Hello List Here's this week's column, Good luck to everyone in their research and thank you to all who contributed. Please be sure to send in your Bosque County memories, queries, family stories and reunion information to be included here and in the Bosque County News. Thanks so much, LaDawn Garland Bosque Co, Tx garland@htcomp.net ************************************************ Out Of Our Past Tracing Our Bosque County Roots March, 13, 2002 Once again I'm encouraging everyone to send in their Bosque County memories, family stories, queries and reunion information. It is so important to preserve our family histories and the stories of our ancestors, and you never know who out there is searching for clues in their family research that you may have. Bosque County Urban Family My maternal great-grandparents were Jan and Anna (Orsak) Urban. They immigrated to Burleson County, Texas from Novy Hrozenkov, Moravia in the Austrian Empire, which later became part of Czechoslovakia and is currently in the Czech Republic. Many people mistakenly assume all Czechs are "Bohemians". Bohemia is the eastern region of Chechoslovakia/Czech Republic. At least 85% of Texas Czechs are from Moravia in the West. They are a distinct regional ethnic group, though all consider themselves "Czechs". My grandfather was the second son; Peter Karl Urban married Klara Svach in 1896. Klara was from Lee county, but their marriage license was issued and recorded in Hill County, and they were married by the priest in West. Our family speculates that they had eloped. Peter's older brother John lived in the West area and we believe they came to a place familiar to my grandfather. Peter and Klara initially settled in Burleson county, where the three oldest children, Clara, 1898, Joseph, 1900 and Peter, 1902, were born. They moved to Hill County about 1905 and to Bosque County about 1915. Our relatives who remain in the West Community refer to us as the "Bosque County Urban's" just as we call them the "West cousins." Because Peter K. took his family out of the ethnic Czech communities and lived among the other settler groups, most of his children married persons of other ethnic heritage, most notably German. In fact, 2 girls and 2 boys from the Urban side married two boys and 2 girls from the Gus Sommerfeld family. This produced a large number of "double first cousins". My parents were Anna Victoria Urban and Rinert F. Sommerfeld. Both had grown up in Bosque County, but after marriage they lived and farmed for a short time in the China Spring Community. In 1941, R.F. and Ann bought a farm in the Mosheim Community of Bosque County, where they lived until R.F. opened his welding and mechanic shop in Clifton in 1962. R.F. died in 1996. Ann lives in Clifton at age 88. I am belatedly working on all branches of the family genealogy. I regret leaving this endeavor until most of the participants are gone, but it has been a joy to discover and get to know my roots. Hello List while going through some old copies of the Meridian Tribune today, I came across this death notice. It caught my attention because it said the deceased was a pioneer citizen of Bosque County. I had never come across the name before and this family wasn't listed in any of the old census.........anyway, thought someone might find some use for it. Meridian Tribune March 1, 1901 Jno Camfield an old confederate soldier, died at his home near Clifton on last Thursday. Mr. Camfield was one of the pioneer citizens of Bosque County and his many friends will be pained to hear of his death. So we looked around a little and found this J. F. Camfield and Maggie Singleton were issued a marriage license June 22, 1868 in Bosque County. and this George M Canfield child of J.F. & M Camfield buried in Boggy cemetery. died 1888 2 years old. Hope someone find something here and would love to hear from you if this is your ancestors. thanks LaDawn Garland Bosque Co, Tx garland@htcomp.net

An incredible thing has happened for those searching for kindred connections in the USA. Our terrifically wonderful Hugh Wallis has done it again!!! Yes, you can now search the IGI by town, county and state with only a surname... What was done for the UK has graciously been extended to US records by harnessing the information so lovingly put together by the LDS. Hello List I'm researching my Webb family that lived here in Bosque County in the Iredell area. In the 1900 census Minerva Webb Maddle was listed with her children Maud and Nancy R. there was another child not in the census and I have no idea who this child was. Minerva was my 3rd g grandmother. Minerva Webb married a Jim Maddel/Maddle probably sometime around 1880 and I have never been able to find any trace of him. Minerva was already a widow by 1900. I'm hoping someone out there may have come across the Maddel name somewhere or would like to hear from any of the Webb family from that area. Minerva Webb was the daughter of Theophilus Webb Jr and Milly Helton they were originally from Tennessee and had been in Navarro County before Bosque. Minerva was listed in the census living next to her brothers James L Webb. b. April 1866 and Francis Webb b. Sept 1864.all born in Tennessee. I have never been able to find anything on the Maddle family, it is an unusual surname and there doesn't seem to be much information out there. Just thought maybe someone may have come across it somewhere in their research. Thanks LaDawn Garland Bosque Co, Tx garland@htcomp.net

