I have gotten more off-list response from this mailing list than any other, about 'my' cemetery as well as ones you are concerned about, so I thought I would pass along emails that would be pertinent and help others in their battles. Feel free to use any of my letters as examples for your own, and good luck! ----- Original Message ----- From: Sarah To: Annette Bethke [email protected] Virginia Nicholas [email protected] Cc: Jan Cortez Sent: Wednesday, June 08, 2005 11:47 AM Subject: Re: CHC for Bexar County? Thank you so much. I'm trying to get the sadly neglected Alamo Masonic Cemetery cleaned up. I have done a great deal of research on the residents with the help of the genealogists on Rootsweb, and want to pass this on to y'all as I complete them. I want to apply for a Historical Cemetery marker, I'm willing to pay for the marker itself once the cemetery is cleaned up. We need markers for individuals too, and maybe could pay for them out of the $150,000 Cemetery fund the Masons are turning over to the Parks Department, when/if they deed the property over. The Masons are NOT making any attempts now to clean up the cemetery. So far we know of the following...more every day...plus about 50 CSA vets... Fisk (served in the Army of Texas from 1836 to 1837) Frost (bank) Menger (hotel & soap factory) Meusebach (Mr. Meusebach founded Fredericksburg and made the peace treaty with the Indians) Onderdonk (famous regional artist) Cotton, Smith, Schmeltzer, Jenkins (all members of Terry's Texas Rangers) Newcomb (Texas Secretary of State) Van Riper (Texas Ranger) Ham (came to Texas with Jim and Rezin Bowie) Huth (involved in the colonization of Castroville) Smith (daughter of Erastus "Deaf" Smith) and with their own markers: Sinclair (wrote "The Eyes of Texas") Driscoll (saved the Alamo for goodness sake!) I have a presentation on Powerpoint, and these will be on the website at www.rootsweb.com/~txbexar2/alamomasonic.html . That was posted May 9. After I appeared on TV, the grass was partially cut Saturday May 14th. Now that the grass is cut, you can see damaged and broken tombstones everywhere. The Masons met with the City on May 23, and the Parks Dept has agreed to take it over when the Masons deed it over and give them the $150,000 in the cemetery fund. Let's hope that happens soon. The Masons are doing NOTHING to clean it up now. Oh, there was a State Historical Marker for the cemetery, but it was stolen. Once a fence gets put up (Tom Frost has been trying to donate one for years but the Masons have ignored him) and peripheral brush is cleared, theft should not be a problem. This is the ONLY neglected Cemetery in the Eastside Cemetery complex. One day one of the policemen drove by and we chatted. He was delighted that we were getting the cemetery cleaned up, and told me there was a plot in particular that was always a problem. A few weeks ago they found a man dead there, from a drug overdose. It is a popular spot for heroin addicts, and the ground always has balloons and needles. I followed him to the plot, and I was horrified. It was one of the few plots that are maintained by the family. The fact that the grass is always cut makes it a pleasant spot for drug addicts. Overgrown brush hides it from the street. Plots on each side are overgrown as well, with high bushes, so the Dewees plot can only be seen if you are standing directly in front of it. There are two overgrown bushes at each front corner, creating totally hidden spots on each side. That's where Baby Sara is. If you look closely at the ground you can see balloons. Baloons are actually those little colored balloons you buy for parties, but they fill them with cocaine, leave the used balloon on the ground, and the lawnmower must miss them. One was right at Baby Sara's headstone, where the overdose victim left it. We didn't see any needles in one corner where they usually were, he said often the next addict picks them up. The officer said the man died of the overdose on top of Baby Daughter Sara Gray's grave, his feet resting on her tombstone that said she lived only 3 days. His head was near near Caiaphas Ham, the pioneer who came to Texas with Jim Bowie and his brother Rezin. I thought he was putting me on. But I found the news story... Cemetery buffs find above-ground body Web Posted: 04/18/2005 12:00 AM CDT Vianna Davila Express-News Staff Writer A couple searching for the oldest graves they could find in an East Side cemetery stumbled across the body of an unidentified man Saturday evening lying next to a headstone. A historical marker for the grave of Alamo preservationist Clara Driscoll compelled Todd and Debra Girgus to stop in the Masonic Cemetery-Alamo Lodge in the 1700 block of East Commerce Street. They had been strolling for about 30 minutes in the cemetery, which contains the graves of San Antonio notables including the Menger and Frost families, when Todd Girgus spotted the body. At first, he thought the man was asleep. "We go into cemeteries because we're big history buffs, but we've never found one above ground before," he said. Girgus then called EMS from a cell phone. Investigators were awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause of death, said police Detective Robert Blanton. He said there were no obvious signs of foul play. He suspected the body had been in the location for less than two days. The deceased carried no identification. He wore a white shirt and tan slacks. Blanton said he believed the man was more than 50 years old. ***** The brush along the street is far too dense for me to cut, but the next day I chopped away all the brush that hid Baby Sara from view of the policemen.
