Hello All: I've found a strange reference from a man that I have been researching, Frank Hopkins. In birth records for two of his children (b. in Massachusetts in 1904 and 1906), the place of birth given for the father (Frank) is New Boston, TX. He has alternately given his birth date as 1865, 1872, 1878, 1885, and several years in-between. He has claimed that the day was 11 Aug. What exact year is the question. He states his father's name was Charles A. Hopkins. I find no Hopkins family in Bowie County in 1860, 1870 or 1880. In 1880 I find only two white males, both who are single. One is a C. Hopkins (pg 14D) and the other a J.A. Hopkins (pg 3b). This man was a teller of some very TALL tales and I have my doubts as to whether any of this is true or not. But, I want to explore every avenue, so I'd like to know if anyone knows of some resources, if they exist, to try to confirm or rule out the birth of a Frank (or Franklin, or Francis) Hopkins in New Boston, TX. A few things I'd also like to know: When was the town established? What churches existed at that time? Are there records of itinerant preachers, doctors, etc. that may shed light on this? Any and all help would be appreciated. Best regards. Nancy. Nancy Coleman ncroots@worldnet.att.net

Is anyone on this list familiar with an old area around Bassett that was called Stover? My mother came with her family from Mississippi in 1910 when she was eight years old. She said they got off the train at Bassett but it was called Stover then. I would like to know what area or precinct this would be in on the 1910 census. Thanks for your help. Kathlene Higgs McRae

Thanks, Jo Autrey Bowie County, Texas and Genealogy http://www.bowiecountytexas.net jautrey9@comcast.net ********************************************************************************** ----- Original Message ----- From: Shirley Erickson To: jautrey9@comcast.net Sent: Sunday, May 23, 2004 10:36 PM Subject: Washington Beardon b 1827 Bowie County Dear Jo, I'm enjoying the site at usroots.com. This week, I found out the Civil War discharge papers for Washington Beardon which state that he was born in (c. 1827) Bowie County, Texas. I've looked at the various families on your site and can only wonder how/if he relates to one of them. He married Mary Polly Akin Renfro in Arkansas in 1850 and they are listed in the 1850 census. Mary Polly Akin (b. 1818) was the daughter of William Akin and Rebecca McKinney. She is buried in Lampasas, Texas. What I'm really looking for is her first husband, Unknown Renfro, who was deceased or gone from the family prior to 1850. Together, they had 4 children. I have much on the family and my daughter and I are planning to join DRT but I need a little more proof. My link to Mary Polly Akin Renfro Beardon is through her daughter, Sarah "Sally" Holly Renfro Roten, born 1844 in either Texas or Arkansas depending on what census is viewed. Mary Polly Akin would have married Mr. Renfro prior to 1840 when the first child was born. The first child was Rebecca E. Renfro (1840) who married Bolin Smith. Another child was James A. Renfro (1842) who fought alongside Washington Beardon in the Civil War. Sarah Holly was 3rd and is buried next to her mother in Lampasas. The last child was John Mark Renfro who moved back and forth between Arkansas and Texas. He was a Baptist preacher and is buried in Oklahoma The family lived in Arkansas and Texas. In Texas, they were in Bowie County, Coryell, Bosque and McLennan. Some were in Burleson/Washington County and finally Bell and Lampasas. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Regards, Shirley Erickson Can you send me some direction on this?
