    3. I don't know if you ever got a reply from anyone about this. I went to the courthouse yesterday and I could not find a death record for Mr. Ivey or for Dora Easley. Since there is a possibility that Boren Hunter is still living I did not find a death record for him prior to 1987. Sorry, I didn't have better news, maybe there is an obit in the paper, I'll go look first chance I get. Patsy in Brownwood

    1. Cemetery look-up
    2. GL Dunivan
    3. I am in need of a look up for a death in Brown County. I have a death certificate and an obit from the Brownwood Bulletin but I have been unable to find the cemetery. The death certificate gives death at Owens TX, Nov 30 1915 with W. S. Cook Undertaker Co. and burial at Owens Cemetery. The obit gives burial in the cemetery at Owens. I have been told there is not an Owens Cemetery. The name was Sarah Elizabeth Dunivan but was misspelled in the obit as Dunwan. This is my grandfather’s mother. I really would like to visit the grave, if I could find it. Thank for your help, Garld -- Internal Virus Database is out-of-date. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. 2. Charlie, How very interesting to read your story. It sure brings back memories. I well remember Underwood's barbecue. Wasn't his house made of rocks? I also knew Shorty Jew. Once when I was attending Howard Payne, I went into his store and wanted to buy something that I didn't have enough money for and wanted to buy on credit. His assistant asked him about it. Shorty was up on a ladder and turned around and said in his curt voice, "That's Jess Sutton's daughter; let her have anything she wants." My cousin June Freeman had a beauty shop, and her mother, Nettie Garrett, my aunt, owned a beauty supply store. These were on Center Avenue. Does anyone remember the Bowie Theater? Also I spent many a Saturday at Mineral Wells swimming pool. I'm older than you, Charlie. I was born in 1932. We moved to May, TX, when I was 10, but all our relatives still lived in Brownwood and we visited there every week or two. My grandparents were Nat and Kate Gotcher. I had about a million 1st, 2d, 3d, 4th, and 5th cousins. I always thought I should move out of state to marry. Billie Sutton Jefferies Albuquerque, NM

    3. Pattie Its been too many years since those days in Brownwood. All I know for sure about the barber shop was it was "downtown" As a grade school kid I worked after school making popcorn at a local movie that was owned by L.D. Brown, then I worked as a pin setter at the bowling alley. That was before they had automatic pin setters. Then I worked at the skating rink putting the skates on the girls. That was really fun job. I did not get paid but I always got to skate free. Then I worked for Mr. Underwood before he had the cafe. He made the BBQ at home in his back yard and had a place in his driveway at his house that you went to to get the BBQ and take it home. I was the pot and pan washer. I still like Underwood's BBQ and go over there a couple of times a year just to get some. I always watch the people and wonder how many of them I knew as a young man. His house is right beside the cafe. I never got a school annual as we could not afford it. I wonder if the library has any that I could look at. Even though I went to Elementary and Jr. High in Brownwood, I can not tell you the name of them. I tried to find the Jr. High a couple of years ago and was not able to locate it. I know I was in the right area though. Perhaps the building is not there anymore. It was on the south east side and we had to walk under a little concrete underpass. I also was not able to find the "Hot Wells" Swimming Pool that had hot sulfur water in it. It came out of the ground boiling hot and smelled like rotten eggs but it was supposed to be real good for you to soak in it. I do remember always going to a clothing store called "Shorty the Jew" for school clothes. It fact I went over there and bought some clothes from him in 1961 the last time that I shopped in Brownwood. My daddy was still living there at the time. We used to ride our bicycles down Bangs Hill in the summer. Had to push them all of the way from the bottom to the top and ride back down. You could get going fast enough to pass some of the cars. That was bunches of fun, unless you wrecked and then it was not so much fun. I was born in Coleman Aug 18, 1937 but never lived there. We moved to Brownwood right after I was born then to Abilene in '55. Charlie Royall San Angelo, TX. I go back a long ways in Brownwood. I went to school there in the 40's, 50 & 51. I still have kin there (Cadenheads). I have been doing genealogy for 35 years. I do have one problem that I am not able to resolve. What are the chances of there being two Oscar A. Curry's in Brown Co. both with the same father and the same birth date? Zilch, nada, none! Oscar A. Curry married a Lillie Pearl Hunter 29 Jan 1905, Coleman Co. according to the Marriage Records. The 1910-1920-1930 Census of Brown Co. still show him with a wife named Pearl. Now there is information that he married Bessie May Ellis, Sept. 8, 1912 and that information is backed up with the official records. Plus it is in the inscriptions of Rural Cemeteries of Brown Co. I may never get this resolved. Lilly Pearl died 28 Apr. 1963, San Diego, CA. I could perhaps get more info with a obit of Oscar and then one of Pearl that might help straighten it out or mabey muddy the waters even more. AA Cury (Abram) and Mary are his mother and father.
