Nearly a year later, on September 11, 1876, the post office was established with Harris as the postmaster. Four years later the town grew to a sizable trade center for the southwestern section of the county, boasting two general stores, a blacksmith shop, a mill, and a gin in 1881. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Two locations for Indian Creek are: http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.GetDetail?tab=Y&id=1359934 http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.GetDetail?tab=Y&id=1379985 Indian Creek Cemetery is located here: http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.GetDetail?tab=Y&id=1359940 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Here is info about Indian CreeK: HOWARD PAYNE UNIVERSITY Marker #2586 Location: Center Ave. near intersection with Austin Ave. City: Brownwood Marker Erected: 1989 Marker Text: The Pecan Valley Baptist Association was formed by representatives of Baptist congregations in this area in September 1876. Meeting at Indian Creek in June 1889, the association acted on an executive committee resolution calling for the creation of a Baptist college within the organization's boundaries. Brownwood was chosen as the site of the school. The Rev. John David Robnett, first president of the college Board of Trustees, traveled extensively to raise funds for the institution. His brother-in-law, Edward Howard Payne, made a large contribution to the school, which was then named in his honor. Howard Payne College opened its doors on September 16, 1890, the same day the cornerstone was laid for the main school building. Classes were held in Robnett Hall, a building John Robnett had built with plans to provide boarding facilities at the college. Dr. A.J. Emerson served as the school's first president. Over the years the college grew and enrollment increased. Daniel Baker College, a Presbyterian school which opened in Brownwood days before Howard Payne, was incorporated into the Baptist College in 1953. The school was raised to university standing in 1974. The old main building burned in 1984. I am interested in the schools in Indian Creek, near Ebony and Brownwood. I noted on your listing there was a Buffalo Creek School in Indian Creek.....as well as a school listed as Indian Creek. Do you have the original date these schools were established? Are there any records that might indicate the first group to attend classes in these schools and who might have played a major part in seeing that the schools were built? Any information helpful. Sue, I can't do them throughout the "school year". I usually contact the coordinator and volunteer in July and August, with assurances that I be taken off around the end of August. Don't worry, I will contact you this summer! I would be more than happy to transcribe some of the cemeteries. I doubt I could do the whole book. You will have to get permission from the Historical Society though. I am sure they use the sales of the these books as fundraisers.
