    2. Subj: [TXCASS-L] Fw: USGenWeb Volunteerism at it's best! Date: 3/23/01 6:57:12 PM Central Standard Time From: [email protected] (Dana Thomas) This is a wonderful example of what USGenWeb Project volunteers accomplish each and every day! By volunteers I also mean those of you who spend your valuable time and efforts transcribing records to go on the USGenWeb Project sites. Without you we (county coordinators) would not have near the assets for our county pages. Without a doubt those of you who donate your information are my heroes! Thanks for all you do, Dana Thomas CC Cass County TXGenWeb Project ----- Original Message ----- Carolyn, Persons who do volunteer work are seldom given the thanks and praise that they deserve, and that is sad. In looking at the Algenweb site that you manage on a volunteer basis, I can imagine the time that you must devote to that labor of love. I want to share with you a story concerning that site and the help that it provides to people. Late yesterday afternoon as I entered the Grand Bay Cemetery to lower the flag which we fly each day, I noticed a car with a Maryland license tag parked in the cemetery. I looked around the grounds to see if I could see anyone who might be looking for the grave of a loved one that perhaps I could offer help to. I spotted a young man and woman near some trees that had partially hidden them from my view initially. The young lady was talking excitely on a cell phone and I overheard her say "we found her". The young man was looking at some papers that he held in his hand. I approached them to offer any assistance that I could concerning the cemetery and those who are interred there. I introduced myself to them and asked if I could help them locate a particular grave. The young lady, who had obviously been crying, replied: "We just found it. It is the grave of my gr grandmother. We have been searching for her grave ever since I became interested in genealogy and we have finally located it." I mentioned that we had recently established the cemetery directory on the internet. The young man replied, "yes, we know, that is how we found the grave." And he showed me the print out of the cemetery directory that he had downloaded from the site that you manage. That experience gave me a great deal of satisfaction from the realization that we had already helped someone find a loved one, and the data has only been on the Net for a little over a month. Thank you for making it possible. Sincerely yours, Roland D Harper ==== TXCASS Mailing List ==== Please remember that the Cass County, TXGenWeb Project relies solely on volunteers. 3. Posted on: Bowie County Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Bowie/10545 Surname: ------------------------- The Texarkana Genealogical Society has about 9000 original marriage licenses from Bowie County that were never picked up. William is listed as William H. Morris married Arlinda Johnson in 1914. Since it appears that William is kin to Jerome you might want to recover his marriage license. There is a link on the Bowie County Gen Web to the Texarkana Society that will give you instructions on how to obtain the license. Marland

    3. Posted on: Bowie County Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Bowie/10544 Surname: ------------------------- I found very little on Jerome W. Morris in the Bowie County records that I have. He is buried in the Wilder Cemetery at Hooks along with Arlinda (1895 - 1940) and her husband William M. Morris (1875 - 1947). Arlinda was the wife of Wm. Jerome W. Morris (1875 - 1931) husband of Sallie who is not listed as being buried there. She could be of course and not had a tombstone from which almost all of the BC Cemetery records were made. I found a death record for Jerome: b. 01-01-1853, d. 04-09-1931. He was born in AR. The informant was William M. Morris. Wm. M. was married on 11-15-1914 to Arlinda Johnson.

    2. Reply to Lisa and all list members As generous as all volunteers are, I don't believe anyone is going to perform a search for obits with no more information than has been provided. You should try to give a date at least within a week of the occurrence. The Gazette newspapers are on microfilm and are not indexed. To anyone requesting a lookup of any kind, please always include all pertinent data such as names, state, county, dates, type of lookup, etc. Thanks and happy searching. The Fullerton Genealogy Study Informed Consent for the Fullerton Study of Genealogists - Genealogy Survey A Master's Thesis Project by Pamela Drake California State University, Fullerton Nearly 60% of U.S. residents participate in some genealogical activities. A thesis project designed to address these questions is being conducted at California State University Fullerton. Interested genealogists and family historians are being asked to fill out a 20 minute survey online. All information will be anonymously collected and no identifying information about individual answers will be divulged. 2. Susie McFarland Lemin
    3. Posted on: Bowie County Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Bowie/10538 Surname: Cabell ------------------------- I didn't know of the stores in Bowie County, but I am not surprised. My husband is the great great nephew of the founders of the Cabell Creamery. There were lots of corner stores in Dallas during the the mid century. The Southland Corpartion bought it and turned it into the famous 7-11 Corner Stores. I don't know if Southland still owns the stores or not. Lewis Rector Cabell was the orginial founder I think. They called him Uncle Rector. He had a brother Lawerence Duvall Cabell (Uncle Duvall) that may have been an owner also. The stores started out selling bread and dairy products and then progressed from there. The stores were 'open front' stores and folks would drive up to the curb, and assistant would come out and take the person's order and fill it. They also gave credit that was paid once a month or once a week according to how the person was paid. The Cabells originaly came to Texas after the Civil War. Gen. William Lewis Cabell and his brother John both set up business' in Dallas. The Gen. had 5 sons and 2 daughters, one of the sons and one of the daughters died in infancy. The reamaining children were: John Joseph, Katie Doswell, Benjamin Elias, Lawrence Duvall and Lewis Rector. I have failed in putting Duvall and Rectors wives in my data files. But Benjamin Elias was Mayor of Dallas, as was his father and his son. Charles Pearre Cabell, Benjamin's son was head of the Air Force Inteligence during the Cuban Crisis in 1961