This website located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~txbosqu2/ is maintained beautifully by Bettie Wood and the information there is provided by many, many wonderful volunteers researching their Bosque County families. The award is quite an honor and well deserved. It is an amazing site and there is a huge amount of Bosque County information to search through. If you haven't ever visited it, take a look you just might find information on your families there. I would like to thank everyone who asked about the column and it's absence. I really appreciate your patience, and now I'm asking you again to send in your family stories, queries, reunion information or anything you want to share about your Bosque County families. This column is printed in the Bosque County News and on the web as well, so you might just make some family connections researching your same families. I attended the Bosque County Historical Preservation Luncheon on Saturday, this year's preservation awards were presented to The Old Gap Bank building, Bob Viertel, The Star Cafe, Jeff and Debra Nelson, the Rohne House, Geraldine Edson, and the Lay-Strosser House, Billy & Joe Lay and Mary Kruega. The old photos of the buildings and homes were wonderful and to see them restored today is so exciting. Here's hoping that many more local individuals will decide to restore their historic buildings to their original design. The name you mentioned an the article you had posted, Mrs. Frank Kell---they were the neighbors to my Renfro's. I would be thrilled to receive the newspaper column you mentioned, Thanks, Jean Renfro Copeland res0m7ub@verizon I have been trying to locate my g-g grandmother. Her name was Lenis Angelina (Angie) Honeycutt b. 17 Feb 1858 in AR....d. 15 Dec 1929.....m. Jefferson Davis Goyne 1875 in Lamar Co., TX. This family is listed on the 1880 Bosque Co. Census and all their children were born in Bosque. There is a Mrs J.D. Goyne buried in Fairy Cemetery in Hamilton Co. The lady at the Hamilton Co. GEN Society told me she was probably buried there because the family lived closer to this cem than one in Iredell. I have checked with Bosque and Hamilton Co. and they do not have a record of death. I have also checked the surrounding counties and find nothing. On the 1880 census her mother listed as Mrs. M.E. Wall was living with them. Evidently she remarried after Mr. Honeycutt died. I cannot find death record on Mrs. M.E. Wall either. I will appreciate any help you may be able to provide on my grandmother. Sherry Stringer stringer47@cox-internet.com I am looking for any information about my grandfather Robert Kirk Williams, of Meridian, born approximately1903 and my grandmother Hazle Tidwell Williams, of Iredell, born approximately 1907. Howdy all! I didn't realize that today was Texas Indepence Day! The following are neat links provided by Gail from another list Bettie <>< ------------------------------------------------------------------------ These are two links I highlight for the period from March 2 to April 21. The first is the complete text of the Texas Declaration of Independence, and the second is Yale's Avalon Project: Texas from Independence to Annexation 1836-1846. http://www.lsjunction.com/docs/tdoi.htm http://www.yale.edu/lawweb/avalon/texmenu.htm
Yes, Ruth, you must be trying for DAR??? You do have to always copy the front of the book you take something out of for lineage proof. I don't know what book you two were talking about but one good source in Texas is the Baylor "Texas Collections". They have a whole building with nothing but Texas history. You can find alot there. Be sure to get the first page and also a page that has the author of it. They don't honor just any book. It must be written by a genealogist or county history book.
I have a set of the 1850 census microfim records for California, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas and Utah. I thought it was the right year to look for my ancestors but turns out they are on 1860 census. I would cell for reduced price to anyone who can use them. Pat Sommerfeld Lyon patsroar@htcomp.net
Hello List, Just wanted to let everyone know, that beginning in the next issue of the Bosque County News that I will be putting together the column, Out Of Our Past, tracing our Bosque County Roots once again . It has been a hectic time these last few months, with a total revamping of our newspaper and the way it is produced as well (which meant I had to learn a whole new way of doing things) and illness in my family ( my father is in line for a lung transplant) it left little time for working on the column. Well things have finally settled down, >>>knock on wood<<< and we're up and running again. So if anyone would like to contribute a story about their Bosque County families, a query, or reunion information. I would love to include them. Just email me at garland@htcomp.net and put Bosque Column in the subject line.... I have so enjoyed working on the column with all the great people on this list, and really missed my time researching beautiful Bosque County. I can't wait to tell our newspaper readers about the Bosque County site being voted County of the year. I am so proud of everyone who contributed and did such a wonderful job and Bettie Wood especially for leading the way, what a fantastic job she has done. If you have emailed me in the past few months and I didn't get back to you, please email me again, and forgive me for not answering. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks so much LaDawn Garland Bosque Co, Tx garland@htcomp.net

I've been doing this for about 20 years. Not as long as some folks I'm sure... but I have a few stories. I won' t bore you with all of them. My youngest daughter has had the most experiences tagging along with me on these hunts. When she was three I had her with me in a cemetery with very large tombstones. I became so absorbed with looking that I wasn't paying much attention to her. In a minute I heard "MAAAA-MAAA!" Bless her heart she was behind a big stone and couldn't see me. Last year she (now 17 years old)was with me again at the cemetery I mentioned in my previous email. However, it was fast becoming too dark to take pictures. I had not driven over 200 miles just to go home empty handed, so I got out the big paper and started doing rubbings, and taking notes. I didn't realize how dark it was, until I had to ask her to turn the lights on the pick up on so that I could see what I was doing! She wouldn't even get out of the truck. HA! I must admit that I am glad that no one saw me then. It might have been hard to explain! Donna Irby CUPPS, KING
