Looks to me as if it's still the same process... your deleting off subject materials. Probably it's best to stick to the way Rootsweb has structured the List; for exchange of genealogy information only. Not to promote a "cause" or have a "blow by blow" discussions about a subject unrelated to genealogy records or research. After all, it is their (Rootsweb's) List, we're only their guests. Good luck to all in their research. I'm trying to locate the burial location of Texas Supreme Court Judge Wesley B. Ogden, Who died in San Antonio on 6/15/1896. I've located an extensive report of his death on the front page of the San Antonio Express for that date but it did not give a place of internment. I can not find him listed in any of the Cemetery lists in the San Antonio public library. Anyone one have any ideas where he was buried.
I would think that these are pretty general occupations. As a lot of the people emigrating to the USA came from the British Isles, then they would have brought the same names with them. Later on they would have been changed and adapted by the people in the different areas. An example of this in England is the name for a plimsoll - not sure what you call them in the USA ! Primary school children still wear them here for PE. They are a canvas shoe, usually black, with laces or an elastic section on the top of the foot - fast disappearing as trainers take over. These are known as 'plimsolls' in the South and East, 'pumps' up here in the North and 'daps' in the West. This is the archives address that Adina found the occupations list on in March 2000 http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/TXBEXAR/ This is another list, with some of the oldest occupations that appear on Census. They can also help one work out household or farm items found on Wills. http://www.amlwchdata.co.uk/occupations.htm Simone. Adina wrote 12 June 2005 20:02 > Taking Simone's advice...I started looking in the archives. There is a message from Mar of 2000 that is a list of occupations. The reason I posted in the first place was to get help, and bring attention to the cause. I'm absolutely floored that so much irritation was caused by a few posts. I'm used to Rootsweb Lists with dozens of posts a day, sharing information and opinions. How do you think we learn anything, other than by sharing with one another? I have no control over the "avalanche" of subsequent posts created by the LA blocking me, and then AndyPandy unsubscribing me from all lists, but shouldn't that in itself tell you that something is amiss with the system, since the bulk of the posts were in my behalf? Obviously, you aren't on very many Lists if you think these postings were an "avalanche." Why in the world would I return to a sleepy little list like this with an "organized summary" for goodness sake. Did it occur to you that this is a living, breathing, ongoing battle, and I was sharing it as it happened, getting help with each blow? This is a totally new experience for me, and I needed help, and thankfully have gotten it from Listers who cared. Do you actually think I would return if the phantom List Administrator let me? Honey, what happened to the Texan in you? Do you actually think I would give you a nice tidy report, after my head has been bloodied (but unbowed) by the Masons and all of the small minded people such as yourself? No, I will give you exactly what I gave AndyPandy: Dear Bexar County Listers, I have been on this list for awhile and always hope to find something of interest since much of my family was originally from that area and I was born in San Antonio. I currently live in another state and work as the Collections (Artifacts) Manager at a historical institution, so the furor surrounding the Alamo Masonic Cemetery has been nothing if not compelling. Also, my great grandfather was a Mason. I have been following the story via the e-mail traffic since it began so have been able to sit back from afar and hopefully develop a fairly objective opinion on this issue. I think the consensus among most amateur genealogists would be that Ms. Reveley's efforts to restore the cemetery to its proper place in the city's history by cleaning it, maintaining it and recognizing it for its historical significance are certainly worthy of our admiration and support. I think the problems began when the e-mails became a dialogue (usually one-line messages) between individuals concernin! g the details of organizing the clean up and then, the trading of heated comments about the list, its purpose, Ms. Reveley, attitudes about cemeteries, etc. Whatever we think about the cemetery issue we need to remember some things, i.e. we are members of the Bexar County list that belongs to RootsWeb--they can administer it any way they see fit, even if we don't like it. Secondly, I believe that some people were frustrated because of the avalanche of e-mail (again, much of it unnecessary details); although some people may have unlimited e-mail capacity in their inboxes, that is not the case for everyone and the extreme number may have overextended some people's accounts. When I got to work this morning I had sixty unopened e-mails--fifty-eight of them from this list alone! I don't have an issue with capacity but I know some do and it would be a courtesy to cut down on the "one-liners" (and venting of anger via petty insults). Thirdly, the main purpose of the list is to exc! hange genealogical facts; we need to try and adhere to that when possi ble (I know I'm breaking that rule right now but this is the first time I've ever sent anything other than a fact query or response to a list). :) My suggestion would be that if the Administrator allows Ms. Reveley back on the list perhaps she could just send a daily or weekly (whatever works best) update on the progress of the Alamo Masonic Cemetery project. As a historian, I would love to know how it turns out and I think an organized summary of findings, actions taken, etc. would be far more effective than the bits and pieces we have been receiving. Good luck to everyone in their genealogical quests! Sincerely, Patricia in NC
