Surnames: RATLIFF Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/DhB.2ACE/950 Message Board Post: I was intrigued with the posting concerning the Indian Creek School. My GG Grandfather...Arch Ratliff, was a member of the Ebony Community. My Great Grandparents, Charles I. Welch and Mary Elizabeth Ratliff were in the Indian Creek area...down the road from Ebony. All are buried at Ebony Cemetery. The Ratliff's came to that area in 1874. Charles I. Welch married Mary Elizabeth about 1878. I have a picture of Arch Ratliff, kneeling down with a child , surrounded by other children and adults that are standing... in front of a School..... Family history says it is a school he made possible....and that is is the first school of Ebony. As there seemed to be another Ebony School....so some of the old timers indicate...I was wondering if possibly it could have been another school in the area. Arch was supposedly responsible for building a Church in Williamson County and a school in Young County... Supposedly he was instrumental in building a Methodist Church in Ebony...and I thought perhaps this might be a Church instead of a school..... I don't have any documented facts just family tradition and this picture....so I am on a fishing expedition..... Regardless...I am happy to have the picture....and all the wonderful stories of the past. I appreciate your good efforts and thank you for your help

    2. Jim, I lost track of everyone I knew in Brownwood. My parents died; so did aunts and uncles. Cousins moved away and I lost touch with them. I still go back occasionally and visit old landmarks. I always go to the Lost Creek Cemetery where most of my ancestors are buried. Until my mother died, I attended the Gotcher reunion. I don't suppose they have one anymore. Billie Sutton Jefferies

    3. My grandmother Floyzell is the only person in my direct lineage to have been from the Brownwood area. She left there in about 1921 or so when her mother Dovie Strawn passed away. My grandma had 7 siblings all are passed on now. Her twin was Roy Dell (maybe one worn Roydell not sure) their nicknames were Punch and Judy. Then there as Willie (everyone called her Billie) Winnie, Velvia Severa (she had very bright red hair and i was told she was kind of the party girl...loved to dance the charleston and was good at it I knew her when I was a child and young adult she loved to drink Coca Cola and play bingo in her final years), Georgia, and her two older brothers were Noble and Elder. All were born with Roberts surnames. My grandma married Norman Powell From Colorado( he passed away a few years ago). They had two Daughters Tresha and Linda. My Mom Married an Evans and I married a King. My neuclear family have been in California since WWII or there abouts. 3. That is interesting about Beula. I am a Roberts Decendant by blood My grandma was a Roberts. She married Norman Powell My great grandpa was J H Roberts (given name Jason Hamilton, went by Jace). According to the information I can gather from my aunt Tresh (My grandma's daughter) and from Vicki who attended the Roberts family reunion...Jace which people at the reunion recalled to being a cousin and my grandma's to eldest brothers Noble Roberts and Elder Roberts had addended some family functions in the early 1900's. If only I could figure out who J H's parents are. the marriage record vicki sent me doesn't state the parents of either of my great grandparents. My G. Grandma was a Strawn and her family has been traced way back to Scotland and Norway. 1400's or 1500's according to my aunt tresh. But the road block (15 years long) has beeen with the roberts side. Is there any native american ancestery at all with the roberts that you know of? if so where did it start? maybe we can look Downward in the tree to find gaps since backwards is not getting us the info we need. Thanks for the further information.
