They are/were my grandparents (great great great?) My mother's mother, Esther Campbell Brown, was the daughter or granddaughter of one of their children. I remember as a child being taken to the Alamo and shown a picture of John Smith ( a redhead as my mother and all three of her children are/were!) and being told about his job as the "Messenger" of the Alamo. I've heard rumor of his picture being taken down from the Alamo because he did not actually die there, but he is my great great great (great?) grandfather. So I know more about him than about the Curbelo side of things. I do know a little bit about their coming to San Antonio in the first trip and being the first settlers but I don't know much more. I also know Maria remarried after Smith passed away, but I don't know anything about who she married or when and who that clan is. Also, I have only been to San Antonio once, as a small child, and visited my Great Aunt Lida Campbell while there. She was my grandmother Esther's sister and they were from San Antonio. I know I must have hordes of relatives from both sides and would love to know more about this amazing family. I thank you for any help you can offer. Suzanne

There was a post about the immigration lists at Castle Garden in New York, the predecessor of Ellis Island. I would like to add my two cents worth about other US ports. I do not know whether these lists are online or not, as some of the online materials are too late to help me with my *immigrant* problems. My English family who came to Frio Co., TX ca 1885, came in through Philadelphia. I found this information with my great-grandfather's land records, posted in Frio Co. Recently, I found the family on the immigration records newly posted to Ancestry.com, which my local Family History Center has on the computer, and now I know on which ship they came, and a few other items of interest. Some of my Germans who landed in San Antonio came in through New Orleans ca 1852, and I just happened to find that list in one of the early volumes of Germans to America, a growing collection of volumes. (Are these at the downtown San Antonio Public Library--the genealogy section?) And then there is my Ulster Irishman who came from Tennessee to help fight the Texas Revolution and who settled in Victoria Co. He was on the Kentucky frontier in 1820 in time to get married to a lady born in North Carolina. I cannot identify him on any list I have discovered so far, because he had a VERY common name. Could he have come in through Baltimore or Philadelphia? By the way, I noted on the ships list for my Germans that many of the other passengers on the ship Olbers stated their destination was St. Louis. Doubtless they were going on another boat ride!!! I am forwarding the following posting from another list to which I subscribe. This may be of interest to anyone who had ancestors immigrate through New York City from 1830 through 1890. Sue Tilleman List Administrator ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cheryl Rothwell" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, September 12, 2005 6:31 PM Subject: Castle Garden Immigration Database. This is from Dick Eastman regarding Castle Garden, an immigration processing center from 1830 until 1890. It's database is now online at http://castlegarden.org . This is a shortened version of the Dick Eastman article. I did some searching and found some probables. However, this site is a bit glitchy. It tells you here are 10 results but you only 6. If you reload the page you MAY see more. However, it is 60 more years than were available before. Ellis Island seems to receive all the publicity for immigrants arriving in New York City. Many people do not realize that Ellis Island did not begin operations until 1892. More than 73 million Americans can trace their ancestry to immigrants who arrived in New York City prior to that year. From 1830 until 1890, these new arrivals first stepped ashore at Castle Garden in lower Manhattan. The site of Castle Garden remains as one of the oldest public open spaces in continuous use in New York City. American Indians fished from its banks, and the first Dutch settlers built a low stone wall with cannons as a battery to protect the harbor and New Amsterdam. The stone wall was later converted to a street that is now the well-known financial center called Wall Street. The Castle Garden immigration processing center started operation in 1830. By 1890, the arriving throngs were overcrowding the center, and there was no room to expand the facility since the ocean and the city surrounded it. After reviewing several possible sites, the United States government selected Ellis Island for the establishment of a new federal immigration center for New York. On the island, it would be easier to screen and protect the new immigrants before they proceeded out onto the streets of Manhattan. Castle Garden processed its last immigrant in April 1890. After the closing of Castle Garden in 1890, immigrants were processed at an old barge office in Manhattan until the opening of the Ellis Island Immigration Center on January 1, 1892. Then a huge fire at Ellis Island occurred during the night of June 14, 1897. The fire burned the entire immigration complex to the ground. Nobody was hurt, and nobody knows why it happened or who started it. However, many state and federal records were lost in that fire. Immigration processing was moved back to the old barge office in Manhattan while Ellis Island was being rebuilt. In December of 1900, the new Main Building on Ellis Island was opened, and 2,251 immigrants were received that day. In a single day in 1907, 11,747 immigrants were processed at Ellis Island. I am sure many subscribers already know this. The Family History Library in Salt Lake City has a good many films of church registers and also of civil registration [births, deaths, etc.] of cities and towns in Mexico. Do a PLACE search on the Family History Library Catalog which is online at _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) By the way, those searching for Germans [in Germany] who formerly lived in the part of Prussia which now belongs to Poland will more than likely find films pertaining to those places under the heading of Poland. That is where I located some records of some of my Schoen [now Shane] family members--in Poland. I knew the name of the town/village from an Army pension record filed by the father and his second wife. E.W.Wallace
