The spelling of Somerville was my mistake. Years ago in interviewing an elderly relative, it was stated Summerville, when I looked on the road map even with my maginifier I could not make out the spelling. Since I got the information from more than one elderly relative about the murder of Albert Gowen I assume the "News" came out of Somerville. I live in St. Louis,Mo. so I never get to TX. I would very much appreciate any help or suggestions to verify this story. The time frame is 1863 (birth year of the last child of Nancy and Albert) to 1870 where Nancy appears with children in the Wayne Co.,Mo. Census. There is one other story that may have a connection to this, and that is Albert and Nancy had a son called Washburn who was supposedly killed in the Civil War, I haven't been able to get any records from the National Archives on him as a Union Soilder, so as many others from the county he may have been a southern sympathizer. In the 1850 Census he is listed as George W.. It may be his father came to collect him or his belongings??? There are no burial sites in Wayne Co. for either of them. Also I've never located Albert and Nancy in any Mo. 1860 Census so they may have been in Tx. Thanks again it's nice people like you that make this so much fun. Karlyn May

Perhaps If you were to look in newspaper archives, etc. with the correct city if this is the right one then you might locate something. If this helps email me, as I might not find my way back to this site to check messages, I live in Burleson co. and perhaps I could look into this further. Sincerely, Jo Bostic

Surnames: REED/GOWEN Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EhB.2ACE/1125 Message Board Post: Desperately Need Help: I have two stories of ancestors: One is reported to have been published in Wayne Co.,Mo. newspaper as follows: THOMAS H. REED was shot in TX., on his death bed, August 6, 1874 her admitted to having been the leader of the gang that robbed the Iron Mountian train at Gads Hill in Wayne Co., Mo., thus absolving the Jesse James gang of the blame. This article was published about August or Sept. 1874. (The elder family members said he died in Summerville, Tx. The other family legend is as follows: (two different versions) ALBERT D. GOWEN (Gowan, Gowin) was returning from TX., where he was an heir to an estate. He was ambushed and killed having left a widow Nancy (nee Reed) and several small children back in Wayne Co.,Mo. The second version is as follows: ALBERT D. GOWEN went to the Panhandle of TX. to receive his portion of an estate, upon his return, he was ambushed and killed, his wife Nancy (nee Reed) packed up their children and returned to Mo. I have no idea where in Tx. either of these accounts may have occured, however, the time frame is 1863-1870. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated after years of trying to locate any leads I'm drained! Thanking anyone in advance even for a prayer, Karlyn May

I just checked my files, but I can't seem to find my info at the moment. But by what I had, I determined that Hugh Brevard King was probably not connected to me. I think Hugh Brevard had lived in Lauderdale Co., Alabama at one time before migrating to Texas. My King line wa in Lauderdale Co. about the same time and I was just trying to make a connection because of that. It is difficult for me to really find anything out, as I don't know the name of my King ancestor that migrated to Lauderdale Co., but it could have been James M. King who is in the 1840 Lauderdale Co., AL. census--no proof at all--his household in 1840 closely matches the household of my 3rd great grandmother Catherine King in 1850 Lauderdale Co., AL. Census. Her maiden name is unknown and her husband is unknown. Whether this James M. King is her husband or not, I just don't know. I was just trying to find out if there was a James M. King born 1790-1800 NC in Hugh Brevard King's lines (direct or indirect)anywhere. Thanks for responding. Judy Sanders

    2. Linda Preston
    3. I am looking for the Settlemeyers in Burleson County. The earliest Settlemeyer information (not all info is confirmed) I have is: Charley SETTLEMEYER (d. before 1893-1894) m. Anna Marguerite HOYEK (b. 1864) on 18 May 1883 in Burleson County, Texas. Anna married Henry N. NEWCOMB between 1893-1849, presumably after Charley's death. The children of Charley and Anna were Joseph W. (m. Emma CALVIN), Charley, Alice Sophia, Minnie, and Alfred Harding (m. Elfreda SCHEFFEL). One Joseph SETTLEMEYER (age 69 years) is listed in the 1930 Census with his Moravian-born wife Anna (age 67 years) and his 90-year-old father-in-law Frank KUBECKA (immigrated 1873). I have not yet connected this Joseph to Charley, but I believe they must be linked somehow. Any help would be appreciated, and I am happy to share any information I have.
