Thanks to everyone who responded to my request for assistance. Bruce Wiland actually found out that Lars did not die in 1889, but was divorced and living in Waco in 1900. He then did more research and found Lars's burial record in 1914 in the First Street Cemetery. So my great-aunt made up the story about Lars dying in 1889 in order to cover up the divorce. Goodness!
