John and Mira Cowen with 2 children, Birdie and Delia came to Bell County, Texas in 1885. They settled in a rock house on Nolan Creek, west of Belton, Texas. Later he purchased a place across the river from Tennessee valley. They remained there until about 1895. They sold the farm and moved to Old Howard, where he went into the blacksmith business. he followed this trade in Pendleton, Moffat and Heidenheimer until his retirement in 1920 when he purchased a place between Nolanville and Killeen near a school named Haybranch. After 1927 they made their home with their daughter and son-in-law, Charlie and Birdie Brown. Mira Cowen d. 22 September 1928 and John I. Cowen d. 01 Jul 1931. Buried in Tennessee Valley Cem. later re-interred in Resthaven Cemetery. south of Belton Texas. Graves are marked. The Cowens were parents of 10 children.
