Folks, They are on-line and ready for viewing! This is the entire message I received for us from John Schunk of S & K Publishers. We thank S & K for their generosity in contributing these to the archives for everyone one to use, free of charge. To search for a particular surname, use the "Find" option in the "VIEW" bar at the top of your browser when you visit the reports. Due to the generous contributions of those participating in the project for the Bowie County census records on compact disk, the following records are now available for the US GenWeb Census Archives Project for Bowie County Texas for the years 1850-1860-1870-1880 and 1900. . Credit has been given to everyone who participated in the project. Folks, since these reports are not indexed but are exact copies of the original microfilm itself, you might be interested in purchasing the Index books for years 1850-1880 from the Texarkana USA Genealogical Society in Texarkana, Texas, they are perfect companions to the compact disks. Looking for details on the death of William Red(i)ford Preston who died in Bowie County,TX in 1896 shot in the head. He was married to Rosa Arminta Cornelius, known as Minnie. They had the following children: Cyrus, Vina,Janie Elizabeth, and Willie C. Preston. After the death of William, Rosa Arminta remarried a W.E.Torrans and ended up near Shreveport , LA. This line is documented in the IGI but the submitters do not respond to letters of inquiry although the envelopes are not returned. I'm related through the grandparents of Rosa Arminta (Minnie) Cornelius. Hi folks, Our Becky is having such a great time visiting with all the family in Texas and Louisiana, she has extended her trip another week! I knew once she could ever get here, it would be difficult to leave us:) She is in contact, but she is using a laptop computer and it's difficult to use as she isn't used to it, but does send her regards to everyone and hopes you are finding things to share on your families. Since she can't access her regular mail server but using her sister's, she will answer all her mail as soon as she returns home. Becky is all over Bowie, collecting materials from family members and taking rolls of film in the various cemeteries, so far she has eight rolls of film to develop. As soon as she returns home, she will start creating a "virtual cemetery" for us. She will be returning to the Bowie area next week for more visits to family to collect as much information as possible to share with us.. So, she is now in La., but will be in our neck of the woods soon. Have a great weekend, everyone. Jo Autrey
I was wondering if any one on the message board would know of the name Landtroop. I am not sure of the spelling but I know he married my grandmother about 1900 (Mary ) and they had a son named Otis. Christine
Hi Christine and lists, You can search the various boards on either Bowie County site you are interested in. Each site also has a search engine which will search the site for information. Hi folks, I received this announcement from RootsWeb and thought you might want to read the information straight from the source - RootsWeb. There is an address to visit for more details on the merger of RootsWeb and MyFamiliy, better known as Ancestry. Jo Autrey ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Good News, Bad News, Good News: The Merger of RootsWeb and MyFamily.com Good news: You, our users, have helped create at RootsWeb one of the largest and most popular sites on the Internet. In May, we had over 149 million page views (according to Nielsen NetRatings combined home and work statistics), sent over 155 million e-mails, and handled over two million downloads of files from the various archives hosted at RootsWeb. Everyone, take a bow! This is an incredible community of genealogists, and the advances we're all making in our research due to the sharing that occurs here is unprecedented. Bad news: The more popular RootsWeb becomes, the more costly it is to simply stay alive and online. Expenses continue to exceed revenue. We ran up a truly scary loss last year. Without outside help, it's not clear how long we'd be able to go on like this. Good news: MyFamily.com (you may know them better as Ancestry.com) recognizes the importance of the genealogical community that has grown here at RootsWeb, and wants that community to continue to thrive. They're excited to provide the financial stability we need to ensure RootsWeb will be around for years to come. Brian and I are pleased by Ancestry.com's coming involvement with RootsWeb. Now we can all focus on helping each other on the mailing lists and message boards, uploading our GEDCOMs, and building Web pages to share our research. Better news: As a special thank you to those of you who have helped make RootsWeb such a vibrant Internet community, Ancestry.com is making the following offer: You are invited to visit Ancestry.com today and sign up for a FREE 14-day trial with no obligation. You'll gain full access to all 600 million names in more than 2,500 databases. Go to the following address to begin your free trial now: http://ancestry.com/subscribe/subscribetrialx.asp?sourcecode=G11BA <http://ancestry.com/subscribe/subscribetrialx.asp?sourcecode=G11BA> You must activate your FREE trial by July 5, 2000. More good news: No one is going to charge you to use RootsWeb. You'll still find RootsWeb at www.RootsWeb.com. Everything you're used to using will still be here: the 19,000 mailing lists, the hundreds of millions of names in free genealogy databases, the interactive learning guides, the weekly RootsWeb Review and Missing Links, the numerous tools for tracing your family history, the tens of thousands of message boards, the thousands of independently authored web sites. RootsWeb will still support worthy genealogy projects and societies, such as the USGenWeb Project (www.USGenWeb.org), the Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild (ISTG.rootsweb.com) and the FreeBMD Project (FreeBMD.rootsweb.com), and other groups that provide free genealogical resources. And don't worry, you won't be charged to access RootsWeb. No one will put your data on CD without your permission. Our Privacy Policy (http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/pledge.html) and our Acceptable User Policy (http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/aup.html) are unchanged. Other promises made over the years will continue to be honored. You'll still deal with the same RootsWeb volunteers and employees. In fact, most users won't notice any changes, except exciting new tools, more content, and better genealogical resources. If you would like more information, please check out our official press release at http://www.ancestry.com/home/celebrate/rootsrelease.htm Thanks again for your support! Now, let's go figure out where great-great-grandpa really came from, before that UFO deposited him in rural Indiana in 1848... Karen +

