    3. Hi folks, I received this site from another friend and thought I'd pass it on for others to visit. It has some great information on copyright laws as well as common violations (such as passing on e-mails from other mailing lists), taking information from a web site under the claim of "public domain" and a lot of other surprising violation information. It also has great information on how to get the most use from census reports, military records and courthouse research, and many other topics. I have to admit I have seen many of these pages sent to many mailing lists with "author unknown"..... I hope you will visit Linda Haas Davenport's site. You can contact Linda with comments at: [email protected] http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~haas/learningcenter.html I have posted a brief history of the federal income tax and what records are available to genealogists. 1. [TXBOWIE] Texarkana: Historic fire 115 years ago today.
    2. Historic fire burned town on this date (EDITOR'S NOTE: The following article appeared in the Daily Texarkanian on this date in 1923. The byline identified the author only as "an Old Timer." The story was a retrospective of a blaze that roared through Texarkana 115 years ago today. The following is a direct copy of the original first-person article. It was brought to our attention by a reader and former friend of J.Q. Mahaffey, the long-time editor of the Gazette who died last month.) At about 1:00 on the morning of Aug. 21, 1885, Texarkana was visited by one of the most destructive fires in its entire history. The weather was exceedingly warm the evening before, and I had laid down on a table with a book under my head in the mayor's office, then located on the second story of Bramble's warehouse, which occupied the present site of "The Criterion," on East Broad Street. I had been asleep for perhaps a couple of hours when I was aroused by the cry of "Fire" and the report of numerous pistol shots. Looking out of the rear window toward the south I saw that the Arlington (formerly the Draughon) hotel, a large two story brick occupying part of the present vacant ground just east of the Huckins House, was ablaze. There was no modern fire department then, only a hook and ladder company, operated by volunteer firemen, and the fact that a lively breeze had sprung up and was blowing directly north, made it clear to everybody that the fire would have to "run its natural course." The flames swept everything in that block, including the Smith drug company corner (then a dry goods store), Weinstein and Kosminsky's big store (now the O'Dwyer and Ahern Co.) and all adjoining buildings, and then crossed to the north side of Broad street, where it made a clean sweep of everything from State Line Avenue east to Vine street and north to Third street, including the postoffice, which was then located where Andrew Rose now has his offices. As I recall, all the destroyed buildings were frame structures, except the Arlington hotel and the postoffice. Charles E. Dixon was proprietor of the hotel, and W.W. Shaw was postmaster. Several of the places that were burned were operated as saloons and these put up cloth tents and started their gin mills running again within less than 48 hours. Other lines of business waited until brick houses could be built for their accommodation. Everybody said (under his breath) that the fire was of incendiary origin, but nobody cared to make any particular investigation of the matter, as all felt pretty certain that to do so would have meant a funeral for the investigator. © VHR

    1. [TXBOWIE] New GenConnect Boards Information
    2. jmautrey
    3. Hi folks, Here is a message I received today regarding the new options available for those using the GenConnect boards. If you have not used them, please visit the site below and discover new research tools and learn of the new options and how to use them. This messages is from Joan Young, a member of the GenConnect Team. Jo A. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Hi, all- I have a couple announcements to make to the list subscribers since this list has been extremely quiet for quite some time. I want to make sure everyone is aware of the revised, updated, FAQs for using GenConnect: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/HINTS/userfaqs.html Everyone using the boards should familiarize themselves with the information in the FAQs. If you have problems using the boards that are not addressed in the User FAQs please let me know. Also, you may have noticed the new look on many of the RootsWeb pages with the masthead at the top that includes a tab to the "boards." This tab is a link to the newly designed GenConnect front page where you will find many snazzy new features. The two features you will notice immediately are the new Global Surname Search box and the new BoardFinder. Type in a surname and let GenConnect's Global Search engine find any messages that include this surname in the Surname field--on any board in the GenConnect system starting with the most recent messages. Use the BoardFinder to locate any Query Board in the system. There are three boxes for use with the BoardFinder. For Surname boards type the surname into the first box to be taken to the Query board for that surname. For US County boards type in the County name where indicated and select the state from the drop-down menu (box 2). Click to go to the Query board for that county. For International boards select the Country (box 3) from the menu--and where appropriate type in the specific regional board name (box 1). You can use the BoardFinder for Special Collections Query boards but you must know the specific board name to type into box 1. If you are unsure of a board name or the spelling of a board name, or if you are looking for a Non-query (document) board, use the links to the appropriate Index pages on the left side of the page. Anything you need within GenConnect is accessible by link or search box from the new main page. *************************** Joan Young [email protected] Newbie Coordinator Admin Mentor "How-To" Guru The GenConnect Team ***************************

