Ms. O'Lene Stone, District Director of Congressman Lamar Smith's San Antonio office, called me this afternoon, to follow-up Lamar's promise to put pressure on the City to do something about the disgraceful state of the Alamo Masonic Cemetery. Ms. Stone said: #1. The Masons and the Parks Department are now in negotiations to turn the Alamo Masonic Cemetery over to the City of San Antonio, if I didn't already know. It would take a few months. I said I knew, and it wasn't a done deal, and why so long, and why can't the Masons clean up the cemetery NOW, with some of the $150,000 in the Cemetery Fund? Ms. Stone said: #2. The City of San Antonio wants the $150,000. That's what is in negotiation. Surely I wasn't asking Congressman Smith to put any more pressure on them, that would be considered politically something, I can't remember the exact word but I think he could go to the pokey. (Which would be ironic, he might end up being one of the prisoners that helps clean up the cemeteries :) I said that was unacceptable. Lamar needs to act as a Texan, not a Congressman, and complain to every Mason he knows. She said she knew a Mason she would tell him. I said I voted for Lamar not her and I wanted to talk to Lamar. When I told her there were over 40 CSA vets there, Ms. Stone said: #3. Oh we already know that, the City historians were already working very hard researching the cemetery. Hmmm....I need to add those City Historians to my NEGLECTED Alamo Masonic Cemetery Task Force List, start sending them my stuff direct to make sure they haven't missed any of it. By this time I could tell the conversation was not going as Ms. Stone had anticipated. If anyone would like to urge our Congressman to bring his rake and help us clean up the Cemetery, Ms. Stone's number is 210/824-6228 according to my cell phone. Sarah p.s. This is a great list. I had no idea I would find so many descendants here!