Becky is now on the last week of her vacation to Texas and Louisiana for family reunions and research. She has had a taste of spending only a few days in Bowie, walked 31 cemeteries before moving on to Fannin and finally coming to Dallas, she is attempting to extend her trip for additional time to spend in Bowie again.) If she is able to extend her trip, she will be back in the Bowie County area, taking up where she left off, except she is now heading for the various libraries, the Texarkana College library, the newspapers and many connected families for more family research. She's checking in on the list from her sister's lap top, so she's keeping up with us in case anyone needs her. Take care, Jo Autrey Becky Cowen-Cornelius Linda Binger
Becky , Linda and I would like to take this opportunity to thank each person who participated in the Census CD project for the years 1850-1900. We have received the first CD which contains the years 1850-1880, the 1900 Census will be mailed tomorrow. As a result of your continued support and more than generous contributions, in most cases as much as ten times the minimum amount required for each year, we each now have our set of CDs, and in addition, as a part of the program, the US GenWeb Archives will also receive a complete set of these records. As an additional bonus, since these records have now been made, now others following us will be able to obtain these years at their convenience and will receive them promptly. although not at the special group price we received.. Each person who participated in the initial project will be given credit by S & K Publications to US GenWeb Archives for this wonderful contribution per Mr. Schunk. Since not just one person was responsible for these records being made available, all will be included in the credits. Again, thanks for your support and generous spirits. Those of you who ordered the census cd's, it will be helpful to have the index for the years 1850-1880 which can be purchased from the Texarkana USA Genealogical Society. I purchased my set and now that I've received my cd, I'm ready to get to work on them. As soon as the rest of the years get indexed in book format, I also plan to purchase them as well. Have fun, everyone! Jo Autrey Becky Cowen-Cornelius Linda Binger
Here is the picture and description of the cemetery that is being searched for. Not a great picture, I know, but you can make out the headstones, the elongated mounds, and household objects. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tx/bowie/cemsearch.html <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tx/bowie/cemsearch.html">Bowie Co. Cemetery Search</A> All of the headstones are alike, and there are household objects lovingly placed around the graves. The graves themselves are long mounds, elongated. University at Austin has a book and the cemetery was talked about. I was so amused by the cemetery picture that I asked if I could make an overhead projection of the image and the author said yes. The librarian made it right there. I use it amongst others in my talks about cemeteries and especially southern ones. Above is a scan of the image. Perhaps your group can figure out which one it is. SOMEONE has to know about this fascination. I have seen similar in Texas, but this one indeed takes the cake. I had figured that it would be so well known in the county ..... unless it was missed, for if the caretaker was gone now, it might be mistaken for a dump, if weeds grew up in it. I wanted to come and take color pictures . It is an old tradition, especially the mounding of the graves, I just hadn't seen one this elongated. I do not have the Book Authors name, but it definitely said Bowie County Texas and it is a white race family. Thankyou for your help! [email protected] (Susan Hawkins) Fannin Co. A copy will also be sent to the USGenWeb Archives for placement on-line. Just a status report for those who have pledged for the 1910 and 1920 Bowie County Census, the total amount pledged is now $699. (Total goal of $1520 needed). Below are her two messages to me, and there is a picture attachment I can not send on to the list, but will send to anyone directly if you are interested in seeing it. ************************************* Subj: a question From: [email protected] (Susan Hawkins) To: [email protected] I have spoken to the person who wrote about Texas Cemeterys and they couldnt get the name of the Cemetery pictured in Bowie County that was unusal for its enlongated mounds and huge amouts of household furniture and objects placed caringly along the mounds , Do you know of the cemetery I describe? The stones are all alike and there is even a rocking horse on one grave. susan *********************************** Subj: Re: a question From: [email protected] (Susan Hawkins) To: [email protected] I have looked and looked and not found it . It was one of the University presses and several years ago I was at Austin and the book was talked about that day. i was so amused by the cemetery picture that I asked if I could make an overhead projection of the image and the author said yes. the librarian made it right there. i use it amonst others in my talks about cemeteries and especially southern ones. I will attach a scan of the image. Perhaps your group can figure out which one it is. SOMEONE has to know about this facination. I have seem similar in Texas but this one indeed takes the cake. I had figured that it would be so well known in the county ..... unless it was missed for if the caretaker was gone now it might be mistaken for a dump if weeds grew up in it. I wanted to come and take color pictures . It is an old tradtion, especially the mounding of the graves I just hadn't seen one this elongated. susan hawkins Fannin county TxGenWeb master and Tombstone transcription person.
