Though I wasn't familiar with the practice of giving tokens such as yours, she was, and knew of your organization. She apparently has a couple of tokens from the old days in Burnet. The oral history was a fortuitous find! I bet it is really interesting. I helped a smidgen with a couple of WWII oral histories spearheaded by Joann... the oral histories are treasures. I don't mind sharing quotes from my little "story" but if you do use any and have any edits, please let me approve the edits first. Your article will really be interesting with all the research and great source material you've found. Can't wait to read it. My dad always called it the Bertram General Store we always went by there before and or after visiting the cemetery or a relation that lived just North of there. I feel like a little piece of America went away with that stores closing. Speaking of the relation North of there. You might know something of this Teresa. I don't remember exactly where it is because I was very young the last time I was there but it is a small stone house built of native stone. I am not sure if the relative was a Norred, Hibler, Newton, or Burns but the unique thing about the house was on the right side of the front door about knee high was a stone club made into the wall. My father when he was going the U of T in the late 40's brought one of his buddies from the geology dept out on a deer hunt who said it was man made. He sent pictures to different departments at school and it was determined it was native American in origin. Now my g grandfather had a place just north of Bertram called "poor ridge" but it also could have been the place his widow Nelle May Newton Norred built after his death in 1897. It seem like it was about 2 or 3 miles past the cemetery and off to the left. Best I remember you cross a creek and the road-drivew! ay was right after it. Seems like we had to drive through a creek bottom just before you get to the house. I sure would like to find that place again and get some pictures. If it is even still there. I plan to make a trip to Burnet late spring or summer and do some serious boots on the ground research. I have a little girl who is disabled so travel can be difficult. I plan to visit with the folks with the TexGenWeb site as I told Jo Ann I would volunteer some time to that project. I will sent you an message Teresa when I will be in town and perhaps we can meet. I plan to get a lot of pictures and make notes, perhaps you can fill in a few blanks for me. My grandfather was supposed to have had a mechanics shop in Burnet before he moved down to Taft, Texas. I sure would like to find out more about that. His name was James Calvin Norred perhaps your family has heard of it or knew of him. Nick those pictures you emailed me, did you take those? Was wondering how recent they were. Wow just from what I can see in them Bertram has changed a lot. The token thing is killing me now as I remember seeing a cigar box of those things at some relatives house some time back in time. I have a contact that collects state fair ribbons and such. Interesting story's behind those things. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My interest in the store began in September when I chanced to acquire a "good for" from McGill's - probably dating to about 1920. I'll attach a scan. I've been a token hound for many years, and the ones that thrill me the most are the ones that I can research in terms of details, locations, history, photos... Well, seems this particular token has unearthed an absolute treasure trove of Texas history...enough to warrant my writing it up and submitting it to the Token and Medal Society as a permanent record. I was able to find a number of photos online, as well as two articles, and of course your own posting. Between Google and the Internet, we are living in high times! The best of the articles includes some super old photos and is posted online - from the Burnet Bulletin, 1993, as the store was closing: http://bnb.stparchive.com/Archive/BNB/BNB11181993P11.php I stopped by the store last time I was on my way from Dallas to Austin. I took a number of pictures that will be included with the article. As way has led to way, I have also found considerable information and photos about David Cleveland Reed, who of course built the building in 1905, then took Archibald Brown McGill (his brother-in-law) on as a partner in 1912, and then moved to Austin in 1914. He owned the famous mansion now called the Byrne-Reed House, which has extensive material online. There was also a lawsuit following his tragic death in a plane crash in 1948 - the insurance company refused to pay their double accident coverage because aeronautical activities were specifically excluded (that is, they paid but not double). I was all set to consider my article finished when I chanced upon pure gold: in 1984, an oral history was made with Ada Reed and Bob Brewer, who of course ran the store from 1939-91. I couldn't possibly submit my article till I read that, so I ordered a copy just today from the University of North Texas Oral History Program. I think it costs $15 and runs about 100 pages! How truly wonderful that someone had the foresight to record what these amazing people must have had to share! I can't wait to read it. But mostly I wanted to connect with you to ask your permission to quote your wonderful, colorful, and personal account that you posted here at Ancestry.com. Would that be okay - with just a few minor edits? All best to you! Author: james_norred Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.texas.counties.burnet/2739.