Some of them required help from the county governments. "Confederate Indigent Lists" or censuses were kept by a number of counties. I'm not sure of the date of these lists, probably about 1863. I have a relative listed here as serving in State Troops. In another document, he says that he "joined a regiment of state troops which was made up in Burleson County. We were in Moran's Batalion." He gives as a date, August 1863. Later, he writes, "I was elected County Commissioner. I had charge of collecting tithes for the widows and orphans until after the war." I hope this helps.
