the name stuck with him the remainder of his life. It gives his height, color of hair and also when he died in prison. He was charged Dec. 1872 and sent to prison in April 1873. He was killed there in August 1873. I am looking for his place of burial. The prison states they do not have any information but was hoping someone out there just might know where he was buried. Thanks in advance. Margaret Faye Reed was born in Bertram around 1937 and married Lawrence Burl Edrington. They moved to Yuma Arizona and raised a family there. I do not know if Margaret died in 1958 but I found a couple of newspaper articles in the Yuma Daily papers saying she was admitted twice to the hospital in March 1958, and then came across a marriage for Lawrence Burl Edrington to Charlotte Griss in Las Vegas Nevada in 1964. If anyone knows who Margaret's parents were, I would greatly appreciate it. Since there was not a death certificate on file in the state of Arizona, she may have returned to Texas. I am seeking the death date and burial location of Nora (Clark) Perry. Nora Clark was married to William K. Perry in Burnet Co in 1890. Nora was the daughter of Benjamin F. Clark and Martha F. (Donnell) Clark. Benjamin and Martha were married in Williamson Co. and lived there for a while. William K. Perry and his ancestors lived in Williamson Co. for many years. Clark family information relates that Nora died while still a young lady. That information is proved by the fact that when the 1900 census was taken, William K. Perry had married for a second time and had a child about 4 years old. William had married Sarah J. Green and lived in McLennan Co. when that census was taken. Would appreciate any information concerning Nora and her relatively short life. Keith Reed Arlington, Tx.

I posted my query regarding Bakers in Burnet County about four years ago. I was very pleased to hear that you are a descendant of Samuel Hatcher Baker. I have a particular interest in him, partly because of his given names which I believe honor his great grandfather Samuel Baker of Weakly County, Tennessee who was a state representative during the Civil War AND his great grandaunt Anna Baker Hatcher who died in a cholera epidemic in Tennessee along with her husband Eli in 1830. In the four years since my post I have learned a great deal about the Bakers in Burnet County and those in other locations. I now have a website devoted to the descendants of Basil Baker of Bedford County, VA. Some of those descendants would include your ancestors. If you would be interested in joining my website, just email me at carroljohnson1@netscape.net indicating your interest and I will send you a user name and password so that you may access the secure site. I would be delighted to have you on the site where you can read about and view photos of Bakers, both living and deceased. You can also interact with living Bakers and Baker descendants. It's quite a story. There are some famous Bakers in our line; a state representative, a state senator and a U.S. Marshal.