Hi, Sarah Just to let you know, I e-mailed the mayor of SA. this evening. Can you get the newspapers to come out and take pictures? Embarress as many that way as you can. It is a long drive for me cause I live in northcentral Okla. And I understand how hard it is to fight "city hall" Been there, done that. The same thing is going on in New Mexico. Someone on the NMDEBACA-L is fighting the same fight. Check the archives there for more ideas. There should be a state cemetery board to contact. I don't remember what else was being done in NM. G. The Story Tellers We are the chosen. My feelings are in each family there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, To tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, Breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the story tellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called as it were by our genes. Those who have gone before cry out to us: Tell our story. So, we do. In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the ancestors you have a wonderful family, you would be proud of us? How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me? I cannot say. It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I and why do I do the things I do? It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference And saying I can't let this happen. The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up, Their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family. It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a Nation. It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us. That we might be born who we are. That we might remember them. So we do. With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence, Because we are them and they are us. So, as a scribe called, I tell the story of my family. It is up to that one called in the next generation, To answer the call and take their place in the long line of family storytellers. That is why I do my family genealogy, And that is what calls those young and old to step up And put flesh on the bones. [Author Unknown]

Could someone explain the history of the Alamo Masonics and who they were? Also, did the Alamo Masons have a list of persons buried in the Alamo Masonic Cemetery? Not so much the exact burial location, but a list of everyone who was buried in the Cemetery. Ron Hesdorff [email protected]

>>Could someone explain the history of the Alamo Masonics and who they were? >>Also, did the Alamo Masons have a list of persons buried in the Alamo >>Masonic Cemetery? Not so much the exact burial location, but a list of >>everyone who was buried in the Cemetery.<< Ron According to their website: http://www.alamo.tx-mm.org/ ALAMO LODGE No. 44, AF&AM, was chartered on January 15, 1848,, by the Grand Lodge of Texas. This lodge is a fraternal organization that admits, makes, and passes Freemasons according to the Constitution and Laws, and Edicts of The Grand Lodge of Texas, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons. Its goals are to advance the moral and social interests of its membership; to foster good citizenship, honest industry and upright living; to cultivate the exercise of charity in its best and broadest sense; to assist the widows and orphans of its deceased members; to stimulate friendship, harmony and brotherly love, and generally to promote, in its own way, the happiness of mankind --- it is a Fraternity of good men, linked together by honorable and indissoluble bonds, to accomplish these noble purposes, eschewing all interests in factional politics and sectarian religion and free from the dictation of both. There are 220 