Good. This is an incredible site. Wish other states had the kind of info they have. Anybody with VA ancestors are lucky to have them. I do not believe there is another state in America with another accessible on-line base like this. Hi, again, Dave........... I wrote to the historian I mentioned, previously....unfortunately he had no info for you..........however he did tell me that in the time period you wrote about, there was about 1 murder a week in Bosque Co, (according to Austin newspaper) ! You may want to check microfilm for prominent area newspapers........and you could also write a note to LaDawn Garland.... garland@htcomp.net ......she has researched old newspapers in Bosque Co....... One other place you might check, also.....the Bosque Co Genweb site, maintained by Bettie Woods.........there are various categories on the site for historical info, even old newspaper items from Bosque Co News and other Bosque Co newspapers....... http://www.rootsweb.com/~txbosqu2/ .............the search engine on main page of site is very helpful........ Good luck! Suzy
Dave - J. T. Vaughan is also buried in Old Rock Church cemetery. He ran a country store and was robbed and murdered in 1878. He's buried just to the left when you go into the cemetery. Don't know anymore than that. Family legend has it that William H. Gallaway (a veteran of the Civil War) was murdered by a neighbor when he went to retrieve a plow he had loaned the neighbor. The copy of the family story I have says that "Billy" was well respected and much loved in the neighborhood and his neighbors were so much alarmed at his murder that they formed a posse and chased down the murderer 'like a mad dog' and 'killed him like a rattlesnake'. Texas talk sure is colorful ain't it? An oldtimer in Waco in the 1940's told a family member (Mary Selman Gallaway Dodson) that he had ridden in the posse that made sure justice was done for Billy many long years before. Billy is buried in Rock Church Cemetery next to an infant son. Billy married Sally Barnett about 1869 or 1870 (conflicting sources) and had a son and two daughters before his untimely death. One daughter Laurie lived out her life in Waco and had two sons and daughter Annie Laurie who also lived in Waco in the late 1950's. I do not yet know Laurie's married name nor her son's names. Billy was an older brother of Rev. Robert V. Gallaway, ME Church South, whose descendants to this day populate Waco and thereabout. R.V. died at home in Aquilla in 1911 and was buried in Walnut Springs. I'd like to correspond with anyone related to these Gallaway men or anyone doing research on Texas Frontier Justice. Hi all, I'll be updating our site soon--kind of gotten behind there, as I've done a lot of playing this summer. We'll start some projects soon, one of those being listing cemeterie by towns. Many folks will go to Beautiful Bosque, & want to visit all the cemeteries located in & near Valley Mills, or Kopperl, & this will make it eaiser for them. More on that later--hopefully this next week. A fella named Mark sent this to me, I thought someone might be interested in this item on ebay. I am, but can't get my info to work--maybe it expired???
