As to getting the obituaries for you that was done through my on-line access to the Historical Newspaper Collection. Depending on time period I am often at times able to search from home. Speaking of obituaries there was one for Isaac's wife but it gave no clues about her or her family. Husband, children or any information about siblings were mentioned. Only that she too was buried in Mission Park Cemetery. Let me know if I can be of any additional help to you. Thanks .... Is there anyone on this list that has access to obituaries. I am trying to locate one for John Butler Adam Conover born 30 Aug 1973 in Bexar County. He married there and had two children, boys I think. According to the SSDI he died 16 Jun 2002 and I was told it was an auto accident. My thank in advance. Don
I'm looking for clues about a San Antonio resident (moved there about 1892) who was a member of the Association of Texas Pioneers. I'm not familiar with the organization. Do they retain histories (When the member came to San Antonio, personal information etc.) of individual members? Phyllis Solter
Thanks to those that replied to my request on viewing subject items and possible genealogical research locations... My July trip should be very successful, Harold Wilkinson
The best place to find City Directories and other reference material in San Antonio is the Downtown Main Library. They have a wonderful Genealogy Department located on the 6th floor. There are hundreds of records located there. The library collection include their microfilm collection where you will find City Directories, all the old San Antonio Newspapers dating back to the 1800s, Census records, Texas Death Index and many many more resources. It is a must place to visit when you come here to San Antonio for your research. Another place to visit is the San Antonio Genealogical Library located on Melissa Dr. and Blanco Road in North Central San Antonio about a half mile north of Loop 410 off Blanco Road. You will find some records there. The library is open on selected days and hours. Hope you enjoy your visit to our beautiful city. Have fun researching. Joan, Do you have a death date for Henry Singleton? What was your source of information for his burial In City #7? If he died between 1890 & 1976 you may find a digital image of his death certificate on http://pilot.familysearch.org. City #7 has been in serveral places . It was located in what is now downtown San Antonio. Along about 1911, city fathers saw land values increasing and decided to move the poor house farther away & sell the property. ( You can find that property location on Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps) Rather than move the burials next to it, they simply took down the markers. A reporter for a local paper got hold of the story and published names and stories of some of the people buried there. There was such a hue and cry that the city was forced to move the cemetery. They did so, to one corner of Pittman Sullivan Park. I don't believe the burials were re- marked, because over the years the city "forgot" the burials were there and in the 1940s St. Gerard Church bought this property to build a new high school. When foundation excavaton began about 1946, they found bones. These bones were "placed in a box" and removed to an unknown location, possibly Stinson Airfield where there was another pauper cemetery. Most of the burials remained on the now St. Gerard property. There were over 2500 of them. The first book of 1000 went missing before 1911. The 2nd book, or a portion thereof was recently found at San Jose (formerly City #8.) Those names are now being extracted by the San Antonio Genealogical and Historical Society (www.rootsweb.com/~txsaghs2) . The 1911 article was reprinted in the Society's journal Our Heritage a couple of years ago. Knowing his death date may help with his burial location. There are no markers. As it is owned by the City of San Antonio, it keeps city hours, M-F,8-4:30. SA is Central time. SJ is where the master record of all burials are kept. You can call the city of San Antonio for the number. Believe they are governed by City of SA Health Dept. Wish I could help you more. As to the headstone, SJ could give the grave number, etc. You would have to personally find it. The city owns also large cemetaries on East Houston St, a good distance e of East Houston St & IH 37. Best wishes. I need info on where my gmother was buried. They gave me that over the phone. Your best choice is to call them, and go out there. I would call the City of SA first.
