    3. My mom Sylvia King, is my best friend! Not that it has always been this way. We had our rocky times when I was in the wonderful teenage years. When she retired, I worried that a woman who had been president of the National Payroll Association might get bored "down on the farm". So, I decided to coach her and encourage her to learn how to do genealogy. Wow! I need not have worried about her being bored. She and I have spent many wonderful hours traveling - in libraries, court houses, museums and cemeteries. In fact we have traveled to Bosque County two times. She answers queries for our webpage for the Eastland County Genealogical Interest Group (http://eastland.net/genealogical/). She also makes beautiful quilts...all by hand. Even the piecing is done by hand. She has done them for children and now is doing them for her numerous grandchildren. She is the voice of reason, when I am upset or discouraged. I always ask her advice when I face a difficult decision. And her advice is always valuable. What a mom! Donna Irby searching for KINGS, CUPPS in Beautiful Bosque

    1. [TXBOSQUE] Great moms, etc.
    2. My mother, Lillamae Younger, was born May 28, 1913 on the family ranch outside of Fowler in Bosque County, Texas. She was the second child of Williamson Henry and Stella B. McKisick Younger. When she was a teenager, her parents moved to Dallas from Henrietta, TX, where Lil attended and graduated from Sunset High School in Oak Cliff. She was a cheerleader there and apparently fairly popular. Lil was musically precocious and could play the piano without the use of sheet music. She played professionally; yet, she couldn't read a note. "Just hum it; I'll play it." My uncle, Dr. Harold Younger [now deceased] of Dallas, was a budding dentist, and Mom helped put him through dental school by playing the piano for his singing group as regulars on WRR radio in Dallas. She danced, loved the theater, and aspired to be another Ginger Rogers, whom she saw win a dance contest in Dallas. That aspiration changed when she met my father, Grady Ellis, and decided to settle down with him instead. He was pretty cute! They married in '34, and a year and one month later I was born. Lil was a great wife, mother, and talented jack-of-all trades. Everybody loved Lil, and Lil loved everybody, especially my father. I remember her dark auburn hair and green eyes. She was a beautiful woman with legs that put Betty Grable's to shame. She was a stay-at-home mother when most of my friends' moms were working in the 50's. She was always so THERE that as a teenager I often wished she'd get a job or something. She had an instinct about what I was up to, and I never got away with anything. There she was! Hovering and waiting to pounce. Mom was vibrant, beautiful, talented, healthy, and fun loving. She loved card games and played bridge with a vengence every Tuesday night with the same bridge group from the time I was five years old until right before she went into the nursing home. We lost her to Alzheimer's in 1995. She had been sick for about ten years. When I see my children with their children, I wish she were here to see them, too. There are so many things I wish I could share with her now.

My sister was born about 10 months later, July 10, 1933. Then I didn't come along until 1946. I grew up feeling like I had two moms, with my mother & big sister. My mother was a typical farm wife, she worked at home, and in the fields, barns, garden, etc. It makes me angry to hear someone say, "do you work or stay at home?" Even in this day and time, a farm wife is a full partner in the "family business." Farm wives who work outside the farm hold down two jobs, and frequently support the farming since it has become so unprofitable in many cases. In the late 1950's my dad had to take an outside job to support us and my mom did the feeding and all care for the animals. Daddy would come home from his job and plow until 10 or 11 at night and then get up the next morning & go to work, while mom kept the farm running. I have great memories of our huge gardens and all the canning; jars and jars of beautiful food of all sorts lined up in the attic. I remember wash day, mom using a wringer washer, carrying out the tubs of water to the flower beds, lines of clothes flapping in the breeze. I remember watermelons and neighbors and herding cows with my bike. I remember picking & shelling black-eyed peas and digging potatoes. I remember homemade sausage & hog butchering. My mom always baked cakes, cookies and pies for everything. School fairs and fund raisers, Church bazaars and bereaved families. My dad prized her baking so highly he would ask which was hers and bid on it at the auctions and fundraisers, rather than take home an inferior product. Mom was a "room mother" who supplied treats and chaperoning for school field trips. She was a member of the Ladies Aid Society at Church. In those days, the Church Trustees kept up the wood supply for the Church heater and did repairs, and the Ladies Aid did the work of cleaning, altar preparation, and feeding the workers. My mom is 88. Men in their 60's come up to her and say "Do you still cook like you used to?". They were teenage field hands in the summers and would eat at our table. There was company every weekend we weren't going to someone else's house, and you had to feed them, or take food. Her fried chicken was special, too. I remember huge raised doughnuts on winter Saturdays. And I still love tapioca pudding, though it's much easier to make these days. There are many other facets to my mom. She worked hard to have beautiful flowers. I could never feel at home anywhere without plants. She helped raise her grandchildren. She loves animals, and passed that on to all of us. I look at the world in a different way because of my mom. Happy Mother's Day, Mom! --------------A9BF2F43D2710C9D3F274C5C--

    3. Hi all, I am back from my wonderful trip, & wow what a great time we had!!! While I was away, I was thinking what we could do for a project, & especially for Mother's Day. Since we all had a mother, (I hope!!) let's celebrate this honored day by telling stories of our Mom, Grandmas, Aunts, or any other special woman in our life. Was she a great cook? Was she a war hero? Did she save every single paper you did in school, or maybe she was a school teacher? Maybe she stayed at home all day, & was a June Cleaver to the neighborhood, or you might have lived in the Koolaid house, where all the neighborhood kids gathered? Let's hear some stories, ok? 3. You are so right about errors on others information. A distant cousin was searching our line as it was of interest. He posted my aunt as dead. Well she is 92 and still a great lady. I had given him her birth date and he looked and found a lady with the same name and same year dead in 1977 (not the birth month and day I told him.). She died in the town my aunt was born in. Well for goodness sakes my aunt lived there for only a few years never to return. Also it looks like he looked up her death information on her maiden name. Duhhh! (I have been guilty of forgeting that one also) I did let him know - We all make mistakes. And the farther we go back the easier it is to do it. I have lucked out and found a lot of great clues to search and what I might not want to search on the web. Some things to let me know that this family with the same name in the same county is not mine. That kept me from spending hours on the wrong line. Quinta

    2. I have received excellent replies to my query regarding lack of documentation and misinformation this afternoon. The consensus is that any gedcom or search site [i.e. Ancestry, etc.] is a STARTING POINT which provides clues. We must do our own research from there and be responsible for seeing that we do not deliberately post misinformation for others. We must also be leary of any information we receive from these sites or from well meaning relatives or even from published material until we have proven it ourselves. Voila!

    3. I have been very appreciative of all the information found on the internet, good, bad or different. It is a clue, at least, and something to "consider". I don't think additional restrictions would accomplish anything except restricting the amount of information available. I started my genealogy by taking a basic course. Three things stuck in my mind: 1. Don't be surprised at anything you find 2. Don't assume anything, but search for documentation 3. Document, document, document! And even then, be careful of what you find -- after all, documentation is dependent upon someone and people do make mistakes. At the same time, much documentation is dependent upon information given the documentor by someone else, e.g., census info. You get conflicting info even there. Caveat Emptor. Happy Hunting! Darrell ---- Original Message ----- > Dear Fellow Researchers... > > Throwing this out to all of you to get your opinions..let me hear from you. > > There is so much misinformation on Ancestry, Family Tree Maker, Kindred Konnections, Rootsweb and elsewhere; mostly in submitted gedcoms. I have to admit that I was guilty of same when I first began my genealogy work. I learned the hard way. Therefore, I do not post gedcoms on any of the above.