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Now this is cool! Howdy Nick. Thanks for finding this jewel. Let me introduce myself. James C Norred I remember that store and even more so now after reading Teresa's piece. Not near as well as she does as I only got to go to Burnet and Bretram on family vacations. We came at least once a year sometimes more to visit with relatives and fish at Buchanan lake. Let me explain my connection and reason for my post. I am the oldest living male descendant of George Cullen Norred, son Of James Oliver Norred. James Oliver came to Burnett county sometime between 1845 and before the 1850 census where he is found in the household of Cullen Curlee Arnett, his stepfather at age 17. I believe this was Milam county but would have to check to be sure. He shows up on the 1860 census still with the Arnetts in Burnet county and marries Margaret Amanda Coon in 1861. George Cullen married Nelle May Newton in 1891 and had three children. Lena May (One of my very favorite aunts), Georgia, and James Calvin Norred, my grandfather. George Cullen died one year later in 1897. Nelle may moved to Bertram, built a home (still trying to find out where)and tried to operate a "millinery shop" (not sure exactly what that is) form her home. She didn't seem to have any success and remarried Baxter Euens Burns about 1904. They had one child Minnie Jewel Burns who later married Eppa Debo. Hence my Uncle Eppa and Aunt Jewel and their little ranch just north of Burnet, as the crow flies. This is usually where we stayed when we visited. My aunt Lena moved into a small trailer on the ranch after selling her house in Burnet because of health reasons. My aunt Lena was the family historian and she started her research back in the 1950's and continued until her death in 1969. I used to sit and listen to her tell the family stories for hours in the evenings after supper sitting on aunt jewels and uncle Eppa's back porch. Like Teresa mentioned in her story about how she wished she had those broaches today, I wish I had written down some of those stories. Hind sight is 20/20 right? I have inherited that research or whats left of it after being passed to and fro among different relations over the years. it is mostly from these documents come the story I have been telling you. Now that I have battered you with exposition let me get to my purpose. I do tend to be verbose (run off at the mouth or keyboard). Lena not only got all the ole dry, boring, and dusty dates and documents but told a story about each one of these people that she knew or knew of from stories told to her. This is like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for someone doing family research. The mother load like a long lost family bible! I am trying to do the same thing as I document my linage. My grandfather James Calvin married Annie Alice Hibler, daughter of Felix Hibler. We have the Hibler book and their is some rich material there but a tad "clinical?" in some places. I would like to ask that if you do publish an article on this store and Bertram I would love to be able to use some of it in my tree. I want to include as much about Bertram and Burnet as well as the county so that when someone someday reads about the times and places I document, I can put them there like Teresa did with her story. I visited that store many times in the late 50's and 60's. Think the last time was when we burred my aunt Lena in Bear Creek Cemetery in 1969. Half my family is burred there. Teresa Nyquist Tucker The Nyquist almost sounds familiar. But you can't hardly scratch the dirt around there without bumping into one of my relatives. Anyhow Teresa if you reply I would love to quote that wonderful story in my tree with you as the author of course. Thank you so much for that trip down memory lane. James C. James Oliver Norred was the stepson of Cullen Curlee Arnett who married his mother (Elizabeth Warren Norred Arnett) in 1834, Carthage, Leake County, Mississippi after James Oliver's father, Issac Oliver Norred was killed in 1833 Leake County, Mississippi. C C Arnett was the first Sheriff of Carthage in 1834. They migrated to Burnet sometime before the 1850 census where they are in Milam County, Texas then 1860 census puts them in Burnet County, Texas. James Oliver Married Margaret Amanda Coon in 1861. George Married Nelle May Newton, daughter of John Calvin Newton, in 1891. They had three children, Lean May, Georgie (female), and my grandfather James Calvin Norred. George Cullen died in 1897 and Nelle May remarried Baxter Euen Burns in 1900. They had one daughter, Minnie Jewel Burns. Minnie J Burns married Eppa Debo 1919. I knew these people well. My uncle Eppa and aunt Jewel, and aunt Lena were among my favorite people in the world. As a young man I spent a lot of time with them on their little ranch just outside Burnet, Texas in the 50's and 60's. My aunt Lena used to live in town but later because of her health she moved into a small trailer next to the ranch house. Lena was the family historian and researched the family history starting back in the 1950's until her death in 1969. We used to set around at night and she would tell family stories. hind sight is 20/20 they say .. wish had written some of this stuff down .. Right? I do miss her. Lena and Jewel were both the image of a pioneer woman. In their Sunday best with a bonnet on you could just see the covered wagons in the background. My brother and I used to sleep on the screen! ed in back porch of this typical old "T" shaped ranch house. If something made a noise in the night aunt Jewel was out the door in a flash with her trusty .410 pump in hand and "Tippy" her trusty OLD Border Collie (I swear that dog was as old as she was .. maybe older) on her heels. Sooner or later you heard Tippy barking, a shot or two and you knew what ever had annoyed her had gone to meet it's maker. James Calvin Norred, my grandfather, married Annie Alice Hibler, daughter of Felix Hibler. We have a copy of the Hibler book too if anyone needs reference on that linage. James Calvin's son James Clifford Norred was my father. I do carry on! Anyhow anyone interested in trading notes and resources on the above mentioned families please contact me. i inherited my aunt Lena's papers and have a lot of information especially on the Newtons and Picketts. Many of the Arnetts and Coons are covered. In many cases she has stories about the life of a lot of these people as she knew them or their descendants. Ed, I do not know which Roundtree you are researching. I have a bit of information. I have a copy of the election results of a Burnet Co. election conducted on August 7, 1854. At that election, James L. Roundtree was elected as Justice of the Peace, Preceinct # 2. I would be happy to get you a copy of this document if this is your Roundtree family.
