    1. [TXBELL-L] Cemetery lookup

    3. There have been several discussions on this list about searching for cemeteries. I thought I would input as to how I find old cemeteries, as it works about 99% of the time. You can look up all the cemeteries in a particular county of the United States by going to the GNIS page at http://www-nmd.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html All you need to type in is your State, the county name and in feature type, put in cemetery. After you query a list of all cemeteries will come up showing latitude and longitude and the area they are in. (There are 54 cemeteries listed in Bell County). I write down the lat. & long. and open a mapping program on my computer. Go to the County you are looking in and most mapping programs wiil show lat. & long. at the bottom of the window as you move your mouse. Use your mouse to line up the lat & long. and you will have the cemetery pinpointed. I have found this to work on every cemetery I have ever looked for, except for one. You can then print out a map t! o take hunting with you, and if you follow the roads on the map you will be surprised just how accurate it is. Hope this helps. There probably are other ways ,too, but this seems to work well for me. If anyone does not have a mapping program on their computer and need a cemetery lookup, e-mail me personally and will try to get you one. Roger M. Pace Shamrock,Texas irishfan@pan-tex.net
