Author: SteveRossignol Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.texas.counties.burnet/2714.1.1.1.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dear Jean-- Good hearing from you. I believe I ran into you at the Texas State Archives and Genealogy a couple of years ago and you were quite helpful then. Thanks for the continuing info on Elizabeth Simpson. I am pretty much convinced that the legends of her being a "witch" are pretty much urban folklore, and pretty recent folklore at that, brought on by the spooky insciption on her headstone. There may have been hangings outside the cemetery, but this would not have been incidental to anything concerning Elizabeth Simspon, I don't believe. I also have similar dates for Elizabeth Simpson and Elizabeth Spencer, which is odd. But Vol 1 of Williamson County Cemeteries (in the Scheyli Cemetery) show them as two different people. Somewhere I think that there was an error in transcription. There are also 2 different graves at the cemetery. Anyway, I will send you all I have here in a moment, Please feel free to share. I am trying to figure out how to post this as attachments to the Gen Web site. And, of course, if you come up with anything new, I would love to hear from you. Thanks Steve Rossignol Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: JeanShroyer65 Surnames: Bittick, Stewart, Jones, King, Varan, Faubion, Ashabranner, Shepherd, Shroyer Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.texas.counties.burnet/2714.1.1.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Steve, got a note of request from BCGS member stating your wishing to find info on the Elizabeth Simpson (possibly practicing witchcraft) in Wmsn. Co.,TX area during 1860's period. I have read some of the posts here and do not recall any such stories handed around by folks in the county. Helen Swenson, now dec'd, was related to some of the folks buried in that locale and she would have been some help probably. However, I compiled the History on Wmsn. Co.,TX for our wCGS group in 1982-1985 and remember many pioneer names and sketches sent to me for our book. None of the sketches or names mention the Elizabeth Simpson. However, I checked the listings for Bittick Cemetery on Michael Shepherd's cite he compiled online for Wmsn. Co.,TX Cemeteries (data he used from various sources)and the names listed in that cemetery are few! Bittick, Stewart, King and Jones. There is an Elizabeth Stewart buried in Bittick Cemetery with similar dates for the lady you call Elizabeth Bittick. There again as you state. If she had been a slave, it is doubtful she was buried in a White cemetery during that time remembering that our Round Rock (old RR Cem. ) on Sam Bass Rd. had years prior the early pioneers buried in the main cemetery (white families) and next to this section, slave cemetery. I resided in 1980's in Round Rock on Sam Bass Rd. and worked on the History for 2 1/2 yrs. and knew about some of the county names. Clara Scarbrough just past away not long ago. Mr. Asabraner, and others who sat on Historical Commission Board in 1980's probably could have been of help on this topic. However, they have all gone before us now! Laverne Faubion, once Pres. of Historical Commission is passed on too and I am not sure about Mrs. Irene Varan, a friend and former Pres. of the Hist. Commission and our WCGS too at one time may be still residing in Cedar Park, TX, but not sure if Irene is in the best of health today. She may have some idea of the story! I wanted to state in the cemetery listing for Bittick Cemetery there is an Elizabeth Stewart who was born 10 APR 1831 and died 21 SEP 1861. These are close dates to your Elizabeth Simpson you mentioned. You state Elizabeth Simpson was born 10 APR 1834 and died 24 SEP 1864. Are we possibly speaking of the same lady buried in Bittick Cemetery? In 1980's my friend and I worked on cemeteries for the Hist. Commsn. and printed them in our WCGS quarterly publications with permission. The earlier cemeteries in the Cedar Park/Leander/Jollyville area were already surveyed/documented in Vols. 1 and II of the Cemetery books. Carol and I worked on Vol. III of the cemetery books for the commission at the time. I also have worked on Travis Co.,TX Cemeteries that AGS began in 1999 and I left the project in 2004! If I can help please email me at TxJean@aol.com (Jean Shroyer)lookups for Travis and Wmsn. Co.TX. Also have you searched the obits, newspapers for any accounting of the incident involving Elizabeth's theft of horses or such events? Criminal court minutes in county Courthouse in Georgetown for 1860's? Not sure the Round Rock Leader has any newspapers this early but the Sun Newspaper may report some stories and horse stealings. Hope to help. Thanks Jean Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It was Andy's family who was in Burnet Co., and Caroline moved there with him. Caroline Cottle Woods is the daughter of Norman B. Woods & Jane Boyd Wells, and they were all from Fayette and DeWitt Counties, originally from Missouri. Caroline's brothers who would have been Woods are Martin and Henry, and her Woods uncles are Montraville (m. Isabel), Leander (d. unmarried) and Gonzalvo (Gon) (who married Jane after Norman's death). I don't know of any of the Woods men who ended up in Burnet Co. but it's posible. I show Alexander "Zan" as bring born 9 Feb 1835 in Prebble County, Ohio, and died 2 Jul 1922 in Burnet, Burnet Co., Texas. I believe he and Sarah Jane are both buried in the Fisher/Fry Cemetery there. According to the information I have found, their children were John C. (1858-1859, also buried in Fry Cemetery), Robert A. (1859-1881), Mary Cathrine (1862-1948), Lucy Eulalia (1865-1887), Samuel Alexander (1867-1934), Thomas Edward (1869-1965), Peter Lindsey (1872-1930), Frank (1875-1945), and William Orien "Bill" (1878-1950). I have his father listed as Richard, born in 1800 in Ohio. No mother, and no other siblings. I'm hoping to be able to dig around in Ohio a little and find more, as this is the origin of the Fisher name for my family. Of course, I have plenty of information going forward! :) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: SteveRossignol Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.texas.counties.burnet/2714.1.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dear ksmhorton2861-- I would be more than happy to send you the information I have, as well as to any member on th list who is interested. I have the photo of the headstone, a couple of newspaper articles and maybe an odd or end. The inscription itself reads: "Elizebeth Simpson was borne April the 10 1834 and dide September the 24 1864 An remember as yo ar pasing by Yo must dy as well as I" I suspect that it is the "spooky" tone of the insciption which has lead Elizabeth to be branded as a "witch", but similar insciptions is not that uncommon and are found in many other locations. The hand carved nature of the inscription might also lend to the "witch" theory. But, based on some research with help from several folks, I can determine that, contrary to my original theory, Elizabeth Simpson was NOT an escaping slave (in fact, she was white), she was NOT hung for horse thievery or witchcraft (this may have started because of the hanging tree just outside the Bittick Cemetery), and she probably was not a Unionist. I will email you those items here shortly if I can access your email, but please confirm that you (or anyone else so interested) would like to receive this stuff.