Are you sure -- I will keep checking my German files. But I must note that with my Alsace Schott ancestors in Wittelshiem records, there were references to illegitimacy of one person that had it recorded at birth, marriage, and even at the death of the poor women. It was noted in Catholic Church records in pre 1900 records here as illegitimate. Was it only my ancestral Germans who didn't make a big deal of illegitimacy. I will have to research my German documents further to see if there are clues to illegitimacy. For instance, St. Louis Catholic records of my Great Grandparents illegitimacy states that he was "the child of" where the other children had the reference"legitimate child of". Just a thought. Since my English grandmother who immigrated to Texas with her parents and siblings in 1885 married a German (b. Bexar Co., Texas, born to two German immigrants), I have had occasion to study ways and means of conducting both English and German genealogy. In neither of these cultures--English and German--is illegitimacy said to be a big deal. One German expert (author, publisher, lecturer) started out his lecture, In Germany there is no such thing as illegitimacy. The pair did not get married until the bride was pregnant usually because one or both might lose their employment. A couple of English lecturers (authors, lecturers) have said essentially the same thing. In fact, because so many English girls were put *into service* [became servants], frequently the first child was conceived before wedlock. In one instance I know of, the first child came considerably before the bride's first marriage. It was explained that mothers did not prepare their daughters for the fact that the master of the household had *bed privileges*. Some of you scholars will know the French term for this. This thought was provoked by some correspondence between myself and Bob Schulz concerning some supposed dalliances of Bettina von Arnim. (Note the antics of nobility in England these days.) I am a fan of Masterpiece Theater (back when PBS was better funded that it is now). If you have NOT seen a rather recent movie called Gosford Park, see if you can find it at your video store. You may understand the behavior of some of the upper classes and the lower classes. (Is this being replicated in the United States these days? Not the pay differences between CEOs and their employees!) Back to Gosford Park - do a google.com search for this movie. Here is a brief description: Multiple storylined drama set in 1932, showing the lives of upstairs guest and downstairs servants at a party in a country house in England E.W.Wallace

List of occupations. There are a good many lists of occupations on the internet. Do a google.com search *list of occupations* For genealogists, CyndisList may be the place to start. (About the third one down the list of hits) Ah, yes, I have English cousins and I love to visit that country (when the dollar is in better shape than at present). We in the United States kind of speak the same language as our cousins in Great Britain!!! But not really!!! When my English cousin who is very tiny suggested I put on her *wellies*, I had no idea what she was referring to. She brought her rubber boots, very useful particularly in a rural area where she lives. (Do you know what a *fry breakfast* is?) My long-ago British ancestor was a gamekeeper, but if this occupation is known in the United States, I don't know about it. His ancestor before him was a ratcatcher [old parish record--useful occupation where grain was stored, as it is almost everywhere in England]. And *servant*--some old US censuses use that term for unemployed older adolescents, particularly female, it seems, but except for very wealthy households, servant is not used a good deal in US censuses. Dairymaid? Have you seen that in a US census? Tell me about it. A couple of years ago I was on a ferry boat from Isle of Man to the Lancaster area. I hardly understood one word among the other passengers--different dialects all over England!!! (And in parts of the US--my husband who is hard of hearing, asked me to translate the language of a waitperson in a restaurant on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The poor girl was sorely embarassed--she could not help the way she had been brought up!) Cherish the differences!!! And use google.com a LOT. E.W.Wallace
I got nowhere near 60 emails from this list today or any other day, so I don't know why you did. Sarah got treated the way she did because someone of supposed importance wanted her out. Some people in charge of that cemetary are embarassed. She doesn't care about outing them, she cares about the lost people in there. I have learned that too many of the people associated with this list care only about who THEY are looking for. I didn't subscribe here because I have deceased in TX, as far as I know I don't. I am interested in the history of San Antonio and was delighted to read Sarah's posts and wanted to help make that cemetary nice again. Didn't want to blame anyone...all she & we wanted to know was who to contact about letting a team in there to clean up and mark graves. I still don't really comprehend the reaction some people had to all this. Takes less than a second to delete an email, I deleted all your personal geneology posts that meant nothing to me.....why couldn't y'all do the same and not attack someone's enthusiasm & good deed doing? Oh well, not everything's meant to be understood. Take care all & good luck. M. Ross NY In a message dated 6/13/2005 12:30:07 P.M. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding where I might obtain more info. on the burials in Trevino Cemetery off the old Corpus Christi road (near Elmendorf). I am seeking info. that would help me to determine the burial site of Clemente and Martha (Moegelin) Trevino and to determine the names of their children. I have a list of the burials in this cemetery and am almost certain that Martha M. Trevino (May 31, 1868 - Dec. 5, 1952) is the person for whom I am searching but there is no listing for her husband, Clemente Trevino. I think there is a possibility that John C. Trevino (Jan. 10, 1890 - Nov. 5, 1939), Isabel T. Borrego (Jul. 7, ? - Jul. 13, 1978) and Bertha T. Rymers (Reiman?) Oct. 23, 1911 - May 3, 1973) - all buried in the Trevino Cemetery - are some of the children of this couple but I am not sure. Since I have not been able to locate an obituary on either of them I think that I need to locate a record of their burial or, perhaps, a record from the Catholic Church in Elmendorf in order to prove, or disprove, the info. that I have. Also, I as still searching for the burial site of Bertha Ellerman (1865 - Feb. 17, 1952). I think that she was probably buried next to her husband, G. Henry Ellerman in the "OLD" Lutheran Cemetery but there is no headstone. They had no children so it is likely that no one took care of the detail of having a headstone placed for her. I would appreciate any assistance and, or guidance, that anyone could provide to help me locate these people. Carroll Warschak Waco, Texas

Any complaints about Sarah being blocked should be sent to the rootsweb administrator Andrew at [email protected] He was the one who sent her the email about her being banned.
Thanks for letting us know exactly what Sarah is being accused of . I did ask the list administrator that question, but they havnt replied yet. Am I missing somthing here though? I thought I was on the Mailing list for Bexar County, shouldnt that make the topic for this list Bexar County? Isnt the Alamo Masonic Cemetery in Bexar County? If this List has a specific topic that we must adhere to, could somebody please tell me what it is, if it isnt Bexar County/Texas/Cemeteries/ Genealogy? Getting even more puzzled by the minute, Simone. PS People only tend to badger when they are feeling desperate, when being polite means being ignored. But gravestones and markers are steadily being lost throughout the world through neglect, the weather and by vandals. Surely each and every one of them with their little bit of often invaluable history is worth saving, and the quicker the better?