members according to the website. They meet every 2nd Wednesday at 7PM. That's tomorrow night, I wish I was allowed in so I could tell them what I think of them, invite them to take a tour of the graves of all the dead Masons they have turned their backs on. The Masons have not answered my requests for a list of burials. In 1982, the SAGHS did a survey, and you can find it at: http://www.angelfire.com/folk/alamo_masonic_cem/index.html (if it won't come up, I will post the list) They commented that the survey was done of existing markers, and many were missing, but they gave no complete list. "Strangers' Row" is now missing many more stones. I've taken their list, and with the help of Rootswebbers who write in, have identified the following notables, more each day. I'm making up bios on each, and have photographed them. We are now identifying over 40 as CSA vets. I walked the entire cemetery for other vets noted on gravestones. This is just a partial list of residents: Frost (we all know who they are) Menger (them too) Meusebach (Mr. Meusebach founded Fredericksburg and made the peace treaty with the Indians) Kampmann (paved the streets with mesquite blocks, and involved in the Menger Hotel) Herff (began the first hospital in San Antonio) Onderdonk (famous regional artist) Cotton, Smith, Schmeltzer, Jenkins (all members of Terry's Texas Rangers) Newcomb (Texas Secretary of State) Van Riper (Texas Ranger & 3 Chiefs of Police in the family buried here) Ham (came to Texas with Jim and Rezin Bowie) Huth (involved in the colonization of Castroville) Sinclair (wrote the Eyes of Texas) Driscoll (saved the Alamo for goodness sake!!) Smith (daughter of Erastus "Deaf" Smith) Fisk (served in the Army of Texas from 1836 to 1837)
Ms. O'Lene Stone, District Director of Congressman Lamar Smith's San Antonio office, called me this afternoon, to follow-up Lamar's promise to put pressure on the City to do something about the disgraceful state of the Alamo Masonic Cemetery. Ms. Stone said: #1. The Masons and the Parks Department are now in negotiations to turn the Alamo Masonic Cemetery over to the City of San Antonio, if I didn't already know. It would take a few months. I said I knew, and it wasn't a done deal, and why so long, and why can't the Masons clean up the cemetery NOW, with some of the $150,000 in the Cemetery Fund? Ms. Stone said: #2. The City of San Antonio wants the $150,000. That's what is in negotiation. Surely I wasn't asking Congressman Smith to put any more pressure on them, that would be considered politically something, I can't remember the exact word but I think he could go to the pokey. (Which would be ironic, he might end up being one of the prisoners that helps clean up the cemeteries :) I said that was unacceptable. Lamar needs to act as a Texan, not a Congressman, and complain to every Mason he knows. She said she knew a Mason she would tell him. I said I voted for Lamar not her and I wanted to talk to Lamar. When I told her there were over 40 CSA vets there, Ms. Stone said: #3. Oh we already know that, the City historians were already working very hard researching the cemetery. Hmmm....I need to add those City Historians to my NEGLECTED Alamo Masonic Cemetery Task Force List, start sending them my stuff direct to make sure they haven't missed any of it. By this time I could tell the conversation was not going as Ms. Stone had anticipated. If anyone would like to urge our Congressman to bring his rake and help us clean up the Cemetery, Ms. Stone's number is 210/824-6228 according to my cell phone. Sarah p.s. This is a great list. I had no idea I would find so many descendants here!
