The San Antonio Genealogical and Historical Society web pages for Bexar County Cemeteries gives detailed information on each of the cemeteries within Bexar County. http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Etxsaghs2/bexarcem.htm This includes: The name, When established The physical location Map information Where records can be obtained (if applicable) Any published data on the cemetery Extra notes An example is: _*Coker*_ – Est. by 1857 Location: 231 E North Loop Rd; just W of 281-N Records/Contact: James Autrey – (210) 490-4682. Owned by Coker Cemetery Ass’n, P.O. They are not connected. Only descendants of John Coker can be buried in the cemetery, which is private and can only be visited with permission. There are two historical markers, one for John Coker and one for Jeff Smith. In excellent shape in 1997. There are 86 cemeteries listed whose names fall between A and F in the alphabet. There are 76 cemeteries listed whose names fall between G and M in the alphabet. There are 105 cemeteries whose names fall between N and Z in the alphabet, and there are 7 cemeteries listed whose names are unknown. I saw a query yesterday, I believe, about African American burials. This list includes at least one cemetery whose name tells us there are African American burials -- _*Colored People’s Cemetery*_ est 1893. There are probably more.... Don't miss this resource. Please do not let this "fray" discourage your interest in this message board; also when reading of offers of help for cemetary clean-up, all the way from NY, I was so impressed with your selflessness in this offer! Consequently, I thought to myself, this petty bickering over a worthy project is going to turn people away for sure! We are supposedly civilized adults and all have an interest in our past history, which is the purpose of the message boards/mailing lists! Sarah's passion is to be commended! I have been trying to research the San Antonio Library in regards to my grandmother's family which was Flores. I am not familiar with that side but was told a story that was handed down to my cousins and I was wondering if any of you have heard anything about it. I was told that my great great grandfather was thought to be the mayor (alcalde) of San Antonio at the time of the seige of the Alamo in Mar 1836. What I was told is that he was murdered by being poisoned to keep him from going to Washington on the Brazos to sign the Independence papers. His last name was Flores but I do not know his first. I know he had an infant son named Ysidor (Ysidore, Ysidoro or Isidore) Flores who his father gave to a family in Medina TX, by the name of Cannon, to raise when he found out that his life was in danger (have not found them either). I checked the list of Alcaldes of San Antonio from 1731 to 1836 and found that Jose Angel Navarro was Mayor in 1835 and Francisco Antonio Ruiz was up to Feb 1836 and there is a gap from Feb to 6 Apr 1836 when Jose Maria Salinas took office. In researching the Bexar Archives (1717-1836), A Name Guide Compiled and edited by Adan Benevides, Jr, I found on pgs 326-327 a Francisco Flores. One of his many entries (and his last one also) was "Elected Alcalde of Bexar 2/2/1836" I am trying to find out if there is any info on what happened to him or anything about his family. The Isidor (Ysidoro) Flores that is my great grandfather was born 4 Apr 1835 in TX and died 15 Apr 1897 in San Antonio. He married Francisca Hernandez 28 Sep 1854 in San Fernando Cathedral and later married Panfilla Gil on 23 Oct 1882. He is suppose to have been a wealthy land owner with land both in Medina and Bexar County and reportedly sold mules to the Army. I found where he purchased 160 acres of land on the Medio Creek in Dec 1882 and I was told that his children by Panfilla Gil were born on this ranch he had in Macdonna TX (Bexar County). If anyone has any info, I would greatly appreciate it. Emily Russell

I was in the Funeral Business for many years, and the most disgraceful cemetery in all of the cemeteries in the old San Antonio Cemeteries is The Masonic Cemetery. Shame on you, and the Masons, for the disgraceful condition of the resting grounds of many of the heroes you honor in your speeches. I challenge you to just once walk onto those grounds and not realize why my sister Sarah is so incensed with horrible plight of the final resting place of these people to whom we owe so much. All of your Brothers to whom you pay so much homage are laying under a cover Of debris, needles, drug paraphenalia, and condoms. Can you turn your back on this situation. All it would take would be one or two days of volunteer work by your lodges to restore this wonderful site to its former grandeur. My sister has absolutely nothing to gain by her efforts to clean up this Historical site, yet she has become a pariah in your eyes. I do not ask you to respond to me, but I do ask you to visit the site of one of the oldest and grandest Masonic cemeteries in the State of Texas, possibly the United States, and let me know if you do not come away with a sick feeling in your gut. I am not am Mason, I also have nothing to gain, but I am a San Antonian who Is proud of his city, and it sickens me to see the condition of this truly Historical and majestic area. My name is Kay Richter and I am a freelance reporter with the Wilson County News. I would like to meet with you and discuss the state of the cemetery, as well as any restoration projects that you are helping to organize. I feel that an article will raise attention to the issue and perhaps be able to find funding for such projects. You can reach me on my cell phone at: 210-***-*** or by this e-mail address. thank you, Kay Richter ----- Original Message ----- From: Sarah To: Kay Richter ; James A. Rodriguez ; Alamo Masonic Cemetery Task Force Sent: Friday, June 10, 2005 6:59 PM Subject: Re: cemetery in disrepair Hi Kay, Thanks for writing! I will be happy to get with you. The latest word is that James Rodriguez with the deMolay, and manager of the Scottish Rite Temple, is working with the Alamo Masonic Lodge #44 to set up a Work Day. He said he was happy to coordinate some volunteers from the 27 local Masonic Lodges and their youth groups if there is an organized effort to clean up the cemetery. James has said he cannot speak for "the Masons", only do his best to encourage people to volunteer for this project and is hopeful that we can get a good response. As you know, there are Wilson, Karnes, and Atascosa County Masons in the cemetery, so perhaps we can mention that to the Masonic organizations covered by your paper. James has been very helpful, and I am encouraged by his enthusiasm. Perhaps when he gets back with me after meeting with Alamo Lodge, and seeing what interest there is with the deMolays and the other Masonic Lodges, I can have more details for you. My next project? We have a bit more to do, but the genealogists that I have met online because of the Alamo Masonic Cemetery are working towards getting a Texas Historic Cemetery Designation for this one, State Historical Markers for the more notable residents, VA markers to replace the ones for the missing and damaged veteran markers, and replacement of the stolen State Historical Marker for the cemetery. THEN, I want to get with the Fairview Cemetery Association to see if they are interested in getting their cemetery designated as a Texas Historic Cemetery. About 12 years ago I helped record all the graves with the Extension Homemakers, and now that there is a Historic Cemetery program, we need to get it designated. There's another cemetery in Floresville that needs some attention as well...the Canary Islanders. I'll call you this weekend. Thanks again! Sarah Reveley "The Cemetery Lady"

