Surnames: Smalley, Hardin Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.texas.counties.bell/3547/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am a volunteer researcher for the Texas Peace Officers Memorial. In a well documented incident, outlaw John Wesley HARDIN was arrested in Longview for horse theft from Waco, McLennan County. State Police Lieutenant E. T. STAKES, Private Jim SMALLEY and a volunteer L. B. ANDERSON were transporting HARDIN to Waco. On 22 Jan 1871 (either in McLennan or Freestone Counties) STAKES and ANDERSON left to get food for the horses when HARDIN pulled a concealed pistol and killed SMALLEY. The 1870 census for Belton County reports a J. SMALLEY, 45, born about 1825 in Illinois. His wife was named Mary, 33, and they had three children, Andrew, 19, Clementine, 15, and John, 11. If this SMALLEY is the correct person, I am interested in any personal history, place of burial, date of birth, full name, etc.