This list is just of sections A-D. We are working on Sections 1-4. There are 50+ CSA vets in the Alamo Masonic Cemetery. I started out thinking there were 3 or 4. Since there are so many, I just turned the info over to the local Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV), there is no way I can do all of this myself. These names still need to be verified. Hopefully, the SCV can get replacement markers for missing and damaged stones. To locate these vets, I went thru all the tombstone inscriptions on the SAGHS list and pulled out the men in the right age bracket. Rayedene and Kathy, from the German-Texans List on Rootsweb volunteered to search the database at the National Parks Service. http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/ Thanks again to Rayedene for looking these vets up. She is working on Sections 3 &4, and Kathy is working on Sections 1 & 2. ***** Here are sections A thru D. (1 thru 4 to follow later) A,B,C,D = section, 2 = plot number. A-2 Walter T. C. Hi, if anyone is interested in helping me get a State Historic Cemetery designation for the sadly neglected Alamo Masonic Cemetery, please let me know. The Masons purchased this property in 1853. One of the earliest Masonic grounds in Texas, Alamo Masonic Cemetery contains the graves of some of San Antonio and Texas' founding families. It is the only cemetery that is neglected among 30 others in a 25-plus block area near the heart of downtown San Antonio. Go look at www.rootsweb.com/~txbexar2/alamomasonic.html . This is just a partial list of residents: Sinclair (wrote "The Eyes of Texas") Driscoll (saved the Alamo for goodness sake!) Smith (daughter of Erastus "Deaf" Smith) Fisk (served in the Army of Texas from 1836 to 1837) Frost (bank) Menger (hotel & soap factory) Meusebach (Mr. Meusebach founded Fredericksburg and made the peace treaty with the Indians) Onderdonk (famous regional artist) Cotton, Smith, Schmeltzer, Jenkins (all members of Terry's Texas Rangers) Newcomb (Texas Secretary of State) Van Riper (Texas Ranger) Ham (came to Texas with Jim and Rezin Bowie) Huth (involved in the colonization of Castroville) Thanks, Sarah Reveley San Antonio
Does anyone know how much a marriage record from 1943 can be obtained for from the Bexar county clerk? My parents married in Bexar county in 1943 and I would like to obtain a copy of the marriage record. Richard Foster Austin, TX

About the Ancestry.com online version of the 1930 census. I am told that much of the indexing was /is outsourced, and that the error rate is pretty high in the indexing. Just yesterday, I discovered that Ancestry.com has also used some of the published census indexes, which in the case of Texas in 1870 has some gross errors. See the paragraph regarding Uvalde.. However, in searching for a Williams family in Texas, I found the census-taker himself had left off the final s of the surname. This put the surname in an entirely different Soundex [index]. That is what my friend, who is more computer-saavy than I did. She said, Give me an unusual first name in the family. I provided such a given name, and the county, and yes, we spotted the family--in the right place, at the right time, with the right number of children but without the final s in the Surname.. My advice to any census-searcher: If you are certain WHERE the family lived, see if you can browse [either on film or online] the entire county. For San Antonio or other Texas cities in the 1930s this could be difficult. On film, it is somewhat easier. (I did this when I first started out. Before the Model-T Ford came along, you will probably spot cousins, aunts and uncles, and perhaps grandparents of the person you seek.) Always change the vowel when searching, and think of all the ways a census-taker might misspell, or the present-indexer could misspell. Another problem with indexes, even printed ones. I was searching for a German surname in Uvalde Co. and any other place in Texas. The surname was not that common in the 1870s. The printed 1870 census index indexes the surname with Upshur [not Uvalde] as the county. And this error is repeated in the online index for Ancestry.com. Garbage in [in this case unskilled or ignorant of geography help], garbage out. Of course, there are always hold-outs who avoided the census-taker, or were perhaps on a train or working on someone else's farm or ranch. In the 2000 census, in my punctuated-with-hills and canyons neighborhood, my neighbor, who had volunteered to take the census, said he found many holdouts!!! He had to make repeated calls, left notices, etc. Still, no results! If tax lists have been filmed for the time period when your ancestors lived in an area, or if there are city directories [as there are for San Antonio], use those as census substitutes. City directories were generally published every two years, and one can frequently find a family in such a city [not telephone] directory. I don't use CyndisList much any more, but I bet she has a link to Directories, or City Directories. The Family History Library at Salt Lake City has films or fiche of some city directories, but a public library near the place where your ancestor lived may produce some directories for you. (When the old Library in San Antonio was near the River, I used several city directories of San Antonio to track down my great-grandparents--the husband's occupation, his employer, his residence.) Some of us need to admit that we cannot always do the research ourselves--some professionals, particularly in the State where your ancestor lived may know of some oddball [to you and me] records. Court records, particularly in sparsely settled communities, can give you some fabulous stories. Murder, dirvorce, debt, orphans records, etc. And old newspapers, if still intact, or filmed, are wonderful. Good luck! E.W.Wallace