I do the official Bexar Co. TXGenWeb site. The web address is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txbexar2/ Notice the *2* at the end. It has a *2* because the old site was not turned over when the I became county coordinator. I have a new site and all my pages will have ~txbexar2 in them. I do not have anything to do with this site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txbexar/main.htm It is the old site and I have no control of what is on the site. I believe that Robert Garcia, I think that was the last coordinator, turned this site over to some one with the San Antonio Library, who never had time to update it and the site was turned over to me. I was never given the password and the site remains as it was. I cannot change a thing on that website. I am not making it appear that pages that belonged to the San Antonio Genealogy Society, were mine. These are not my pages. I am not *hijacking* or pirating their material. And as an aside, I am not the list administrator of this list. Jan Cortez

I just checked my notes and saw that there are black burials at the Cantu and Griffith Cemeteries. I was hoping to find a listing online somewhere.. I thought I had a one point. Now I can't find it. My grandfather -- Ernest Webster used to work for the Karotkin family who ran a very reputable Furniture Store in downtown San Antonio. I've read that the Karotkins were early business founders of San Antonio TX. Ernest was the owner of W & W Grocery located at F RF at 819 S. Pine in 1948. In 1951 he was a driver for Jorrie Furniture -- he lived at r RD 1 Box 359 Ditto for 1952-53 In 1954 he was still a driver for Jorrie Furniture and lived on RD1 Laguna Rd. I've been told that Ernest lived outside of San Antonio and owned 38 acres of land. He wife was Julia Vaughan who died in 1950. Ernest and his wife adopted my mother Julia in 1945. There are mysteries such as Ernest being her real father and Julia not her mother. I've been told my mother was in an orphanage... don't know anything about orphanages in San Antonio during the 40s. Ernest had a half brother named William Evans and a brother named Aaron Webster and Annie Lee. Ernest was born August or 1895-96. I believe he served in WWI. Another note: The Roselawn is sometimes mentioned as San Fernando #3 And a lost cemetery: France Garnes Cemetery, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas Not sure what is meant by Helotes Cemetery There is the Catholic Our Lady of Guadalupe Cemetery that might be called the Helotes Cemetery and not on the list: Zion Lutheran of Helotes Cemetery 1 and 2 (At one time called Helotes Community Cemetery) What a great joy typing them all up -- Perhaps others can add to the list. I agree with Ron about how shamefully some of us listers have treated Sarah. At times, I have unsubscribed from rootsweb lists--because I am vacationing, or because the lists just got downright boring!!! Why cannot others do that? I do think there might be some jealousy at Sarah's enthusiasm and her ability to put her energy where her mouth is. Those of us who have suffered San Antonio heat in the summer can certainly appreciate what it must take to clean up such a mess--especially in an area of town which my long-time San Antonio friend chided me for visiting a few years ago when I went to that area. She said that drug busts took place there all the time. Apparently, not enough arrests!!! E.W.Wallace a native Texan who has been in California for over 50 years!!
Oh, my, careful. No, she is probably being blocked by the administrator of the list. I don't think anyone else can do this. Everyone needs to remember that this cemetery is in the process of being transferred to (don't quote me, memory is bad sometimes) the city of SA. The Masons are very good people. I realize they have been lax in taking care of this cemetery but that does not make them bad people. This whole situation has gotten out of hand. Some of the blame should go on the city officials and the other officials that Sarah has tried to contact. If a private citizen had let their property go like this, they would have been fined. It is obviously being used by drug dealers and such. That shows apathy in a lot of places. It is a sad situation but can be remedied. I have not gotten a response from the Mayor's office yet. If enough people send POLITE e-mails to the right people, mayby more will be done sooner. Fighting about this is not doing any of us any good. And sure isn't getting the cemetery cleaned. We all care about genealogy or we wouldn't be here. And cemeteries are part of that or there would not be web sites for pictures of the headstones. There would not be listings for the cemeteries. Lets all work together on this. G. I have a question...I have tried unsubscribing 2 times now...from the individual list and from the digest list...so that I can use my new e-mail. I have changed my e-mail address to a new one as we are getting rid of the one that this messages are going to...and it is not working.... Anyone have any ideas what I should do now. Julee