I have not completely visited each section of the site, so do not know if it is all free or not. Often some sites offer free information and have other sections which are accessible only by members, but the cemetery listings do appear to be free. This is not an endorsement in any way of whatever they offer for sale, only the information which they provide to researchers. http://www.interment.net/

    1. [TXBOWIE] Sheridan Family Reunited After 54 Years
    2. jmautrey
    3. Bowie County Citizens Tribune/DeKalb News Aug. 16, 2000 Used with Permission By Kathrina Lehrman of the Tribune Staff Billy and Dorothy Sheridan had an exciting time on Saturday. Billy and his family were reunited with two nieces after 54 years. The Sheridan's own the Buffalo Gap Ranch. It opened in September 1996 and is home to many exotic pets, such as zebras, camels, and buffalo just to name a few. Billy and Dorothy Sheridan have been residents of the area for 33 years. Fred and Bessie Sheridan, originally of County Line Community, raised a traditionally large family. Their children included Billy, Faye, Harold, Alvin, Marvin Lester, Clyde, Richard, J.C., Marshall, Jimmy, Joe, Reba, Bea, Wanda, and twins Doug and Dan. When the twins were 6 months old, their father passed away, so Bessie raised the children alone. With such a large family, their home was usually the pivot point for everyone. Their home was always open to anyone because of their close-knit family. Fifty-four years ago, Marvin Lester Sheridan divorced and his wife and tow children (Barbara Louise and Caroline Elizabeth) moved away. Marvin Lester remarried and his son Ronnie was born. Unfortunately, Marvin Lester was killed in a tractor accident. Due to the circumstances, everyone lost touch with the mother and two nieces. Faye Sheridan, a resident of San Jose, Calif., decided to take it upon herself to locate the missing girls and hit the jackpot. She knew that her brother Billy Sheridan was exactly four days older than Barbara Louise, but no idea what their last name was or even the state they lived in. So, armed with the birth dates and their names, she began her search. Her first attempt didn't bring forth any results, other than a list of names and addresses of several Barbara Louises across the United States (none of which included the right one). But she persisted. She hired Julia Rollins of Austin. Before she knew it, she was having a tearful phone reunion with Barbara Louise. The girls were overjoyed to hear from their family, and arrangements were made to reunite the family as quickly as possible. On Saturday, the nieces and their Aunt Faye flew into Tyler and then drove into New Boston to Buffalo Gap Ranch for a reunion with the family. They were also able to meet their half brother, Ron, whom they didn't even know existed. Barbara Louise, who was about 6 years old when they left, could barely speak because she was so overcome with emotion. "It is overwhelming and exciting," she said. Caroline Elizabeth was around 3 years old when they left. She does, however, have a few vague memories. "There was a big table in the farm house kitchen, and a huge bedroom with beds all lined up against the wall. This has been an incredible time for me," she said. Their uncle Billy, who hosted the reunion, said, "I am so happy to see my nieces, but I am also sad to think that though the years, they might have needed us and we weren't there. We missed a lot of years together. We will all be busy catching up now".

    3. Hi folks, Late winter, early Spring I was contacted by an editor of the Family Tree Magazine regarding my web site. She told me she was interested in how I started, what I learned as being an owner of a web site, and the pros or cons of owning one. I was informed the article would be included in the summer issue.....right, I thought, as I freely shared how I became a site owner, the joys of it, etc. Well, today I received my free introductory copy of Family Tree Magazine, reviewed by Roots Review, and on page 27, there is my article:) Andrea Autrey originally set up my site, it was later reorganized and expanded by Kristy Williams and another friend, Becky Cowen-Cornelius is working on the Bowie County part of my site while I am learning and adding to my personal information to the rest of the site. I am deeply indebted to each of them. I not only have made many genealogical connections, but even more connections which became lasting friends.
