    3. Another source for this same information, but much more time-consuming to extract, is the search engine for the USGenWeb at the following page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/newsearch.htm If you know the county of birth, you can narrow your search by searching the county data through the following site: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tx/ I have used this USGenWeb search page extensively with my CARLOCK research. By the way, when I searched for the surname CARLOCK on the Texas Births Database 264 names did come up. Theoretically, though, I have already previously extracted all of this same information from the above-mentioned USGenWeb site. When I search by the surname TILLEMAN, my daughter, ex-husband, and his daughter by his second marriage do come up, everyone that I would expect to be listed there. My niece and two nephews also come up when I search by their surnames. Anna, I will contact you privately regarding one reason you might not be finding the information for which you are searching. I would also be willing to share this same information with anyone else who contacts me privately inquiring about the same subject. 1. Desmuke
    2. I am told that Dr. Andrew Wilson Desmuke or Dr. A. W. Desmuke who is found in the 1860 census in Bexar County did the first appendectomy in the Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio. I was also told recently that his picture is in the lobby of the hospital. Can anyone verify this information and give me a source? He is also supposed to have started a drugstore or pharmacy in San Antonia with a Dr. Herff. How can I verify this? Judy Burdick

Page 170 of the book "San Antonio Uncovered," by Mark Louis RYBCZYK, 1992, lists the following: "The Vance House This colonial mansion was built by James Vance in 1859 on 210 East Nueva. Nance [sic], from Stebaune, Ireland, built the home for his bride. The home was one of San Antonio's finest, built with lumber and wrought iron brought from New Orleans. Running water was a feature of this stately home; a water tank affixed to the roof made this one of the first buildings to offer such a luxury. The mansion was host to many dignitaries, including Robert E. Lee. In the 1930s the Vance House was chosen by the Department of the Interior's Historic Building Survey as an outstanding architectural example. The Vance House passed through various owners; at one time, it was home to Texas State Employment Service. The stately mansion was torn down in the early 1950s and was replaced with the new Federal Reserve Bank. A plaque now rests at the site of the home." Sue Tilleman ([email protected])
