>>Could someone explain the history of the Alamo Masonics and who they were? >>Also, did the Alamo Masons have a list of persons buried in the Alamo >>Masonic Cemetery? Not so much the exact burial location, but a list of >>everyone who was buried in the Cemetery.<< Ron According to their website: http://www.alamo.tx-mm.org/ ALAMO LODGE No. 44, AF&AM, was chartered on January 15, 1848,, by the Grand Lodge of Texas. This lodge is a fraternal organization that admits, makes, and passes Freemasons according to the Constitution and Laws, and Edicts of The Grand Lodge of Texas, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons. Its goals are to advance the moral and social interests of its membership; to foster good citizenship, honest industry and upright living; to cultivate the exercise of charity in its best and broadest sense; to assist the widows and orphans of its deceased members; to stimulate friendship, harmony and brotherly love, and generally to promote, in its own way, the happiness of mankind --- it is a Fraternity of good men, linked together by honorable and indissoluble bonds, to accomplish these noble purposes, eschewing all interests in factional politics and sectarian religion and free from the dictation of both. There are 220 members according to the website. They meet every 2nd Wednesday at 7PM. That's tomorrow night, I wish I was allowed in so I could tell them what I think of them, invite them to take a tour of the graves of all the dead Masons they have turned their backs on. The Masons have not answered my requests for a list of burials. In 1982, the SAGHS did a survey, and you can find it at: http://www.angelfire.com/folk/alamo_masonic_cem/index.html (if it won't come up, I will post the list) They commented that the survey was done of existing markers, and many were missing, but they gave no complete list. "Strangers' Row" is now missing many more stones. I've taken their list, and with the help of Rootswebbers who write in, have identified the following notables, more each day. I'm making up bios on each, and have photographed them. We are now identifying over 40 as CSA vets. I walked the entire cemetery for other vets noted on gravestones. This is just a partial list of residents: Frost (we all know who they are) Menger (them too) Meusebach (Mr. Meusebach founded Fredericksburg and made the peace treaty with the Indians) Kampmann (paved the streets with mesquite blocks, and involved in the Menger Hotel) Herff (began the first hospital in San Antonio) Onderdonk (famous regional artist) Cotton, Smith, Schmeltzer, Jenkins (all members of Terry's Texas Rangers) Newcomb (Texas Secretary of State) Van Riper (Texas Ranger & 3 Chiefs of Police in the family buried here) Ham (came to Texas with Jim and Rezin Bowie) Huth (involved in the colonization of Castroville) Sinclair (wrote the Eyes of Texas) Driscoll (saved the Alamo for goodness sake!!) Smith (daughter of Erastus "Deaf" Smith) Fisk (served in the Army of Texas from 1836 to 1837)
