    1. [TXBEXAR] Requesting obituary look-up/info on family of Ota Lee NASH of San Antonio, TX, , please.
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: cantorjoeocho Surnames: Nash,Ford Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.texas.counties.bexar/2727/mb.ashx Message Board Post: She was my grandmother's best friend. My grandmother lost my grandfather in 1964 after nearly 45 years of togetherness. My grandmothr and Mrs. Nash shared a house on Mistletoe Ave. in San Antonio,TX while my grandmother worked civil service at Fort Sam Houston,Texas and she worked retail at the Junior Miss store. Mrs. Nash was also a widow. Her husband was Pete Nash and I think he worked in advertising sales at the old San Antonio Light newspaper in San Antonio,Texas. He probably died in the late 1940s or 1950s. I am not sure whether or not Pete was a nickname or his real name. Mrs, Nash had two grandchildren that I knew about and they were Carol Ann Nash and a young man nicknamed "Skeet" -- I don't know his real name. There MAY have been another granchild but the only ones I remember are Carol Ann and Skeet. I can't remember the name of Mrs. Nash's son but I think he was in the service. His wife was named Barbara and she was a registered nurse and I can't remember if she was in the U.S. Army at Fort Sam Houston or if she was a civilian employee at a military hospital. Barbara Nash remarried a military officer surnamed FORD and I can't remember the name of the military service he was in--I think he was a colonel but he might have made it to general. SO she would have been known as Barbara Ford. Mr. Nash gained a stepson named John or Jon Ford who was a TV news reporter in Austin,Texas I believe. I don't remember meeting anyone else in the family. The information on Ota Lee Nash is as follows: OTA L NASH Feb 1904 15 Apr 1992 78229 (San Antonio, Bexar, TX) I don't know where she was born or where she is buried now or what happened to the members of her family. I think she was born on the same day of the month as my grandmother who was Ruth K. Schmidt who died in 1979 and is inurned in the family crypt in Greenwood Cemetery in New Orleans, Louisiana. If you have information on this family or can do an obituary lookup on Mrs. Nash -- IF she had one in the local newspaper, please advice. She might be interred with Pete Nash in the Fort Sam Houston Cemetery or not. THANK YOU FOR ANY AND ALL INFORMATION! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [TXBEXAR] Charles Ray, b. Feb. 1858
    2. CHARLES RAY
    3. My Great Grandfather Charles Ray was born in San Antonio in 1858. There is no information in our family history that tells who Charles Ray's parents, brothers, or sisters were.  He never spoke of them. Facts: He seems to have disappeared for 31 years before he participated in the Oklahoma Land Run on April 22, 1889 and homesteaded in Meridian, OK.  He married Ida Burnison and they had three children, James, Jesse, and Ella were born in Guthrie.  In about 1900, Charles was in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and took a homestead there.  In 1916, he returned to Mulberry, Kansas and buried his wife in the Mulberry Cemetery.  His two sons deserted the Canadian Army in 1916 and moved to Kansas when their mother died.  Ella married in Canada and remained there.  After burying his wife in Mulberry, Charles returned to Guthrie, Oklahoma where he died on February 22, 1946. His Death Certificate indicates that he was born in San Antonio. This Death Certificate is about all I have to go by.  Charles Ray's descendant tree is a big one. I've added over 4,000 names to my ancestors and cousins but after 40 years of searching through genealogy records, I can't seem to get past "Charles Ray, b. 1858, San Antonio." I have spent years writing family history and searching through the wrong families for clues  Seems there were at least 4 Charles Ray boys born in 1858.  The Charles Ray b. 1858 in Granbury is buried in Granbury, Texas. The Charles Ray b. 1858 in WIlliamson/Bell county is buried in Belton, Texas. The Charles Ray b. 1858 in Overton is buried in Rusk County, Texas. My Charles Ray b. 1858 in San Antonio is buried in Guthrie, Oklahoma. I am stumped.  I have no idea where to look in San Antonio or Texas to find birth information on my Charles Ray.  Any information or thoughts to help me will be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Charles W. Ray, Jr b. 1944

Attached is a copy of the obituary for Artie Spears Harris. Called the cemetery and found she is buried in Mission Park, Block 10C, Lot 127, Space 1. Cemetery says that she is buried alone and no other family members were beuried with her. The George N. Harris who died Mar 28, 1922 was not her husband for sure. He is listed in the Texas Death index as a C. J. Harris and his obituary listed him as a Captain Harris. Have attached his obituary just in case I'm wrong. 3. I know I have seen a posting regarding a cemetery that was established for these early settlers in South Texas, Bexar County specifically. Author: Megaloff Surnames: Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.texas.counties.bexar/2723.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Smith worked at Kelly AFB San Antonio Express-News - Saturday, April 30, 1994 Arthur L. "Smitty" Smith worked at the Special Weapons Directorate at Kelly AFB for 21 years. Smith began work at the department warehouse as a tractor-trailer operator in 1955 and was promoted to foreman in 1962. Supervising about 12 workers, he monitored the inventory of heavy equipment. His work was recognized with numerous awards, including one for suggesting a new lifting part that saved the base $1,000. Smith, 72, died Tuesday of liver cancer diagnosed just three weeks ago. "He passed away peacefully. He didn't have any pain on his face," said his son, Chester Arthur Smith. He said his father was hospitalized for the first time with the illness that claimed his life. "He was never sick throughout his lifetime," the son recalled. Smith was born Sept. 14, 1921, in Canton, Ill., to Chester A. Smith and Gertrude Spiker Smith. He was raised in a farming community in Blandinsville, Ill., where he went to grade school. Smith was proud of his youthful academic career, especially a certificate he received in 1930 for 100 perfect spelling lessons. Smith joined the Army Air Corps in 1941. He was a truck driver, hauling bombs and other supplies during World War II. He was honorably discharged at Fort Sam Houston on Nov. 16, 1945. He married Lenora Agnes Jenkins in March of 1943 and the couple had one son. They divorced after 18 years of marriage and later remarried before divorcing again. She died in 1971. Smith also was married to Ruth Smith and Melba Farris. Both unions ended in divorce. Smith worked in construction near Odessa, where he built pump stations. He also worked for Latex Construction Company, as a driver for the Atomic Energy Commission, and as a railroad carman. When Smith was about 50, he enrolled in a home course and received his GED in 18 months. "It made him really proud," his son said. "He completed it with good grades." After his retirement from Kelly AFB, Smith enjoyed growing tomatoes, okra, squash, peppers, radishes and beans. "He would work in the garden almost every day," his son said. "He lived a very full life. He is the greatest man I've ever known." In addition to his son, other survivors include two sisters, Kathryn Townsend of Davenport, Iowa, and Ardith Flynn of Richland, Mo.; a brother, Raliegh J. Smith of Jamaica, N.Y.; and one grandchild. Visitation is scheduled for noon Saturday. Funeral services are set for 9:30 a.m. Monday at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South. Burial will follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.area deaths obituary Page: 8F Record Number: 162438 Copyright 1994, 2002 San Antonio Express-News Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
