    3. With just a few variations IH-35 followed old Hwy 81. The highway ran through the centers of towns, so from Temple followed the Boulevard (Ave. H?) to the Old Waco Road to Belton, through Midway. It ran from the Waco Road west on 6th Avenue to Main Street in Belton, then straight out South Main toward Salado. My husband (who remembers such things better than I do) says the west access road on IH-35 is basically the old highway. I know the old bridge over the Lampasas River is now on the west access road. That means most of the additional land needed for the highway was taken from the east side. It took a huge bite from Sheriff John Bigham's land just across from the present Expo Center. When it got to Salado the highway turned and went though the center of town, past the old Stage Coach Inn. I have an old road map from about 1950, but it doesn't really show enough detail to help.
